Achar is a new family run Indian restaurant that just opened on 1st avenue a week or two ago. I've walked past it multiple times and never seen a crowd, but nonetheless decided to give it a try the other night.
In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, a few friends and I stopped by and it was packed! This must have taken them by surprise because the service and food were painfully slow. The owners even had their kids helping bus the tables to speed things up.
Food was great, reminded me a lot of my mom's home cooked recipes – not at all greasy and not too much salt. Served in classic stainless steel containers added to the homely feel.
Meh ! I really wanted to like this place, but it was really a mess…The Place has great looking interior very modern yet cultural…family owned as well..but the food was just all over the place…we had the achari kebab platter for appetizer (The Kebabs were soaked in some sort of light gravy. huh?) For entrees, we got the saag with Mushroom (Mushroom felt hard and just not gelling with the spinach which was still watery)..The Chicken Vindaloo was spicy but just an overload of chilli and a lack or pepper and salt..The Naan was good…I really hope they fix their dishes here and focus on the seasoning…I would hate to see them go out of business 🙁

Favorites: Bindi bhajee, veg biriyani, tarka daal and veg dhansak curry.
Sure there were some hiccups, and Achar has some kinks to fix, but I have a feeling they will work these things out over time. Give it a try!
