I'm never really ever sure what to call it, but 983 is one of my favorite go-to spots in Bushwick. It's perfect for basically any meal of the day, particularly since they serve breakfast all the time. It's always packed for brunch on weekends, but this is one of the few places in Bushwick where I don't mind waiting.
Although their menu is certainly eclectic, everything I've had has been delicious. They also have a lot of healthy options, and I never walk away feeling bad about what I ate. In particular, their Vegan Scramble ($10, veggies, brown rice, tahini, and bread) is fantastic and very filling. The Dragon Bowl ($13, roasted veggies over rice with ginger carrot dressing and tahini) is also great, but it's a much smaller portion. I'm not even vegan, and yet I keep ordering these two all the time.
If you're not watching what you eat, their Mac n' Cheese (definitely add bacon) is some of the best I've had at a restaurant. The Quesadillas are also delicious yet not too heavy, and their Monster Burger truly is gigantic.
I'm only giving 4 stars, however, because 983 can be a bit inconsistent. I've had great meals where service is prompt, the food is hot, and everything is great, and others where portion sizes fluctuate wildly, the server disappears completely, food takes forever/is cold when it comes out, and burgers are severely overcooked.
Either way, I'll keep going back because it's still the best place for American comfort food in Bushwick.
I needed a place to have a beer, a burger, and then get some work done. Bushwick's Living Room seemed to fit the bill as per first Yelp impressions (which are rarely wrong).
Walked in, sat down at the bar, and was immediately greeted by Andy, the affable salt-of-the-earth bartender. I ordered a Bell's Two Hearted, then told Andy I was in the mood for a burger. He offered this gem:
"If you haven't had a burger here, you gotta get a burger. The burger ain't the best thing by any means, but…we sell more burgers than anything else. Get the burger."
With a smile and a nod, Andy whisked the menu away and went to put the order in. It was settled.
I kicked back, sipped my brew and waited waited for the burger to arrive while Andy recounted his latest journey to me and a fellow patron.
"I just got back from sailing aroun on this catamaran in the British Virgin Islands for two weeks. Man, it was beautiful. $2,000, but worth it. Had to get back for a manager's meeting, though." As he recalled the tale, I could tell some of that island state of mind had stuck around in his head; heck, maybe it had always been there. Either way, top-notch bartender, this Andy.
Food arrived–generous-looking patty with all the fresh necessities on top, shoestring fries and a pickle.
"You just let me know if you need anything," Andy assured me.
The burger was even tastier than it looked. Bun lightly toasted, meat extremely fresh, lettuce, tomato and onion crisp. I was extremely pleased with the decision Andy had made for me, and told him so.
After the beer and burger, I was feeling pretty sleepy, so I headed out instead of sticking around to do a little work. Andy and I exchanged a handshake, and I told him I'd be back soon. And I will! This may be my new afternoon hangout.
My entree was really good, I ordered the Roasted Chicken. I also ordered the Empanada for dessert. The only issue I had was that the apples inside the Empanada were cold when they were suppose to be warm – and I don't mean cold as in they started to cool down after the dish had been brought out. Half of the apples were actually ice cold.
One Bushwick's best brunch gems. What Bushwick Living Room lacks in size, it makes up for in service. The staff is attentive and the food is amazing!
My favorite dish is the Cured salmon Benedict which is topped with a sriracha hollandaise & crispy shallots. It's so delicious!
My mom had the chicken & waffle which was one of the specials. The waffle was cooked too hard but was flavorful. The chicken was pretty good.
Needless to say, Bushwick Livingroom will be a regular on my brunch list!
Went here over the weekend for an impromptu date night with my boo. we ordered ALOT of food. we got the fried green tomato capresé salad, which was a very interesting take on a capresé salad and was two thumbs up. The texture of the fried green tomatoes was just how I like it, mushy on the inside and crispy on the outside and the balsamic stuff on it was so good. then we had an order of onion rings, and they where the size of donuts! very good and crispy as well. I had a good old hamburger and added on a friend egg and avocado, it was so huge and delicious, the only thing I didn't like was the fact that the egg was over cooked, I wanted it to be a bit runny, but thats okay, it was still very very good. the fries it came with where okay.
I ordered the cookie with milk for dessert, and was disappointed. it was cooked in a cast iron skillet so I expected something melty and crispy and gooey, like a pizzokie, but I got something that was more like a muffin in the shape of a circle, so disappointed, the chocolate chips where really tiny and not even melted, not to mention it took them almost 20mins to make. our waitress was very nice and sweet, as where all the staff. The place was very small but where seated right away, it was packed but the location is a bit a ways away from the train so there wasn't 100 people waiting outside like every other restaurant near the trains. the only think I really didn't like about the place was the bathrooms and the some of the songs they where playing (N-word this, and N-word that, what lovely dinner banter, I get it, you're hipsters listening to hardcore rap ironically) but mostly the music was cool. The bathrooms looked like a dive bars bathrooms, stickers, grafitti, dirty paper towels thrown all over the place and virtually no lighting. not sure why the theme of the restaurant was this nice quaint living room but the bathrooms where so crappy (no pun intended). dispite those little issues I will come back here because the food and service was bangin'!
Came here for brunch on Sunday. Packed inside, but we got seated at the bar after a brief 20 minute wait. No problem there. Some outdoor benches. A friendly staffer to say hey and keep us updated on time.
Nice drink selection. $5 for a small mimosa, $10 for a large. Same with Bloody Mary's. Beer, wine, liquor, etc…
Reasonably priced entrees (most between $10 and $14). You'll still walk out of here spending $25 each for a drink and some eats, but that's the Bushwick way.
Quick service given that it was a Sunday brunch (maybe 10-15 minute ticket time).
Now, it wasn't extraordinary, but it was solid. The Vegan Scramble and Biscuits and Gravy were good portions and came out piping hot. Both were filling, which is saying something. Too many times I've left Bushwick brunch spots hungry.
I wouldn't necessarily send anyone out of their way to come here, but it's a nice neighborhood spot to explore.
Yay for the vegan scramble and amazing Bloody Mary's. Service was friendly and efficient.
I was next door at Catland for a Conjure conference and grabbed a quick bite in between speakers. I fortunately found seating at the bar, as the place was otherwise packed to the rafters on a Saturday.
I was out of town visiting this area and found them on yelp. They had good reviews so I decided to give them a try. The inside is a little small so not good for a large group. Both times I went we were able to be seated right away. The service was quick and very friendly. For my first visit I got the Cuban sandwich. For my second visit I got the breakfast sandwich.
The Cuban was pretty good. A good amount of meat and cheese but I would have like more dill pickles and spicy mustard on it. The fries that came with it were pretty good as well. The breakfast sandwich was good as well. A lot of eggs on the sandwich. It would have been nice to have more bacon on it than the two slices that were already on it but over all a good sandwich. It came with home fries which were pretty tasty. Over all a good place with good food!
