Above Restaurant and Bar
“I had the brioche french toast with a side of sausage and mushroom bisque (hey it's brunch right?)”
“I had the chilean sea bass, my fiancée had the lobster ravioli and our friend had the scallops.”
“We especially loved coming here during the fall / spring because you could sit on the outside terrace instead of at the bar or in the dining room (which is more formal).”

Spoke with the management and they were very apologetic and I was there on collage night. They talked to me invited me back in and bought me a couple drinks the following week. Great spot in South Orange highly recommend for food and craft beer and good drinks. Also has an attentive staff and a caring management.
Above is a solid place to grab a bite or drinks. If you're looking to sit outdoors, or at a full service bar, this is a good option, as both are huge. And so is the menu. They serve, like, everything; from pizza to sushi to sandwiches and pastas — there is really so much to choose from…usually. And while I find the food good, unfortunately, they are always out of a lot of things (at least when I come!). One time, we ordered like four items from the menu and were told they were out of all of them, including pizza, which is an entire section on its menu! Another time, on their "Wine Wednesday," they were out of three white wines we ordered and the one we did get was spoiled.
That being said, I do enjoy brunch here, which is very good and reasonably priced. Their bloody marys are also worth a try. While unimpressed by their spinach and artichoke dip, I do like the fish tacos, mussels, chicken and mozzarella sandwich, cheesesteak, and fried mozzerella.
The service here is pretty good. Servers have always been attentive and honest about their thoughts on certain menu items. I also like that they appreciate some of the issues the restaurants has, like lacking food and drink items and laugh along with you. In the end though, this is a good place to grab a drink or bite in town with good service and a nice outdoor space. They also accept OpenTable reservations.
HINT: There's a free parking garage for Above (and attached market) off Vose St. right behind the restaurant. A god-send on busy nights and afternoons.
The food was excellent and the service was good but they were missing a lot of the seafood options n the menu. My boss ordered the seafood tower which is the most expensive item on the menu and they didn't have any lobster, lump crab, or clams for it. They got an order of oysters and two orders of shrimp cocktail instead. I was really surprised because this restaurant is connected to a high end grocery store that when walking into the restaurant is packed with fresh seafood.
I was not a fan of the duck wings. I tried them a few different ways because several people at the table ordered them. The spicy way did not work for me and neither did the sweet way. The fried calamari is good
I believe this restaurants has all the makings to have 4 stars but the food can be hit or miss which, for me, can become a devastating experience lolol (but forreal). This last visit was amazing!
To start, when you enter the place is beautiful. There is dining room, a lounge (has a laid back bar feel, tvs included), and an area to eat outdoors. The hostesses are always extremely warm and welcoming. Same goes for the servers.
Our food took a long time to come out but when it did it was scrum-didily-umptious! There were moans and "you gotta try this!" I ordered the fish tacos and my friend ordered the crab cake app with fries. The food was beautifully plated and hot. I inquired as to if the fish was fried or grilled before i ordered. Although it was usually deep fried, my server let me know that she can just have them grill the fish which I thought was very nice.
My friend shared dessert- we got the chocolate lava cake and after our delicious dinner we were so disappointedThe cake tasted over done ( a little hard and slightly burned). It did not ruin the meal by any means but we were a little disappointed.
If I am in the area and I want to meet up with someone at a decent place I would not scratch Above off the list but, I am staying open as to my go to spot when in South Orange.
Went to the movies in South Orange and wanted to grab a bite afterwards. Choices were quite limited, not because of a lack of restaurants in the area but because it was freezing. Walked up the stairs into what was a very visually appealing restaurant. Walked passed the tables and into the bar area, took a seat and ordered drinks and a couple of appetizers.
Service was polite and prompt and the Mets game was on so I couldn't have been happier. My Bloody Mary was delicious; just the right balance of sweet and tart, with small bits of horse radish floating around and olives perched precariously on top.
Ordered the fried chicken meat balls and a sushi roll who's name eludes me. I'm a total sucker for anything buffalo and the meat balls were no exception. Absolutely delicious, a novel take on the quintessential wings that I would absolutely order again. Sushi was fresh and delicious.
The restaurant itself was also quite nice, with various rooms of tables, a sushi counter and a bar area. All were well staffed and visually appealing. Being a creature of habit, next time I'm in South Orange I will absolutely hit them up again. Really nice place with a twist on the ordinary. Very nice.
My work throw their holiday party here which is alright. They serve finger food which tastes delicious but the waiters don't come out often enough with the food.
I came here once for dinner and had the salmon burger which was good. However, this restaurant can be pricey. Portion sizes are good.
Went here for a dinner with my job and the one thing I like is its spacious with a nice view of the town on both the second and 3rd floors. Plenty of walking room and seating per table. The food is good – the chicken marsala, pasta, fish, salad is all delicious and hot. The potato strips and string beans aren't bad either. The servers are all nice and treated us well. The balcony on the second level is nice too so you can enjoy dining outside on nice days but the train is kind of a distraction. Its a bit pricey from what i know though I didn't have to pay so that could be something to take note of especially when comapring it to the entire menu. Parking could be an issue here, there is a parking lot but it fills up quick and is shared with the town, more specifically the supermarket below thos resturant – Ashleys. The experience was good and fits with the various other eateries in the area.
Met a friend here for drinks and snacks. Sat at the bar for awhile by myself while waiting for her. It was early happy hour on a weekday and people were just beginning to trickle in, a few diners, a few folks grabbing dinner at the bar–nice upscale relaxed scene with a view of the sushi bar right there in the dining room.
The weather was nice and my friend and I sat on the patio, which has a view over downtown South Orange. Watch the NJ Transit trains coming and going through the statin below and be glad you're sitting there having a drink instead 🙂 I had the tasty salmon avocado tartar tower–a little pricy but not surprising for a fancy spot in SO. I will go back to try more stuff bc upscale New American cuisine is a different type of cuisine for the area.
