I have been coming here for their clay pot rice for a while. They have gotten worse and worse. There's less ingredients and the taste is just bland. I have pretty much ordered everything from frog legs to their meat patties. My favorite is their chicken and mushroom clay pot rice.
came here for the rice casserole. we ordered one chicken and black mushroom with extra sausage for two people (girls). it took a little while for the rice to come out which is a-okay with me. i know they're making my rice casserole extra goood. when it did come out, it was still sizzling hot! the rice was sticky rice – which came as a slight surprise to me. i thought it was regular… rice? but the sticky rice was a lot better, it soaked in a lot of the flavor of the chicken/mushroom/sausage.
the chicken was so tender and soft and i'm usually not a big fan of chicken. the mushroom was great. and chinese sausage – always good.
when we got to the end, we hit the gold mine. scraping off the sides and bottom and hearing it crunch and crackle made my day. it was a little burnt, which is exactly what i wanted.
best. rice. casserole. ever!
it was $11.50 total for one order, tax and tip = $15 to feed two girls ^_^ muy bien.
Passed by this place before heading out to Time Square for show and decided on the way back we will stop and get some dinner. I called them and they said they closed at 10 pm on saturday evening and it was around 9 pm prior getting into the subway when I called. I got to the restaurant at 9:40 pm and he told me sorry we are closed. I'm like hello I called you guys you said closed at 10 pm, he was like we cleaned up the kitchen already. WTH??? I know I should of place an order to pick up, but these people barely spoke english so who knows what I would have gotten with a phone order. The food looked very cheap that is why we would loved to have order here, but if you are expecting customer service, forget about it. Dont expect to get food her after 9:30 pm even if they say they are open. Very disappointing! Good thing on our way back home we were able to find some place open and was able to get grub, and even though they barely spoke english, they were super nice and we were able to order food.
Everything we ordered was some of the best, authentic Chinese food ever! The clay pot bowl hit the spot, and the soy sauce put it over the top!
Good choice if you want some cheap and fast chinatown food!
There aren't a lot of claypot rice places in NYC, so I was so happy when this opened a few years ago. The key to these claypot rices is the crispy rice that forms on the bottom (kind of like socarrat in a paella). My favorite is their House Special with Chinese Sauce and Mince Pork Rice Casserole – this one basically has a little bit of everything including really yummy sweet chinese sausage. The rice is jasmine rice, which I kind of hate, but if it's crispy enough on the bottom, I'm all good. When you take it to go, they give you their special sauce in a little container – remember to drizzle this all over the rice before you dig in!
The other night, I tried the Minced Sausage with Taro Sticky Rice Casserole, and man, this sticky rice is 100000x better than the regular!!! Rice stays moist, and taro is amazingly fluffy.
*Tip: If you get take-out, they used to give it to you in the actual claypot and kindly ask that you return it (though most people tend to keep them and they don't do anything about it). They now don't give them to you anymore, and empty the rice into a plastic take-out container!!! Not as good, but if cooked long enough, you'll still retain some crispyness!
Ooooh. Clay pot rice! We came here for dinner on a Saturday night. Our server was really nice. The prices are jaw-droppingly low (I don't come to Chinatown often so that's always a pleasant surprise, given that food in the rest of Manhattan tends to cost literally twice as much).
We got Chinese broccoli and the little Peking duck buns to share, and then we all got different clay pots. Mine was the perfect size after a day of biking on Governors Island – I didn't eat all the rice but I did eat all the chicken and mushroom + salted egg that I requested. Everyone else took about half of theirs home but I think it keeps well so hey – at $10 a pop you could do much worse.
The Chinese broccoli was good – a bit oily and a little bitter, but I think that's just how it tastes. It did taste fresh which was the important thing. The Peking duck itself in the buns was not super impressive, but the buns were nice and fluffy and at a price of $2.95 for 3 buns, no complaints here.
The bathroom was a bit cringe-worthily gross. Hey – ya get what ya pay for.
I'd come back if invited, but not necessarily on my own.
Came for the clay pot rice and some fried buns (man tou). Clay pot rice was alright. The fried man tous were disappointing. I expected that crispy exterior layer but that texture was missing. It was soft on the outside and very very dry in the interior. It was almost to hard too eat.
This is what I think of when I think of old NY Chinatown.
We came here after I read about clay pot rice in grubstreet or one of those online blogs. it is pretty tasty stuff. It's kinda like a Chinese version of a hot stone bibimbap except the bottom of the rice wasn't as burnt since the pot the chinese use is glazed and not as sticky.
I also tried the thousand year old egg for the first time ever and it was pretty good. I was expecting something really horrible and disgusting, but I was pleasantly surprised.
