Very good food at this fairly small but cozy Afghan/ Middle Eastern place. The stews are full of flavor and go perfect with the wonderful brown basmati rice. Kebobs are always tender and full of great spice. Service is friendly and prices are very reasonable as well. Only gripe is finding a place to park.
My husband and I wanted to try a new restaurant where I could have something dietetic, so we decided to come here. We were so happy we did because everything was delicious.
We started out with the Kashk-e-Badnjon
Seasoned cooked eggplant topped with yogurt sauce. $5.95
and the Bolanee
Turnovers stuffed with potatoes, scallions, and seasonings. $5.95
We were going to share the combination dinner but the waiter convinced us that if we weren't planning on eating 3 skewers of meat, we could save money by getting
Kabob Sultani$16.95 chicken and beef skewer over basmanti rice with a salad.
It was cooked perfectly. They were both very flavorful and seasoned perfectly. They were juicy and delicious. My only complaint was that I would have preferred some sort of veggy with the skewer instead of all the rice, but I know for next time.
My husband got his cardamom tea and was excited when they put a ton of sugar cubes on the table to accompany the tea.
The bill came out to about $34.00 We were super full and the meal was yummy. We will definitely be back.
This place is great. I always have the chicken shish kebab with basmati rice. They serve a salad with a great dressing. The service is great. The best concept is the BYOB.
This was my first experience eating Afghan food and unfortunately, I was very underwhelmed with Afghan Grill Kabob House. I drive by this spot on Hillside Avenue from time to time and given the positive Yelp reviews, had been meaning to try it for some time now.
We ordered take out midday on a rainy, chilly Saturday:
– Kashk-e-Badnjon (eggplant) – I rarely enjoy eating eggplant but this was prepared really well. The best thing we ordered. The pita bread that came with our meal was very thin, dry and flavorless. Is that how it's supposed to be? Nevertheless, it was perfect for eating with the eggplant as it didn't overpower the already tasty appetizer.
– Dolma (stuffed grape leaves) – These were huge! Much bigger than normal, they ended up being okay.
– Kabob kobideh and lamb shish kabob – Meh. These two entrees were also both just okay. Meat was a bit dry and difficult to bite into. But still somewhat flavorful. I was expecting something more. Also, meat to rice ratio was disappointing. We were given way too much rice which I think cheapens the dish.
-The yogurt sauce was what saved the meal.
I ate with my Russian friend who is much more familiar with this type of cuisine. He was not impressed at all and explained that this establishment would never survive in Brooklyn or other areas where the food is more popular.
It's really a shame because the woman working there was so pleasant and the decor was very pretty, clean, and welcoming. I picked up on almost a summery-California theme. The restaurant was empty but that may have been due to the current weather conditions and time of day.
It certainly wasn't bad… but next time, I would prefer to go to an area with a heavier Afghan/Middle Eastern/Russian population for a more authentic and flavorful version of this meal.
This place is a neighborhood gem. I've been ordering food from Afghan Grill for almost 7-8 years now and the quality and consistency has never changed. This restaurant is also very nice for dining in. The hosts are very cordial and inviting. The dining rooms have dual functions: the front, romantic dinners and the back room for larger dining groups. I recommend the sambosa for appetizer (hint: try it with the white sauce and hot sauce), their homemade chicken soup, and either the lamb chops or chicken kebab with Qabali palau.
On a rainy Saturday night, Bonnie G. and I trekked to NHP to try Afghan Grill to see how it compared to the Hicksville venues of the same ethnic food. It is situated between a Vegan Indian and Southern Spice restaurants and the parking is tight and if you dont park on Hillside Ave the trek is too far. Anywho, getting back to the restaurant. Its very quaint with nice music playing in background an is clean and cheery! Theres several tables in the front and a larger dining room in the rear…where we chose to sit. The servers are on top of things and took care of our every need.
For appy's we had Hummus and an Afghan version of a Kreplach with a nice sauce on it. BTW, on the table they give you some warm pita which is like eating paper…no real taste and thin…does not add or compliment the meal. They do have Naan but you have to order seperatly.
Now the mains….Bonnie G. had the Lamb Shish Kebob ordered MR with a wonderful rice with carrots and raisins…kind of sweet and went well with the Lamb. We were disappointed that no Grilled Peppers or Tomatoes of any note came with the dish. I had Lamb Shank which came buried under the rice but was really good once I found it. We enjoyed our meal and might return if in the area but would not make it a destination for a drive from Syosset as we could really have the food in Hicksville which is as good if not better!
Found this place on Yelp and drove here one day for lunch. I was very hesitant looking at the place. But I walked in and felt even more hesitant. It was very quiet and we were the only ones inside. But still, I wanted to try this place out. We were seated in the dining area, and I felt like I was in somebody's living room.
Our server came out with pita for the table and some sauces. We ordered two teas and our meals. I felt a bit weird because we were the only ones there with music in the background sitting in complete silence as we watched a guy work on the wall a couple feet away from us. I mean I didn't mind really, it was just a bit weird lol.
Our server brought out salads that came with our meal and a yogurt dressing. It was very delicious and it made me want to put yogurt on all my salads now lol.
My Persian friend insisted I try the jujeh which is a Cornish hen that came with basmati rice and I'm very happy I did. It was very well cooked, perfectly seasoned and was absolutely delicious.
We paid our bill and left full with leftovers, extremely satisfied and very delighted. The guy fixing the wall (probably the owner) was such a sweet and welcoming guy that he makes me want to come back again and I wouldn't care if he started drilling the wall next, he was wonderful and so was the food.
I highly recommend this place. Great prices, wonderful service and delicious food.
Stopped by Afghan Grill since the Indian restaurant on the same black was closed today. Had a surprisingly good meal of tender, juicy and flavorful chicken and beef kebabs with fluffy jasmine rice, accompanied by salad with zesty yogurt sauce. We started with samosas, which were small but tasty. I didn't try the hot sauce, but the cilantro and yogurt sauces were both good. The only thing I didn't enjoy was the pita bread, which was thin and very dry. The service was excellent, fast and friendly. We will definitely be back.
