I ordered Abigail's on whim from Seamless – and it was a pleasant surprise! The reviews on Yelp were all positive, but I had never ordered from this bakery before so didn't know what to expect I got the funfetti jar cake and the chocolate chunk cookie sandwich. Both had an extremely sweet and satisfying vanilla buttercream, with rainbow sprinkles – my favorite. The chocolate chunk cookie was crisp on the edges and delightful soft in the center. It was addicting! The jar cake was super cute and yummy, though at $7 for 4 ounces, it was pretty expensive. It would be more bang for your buck to get more cookies. They were bigger than my hand and amazing! Don't get me wrong – the cake was thoroughly enjoyable, but at the cost of two cupcakes and 1/2 the size of one, I'd save the money and try a dessert bar next time. Really cutely designed packaging and a really sweet brand. I'll definitely order again! And being that they deliver through Seamless, it could become a dangerous habit! Update: ordered again via seamless and got two of the chocolate chunk sandwiches – one of them had an amazing cookie to foraging ratio. Had to update – makes my heart so happy!
Abby Lavin, the woman behind the delicious cake jars from Jam Jar Bakery, which were previously only available online and in a few retail locations, has opened her own brick and mortar selling those same jars along with several other delicious pastries and other creations.
The jars are front and center in the display case, but on either side, there are tons of other great options. To the left are a variety of cookies, including some great mini black & whites, and a selection of brownies and bars, which are massive. We tried the enormous Cheesecake Brownie ($4), which was super thick and rich. To the right are cupcakes and whole cakes, which you can sample by the slice. We tried the special 4th of July Chocolate Cake (an absolute bargain at $4 for a sizable slice), which was definitely up there with the best chocolate cakes in NYC.
In addition to all of these great things she bakes onsite, she also sells the great drinks from Renegade Lemonade and the marshmallows from Squish Marsh, which you probably saw all over Instagram last summer on the Ice & Vice cones at Madison Square Eats.
This bright, beautiful shop is definitely worth the trip over to Crown Heights for some exceptionally good sweets.
Baked goods and I are pretty much best friends. So, when Abigail's Bakeshop, a new American Bakery, opened up in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, I had to check it out. On a block where things all pretty much look the same, this bright, adorably retro shop stands out, calling you to take a step inside. Did you take a step inside? Good, you made the right decision.
Now a brick and mortar home for Jam Jar Bakery, the original company of deliciously precious jars and cakes baked in the jars, you can find all of the jars there for purchase, along with a variety of freshly baked goods, and other treats from local vendors. It's extremely difficult to just walk away with one thing, so, of course I got a number of goods to try out.
Let's talk about this Pecan Bar. Dear lord, thank you. It's the size of a baby's head (ok, not the most pleasant comparison, especially when you're about to eat it, but, you know, for scale), but I still could have eaten a couple in one sitting. It's buttery, a little flakey, and gooey all at the same time.
A signature item here is also the Pink Velvet, which comes in a cake-by-the-slice (or full cake) version, as well as full sized and mini cupcakes. Even if cupcakes aren't your thing, this one is so delightful to even look at, that it's hard not to be happy eating it too.
Who doesn't love cheesecake? Do they exist? If you're lactose-intolerant, I'll give you a pass. These little guys are so cute and equally delicious. The cheesecake itself is rich and creamy, but still light and velvety. Then, the graham cracker crust compliments it perfectly, adding a bit more of that buttery quality, and sweetness. Zero complaints here.
And then, back to the jar pies. I got the Gimme S'More, a seasonal pie right now, in collaboration with Squish Marshmallows. It's insanely delicious, and makes you want to retire those ridiculous camp fire store-bought s'mores forever. Just hand me a spoon and I'm good to go with this one.
