  1. They have the best sweet potato pie I've ever had besides my grandma's.   It sucked once my grandmother started becoming senile and wasn't allowed near the stove anymore. One of the things I missed the most was her pies because store bought just doesn't taste the same. Last week I was craving sweet potato pie so I stopped at a bakery and bought one but it wasn't that great. The day after I gave Abu's a try  and the pie actually did taste homemade –not too sweet, great texture and the perfect amount of nutmeg. Abu's pie was gone in a day and 3/4 of the other pie is still in my fridge but I can't bring myself to eat it. Out of curiosity I also tried the bean pie at Abu's, which was excellent. It was the first time I ever had it but it definitely won't be the last. I always used to wonder why people would buy bean pies from those Nation of Islam guys with bow ties on the street, but now I know why.  I shared some with my brother and now he's pestering me to go back to Abu's to buy him a bean pie.

  2. It's nice to see Abou's friendly face in the morning; he will always greet you with a smile…

I come here for my weekly fix of banana pudding and bread pudding. They are both REALLY delicious. I also tried some of the pies, like the bean pie or the sweet potato pie, also very good.

My only bad experience with Abou's has been a banana pudding that tasted somewhat funky (it had started fermenting or something).

Don't come here before 11 AM, you won't find much.

  3. I love this place!  The butter cream (and red velvet) cupcakes are delicious and a reasonable $1.50.  The lemon cake is equally delicious with its butter cream frosting, lemon flavor and all around goodness.

  4. I've lived near Abu's for approximately 2 years and have been avoiding it like the plague. I've heard on occasion how good they were and I really didn't need to know that such delicious treats were readily available. However last night I finally gave in to temptation and I was not disappointed. I ordered a slice of their carrot cake. At first I was a little skeptical of it's freshness due to the overcrowded display window. I am happy to report the cake was very moist. It was a little spicier than I like my carrot cakes to be, but I ate the whole thing so I can't really complain too much. To the detriment of my diet, I will be back!

  5. Overall, a mixed experience. Our red velvet cake had two clearly burnt layers – a first for me at a commercial bakery.  They should have been tossed if someone forgot about them and left them too long. And they weren't just a little burnt – they were really blackened and charred tasting. Too bad, because the cake otherwise could have been very nice.

The sweet potato pie was very tasty, but the crust should have been pre-baked.  That would have gotten rid of the raw, uncooked pie crust flavor, particularly when the crust is clearly not made with butter.  Gotta pre-cook!  The filling, though, was really delicious, which is the main reason I'm giving this place 3 instead of 2 stars.

Would I try it again?  Yes, I probably would as we're often in this neighborhood. However, in the future, I will be sure to check if the cake is burnt before walking out the door!

  6. Really good desserts. The bread pudding is fabulous, and the banana pudding is heavenly 🙂 Have yet to try the cupcakes, but thats my next mission 🙂
