ye olde Atlantic & Pacific,
how far you fall short of Whole Food's/Trader Joe's quality. But your weekly circulars that you mail me without fail plus your deep discounts/sales, just pull me back in (Pacino reference).
thou deserved only two stars but your large underground parking garage grants you one extra. Parking underground for food shopping reminds me of shopping at baekhajums (ie, mega-department stores in Seoul). Nostalgia and de ja vu- sigh.
(I have no idea why I'm using Old English- I've got to stop reading Ken Follett)
Compared to ShopRite in Hoboken, A&P is a ghost town. Any day, any time…I don't think i've ever seen more than a handful of people in here at the same time. One time I saw a person and we almost felt compelled to talk to each other, out of fear we might be the only two people in the store and all subsequent encounters would be exponentially more awkward. One can only "nod" and "polite smile" so many times before actual communication becomes necessary.
That said, I like that I can walk down an aisle and not bump into 12 other people, not have to step around someone trying to decide between 8 different kinds of pasta sauces, not have to high jump over someone evaluating the fat difference between two bags of chips, and not have to shimmy myself between a row of triple parked carts all vying for the best package of chicken.
The good: -The club card can save you a lot if you pay attention to price tags -The meat selection is pretty okay; organic chicken has had a few mega sales since I started coming here. -Garage parking is nice, but can be limited. -The deli has Cooper cheese. NOBODY has Cooper cheese! -There is a secret checkout on the way out to the garage, but since there aren't really ever any people here…I suppose you can check out at either end of the store.
The meh: -Pricing is all over the place. Good deals on produce (sometimes) and horrible deals on feta cheese, frozen fruit, and Stacey's pita chips. -Brands are missing. You'll notice when you walk around. I'm sure it's due to size constraints of the store itself, but not having Lidia's sauce is kind of a downer.
The what?! -The deli closes stupidly early. Like, hours before the store closes. I tried to get some roast beef at 7:10pm last week…no luck. -Meat and seafood also close up shop pretty early, but at least they have packaged items to choose from.
Come here for the essentials and the "gotta get one thing for this meal" type stuff. Know you might save money, you will have minimal company, and you probably won't find everything.
Really small overly expensive supermarket in the middle of a ultra high end/ultra low end part of town…the problem here is they do not have the selection or pricing structure of a Stop N Shop or Shop Rite…..and there is nothing in the immediate proximity to fill this need…..and as such people are stuck paying ridiculous A&P prices or going to crappy local markets….this area desperately needs a Stop N Shop!!!!!

Groceries on the Hudson, stop #1.

My trip here was a standard grocery shopping experience. There's food and stuff; you buy it.
This location is convenient as its directly connected to a parking garage. However my friends did complain about the cheese selection.
If you need groceries and this is closest to you, use it. Its that simple.
