Our waiter was FANTASTIC! I would return a ton of times just for service like that. I ate there with my daughter, boyfriend, and cousin. Very small location with closer tables to make a homely environment. We ordered a three spread order to eat our pita with for an appetizer. That was very yummy. For some odd reason I liked mixing it. Also, ordered some shrimp with feta and garlic sauce. They were very big and tasted quite good. The meatballs were my favorite. They came with yogurt in the middle. Tasted the rice and cabbage salad that came with garlic and lime too. All was very yummy. Our last addition to our menu was one of their wines. I typically only drink read wine but gave it this time. It was very yummy.
Oh oh oh. I forgot. We got a dessert on the house too. I would've tried it but the girls fell in love and ate it all in a blast. It was some kind of chocolate cake. They loved it.
This review is based on two things: a carafe of wine and grill octopus.
Stopped by this place for a snack. Yes, my snack was wine and octopus. Perfect pairing. Why? Because the octopus tasted like chicken. Wasn't chewy or weird. Just perfection.
If you're ever in Astoria and wanting Greek food, hit up this place.
Forgot to review this place. A nice, small, cozy spot for a Sunday dinner in the winter. Service was very fast and very friendly.
Chicken lemon soup – large bowl for $5 had great texture and a-ok flavor. I prefer it when it has more lemon flavor and it hardly had a hint of lemon.
Stuffed grilled calamari – $10.00. Pretty small portion and the calamari was too chewy and not very flavorful, but the feta tomato stuffing was very tasty.
Salmon with dill and tomato sauce was good though not great. The spinach rice side was pretty delicious.
We didn't care for moussaka dish– I tried it and it has a flavor of nutmeg. HIs dad though liked his lamb chops and the fries were quite tasty.
Complimentary dessert – two of the items were super sweet with honey, but one was less sweet and very good.
They don't seem to salt food here and nothing was too greasy, so that was great!
R.I.P. Agnanti – Bay Rige, but I'll sleep better knowing that the original is still safe and sound. My buddy lives in Astoria and suggested a visit to this outpost, which was an easy sell for a Hellenophile such as myself.
We showed up around 6:30 on a Saturday, and the sidewalk was already clogged with eager diners. We were quoted a wait time of about 20 minutes, and while it was longer than my stomach would have preferred, the prediction was about right.
Agnanti is old school Greek, and while Astoria is crawling with amazing options, the food still makes this grand-pappy a worthy contender. We went with a few meze, including the excellent clamari STUFFED (yes) with tomato, feta cheese, and basil, the to-die-for grilled octopus, and the surprisingly small (for a Greek taverna) Greek salad.
For my main I had the off-menu jumbo shrimp in garlic sauce which was pretty tasty. (Ask them about specials and other off-menu items, but they have really awesome regular items too, such as swordfish kebab and the signature rooster pasta.)
If you love Greek food, and meze, put this one on your list.
Meh, I've had better Greek food in Fresh Meadows, Queens, NY. The recommended place is Gyro World.
Anyways, Agnanti's ambience is clean and neat. It is good to have conversations and friends to hang out. It offers indoors and outdoors.
BUT, the food is trully meh. The taste is ok. Nothing wow. I had Octopus and it tasted so so. I had pork chop and I believe I can cook it better than how they do it. If you are in hurry, do not have the time to cook, feel lazy, and live around here in Astoria then you may come to this place. Other than that it is not worth driving all the way here when you can get better Greek food from anywhere else (Gyro World, perhaps?!)
An authentic Greek restaurant serving the kind of food an old Greek grandma would make. The shrimp with tomato and feta is outrageous, bursting with flavor. I loved the grilled octopus, although it is a bit pricey. The dips with pita is a great sharing item for the table. I love the ambiance of this restaurant; it is located on a beautiful a stone's throw from the river right next to Astoria Park. Great for a date or an intimate dinner with someone special or family. I look forward to going back soon!
I went here with a Groupon that included $50 of food and drink for two people. Service was prompt and we sat outside, which is my favorite thing of all time to do. We ordered a few things, and they served us dessert on the house (halva – their only dessert option), which is cool of them to do.
Stuffed Calamari – two pieces filled with tomato, feta, and basil. I ordered this because I'd never had stuffed calamari and it sounded interesting. I liked it, but it's hard to eat, because as soon as you bite into it, the stuffing pops out, so you end up eating the filling and the calamari separately.
Grilled Salmon entree – served with lemon and oil, or tomatoes, onions, feta, and dill. I asked to get all of it, and I really enjoyed it! What was great was that I ended up taking half of it to go for dinner. Love when that happens.
My friend got a veggie soup, which was one of the specials of the day, and the Midia Krasata, mussels in wine sauce. She said the soup was bland, but I think she enjoyed the mussels.
Overall, I wouldn't say to make the trek out here for Agnanti, but if you're around the corner, sure, hit it up. But make sure to get the Groupon deal first!
Right across from Astoria Park, this quaint Greek restaurant is a decent option in the neighborhood.
There were a nice selection of wines to choose from but we opted for a carafe of their house white. It came in a cute copper container.
The menu is great to choose a few options for sharing and trying different dishes. The Dolmades Yialantzi were the stuffed grape leaves. The rice herb stuffing was really good and you also got a huge dollop of creamed goat cheese in the middle.
We also got the Shrimp Kataifi which are whole shrimp wrapped in a shredded pastry, and fried. They are then placed on this lemony mustard sauce. This was a very interesting dish that I had to get when I saw it on the menu. It was really good and did not disappoint.
The Baccalo were fried cod balls with a thick garlic pine-nut sauce. It was very mild and needed a lot of the sauce for each bite. Some pieces were kind of hard and over fried.
The Tigania is described as "sauteed strips of your choice of pork or chicken with potatoes, lemon and spices." We chose chicken and what it actually is strips of chicken sauteed with french fries. The sauteing made the whole dish very soggy and oily. The herbed chicken had good flavor but was quite dry and stringy as well.
We finished with a complementary dessert of corn cake, more of the creamed goat cheese, and strawberry preserves.
While I would want to come back and try other dishes, it seems like the menu is a hit or miss. Also to note that they take credit cards but tip must be in cash.
