Came in around 5 for early dinner and it was so DEAD. No one there and it was so silent, I wanted to leave pretty bad. Not the best place to bring people. I recommend getting stuff to go if you really want food from Agave.
Firstly, carnitas made out of pork belly? Big no-no for me. I love pork belly as much as anyone else but if its all fat, I tend to not dig it. Chips and salsa were pretty good and a few of their tacos were decent but they're not dressed up like I usually like them. It was just meat, the salsas they give you on the side, and a wee bit of cilantro and lime. Since their tacos aren't dressed with any fixin's, the portions should be a little bigger. Just my opinion. On the plus side, if you order 4 tacos, you can get 2 of one kind and 2 of another. You're not stuck with the same monotonous one.
Parking is limited. It depends when you are in the area. They do take card though. Very casual and lunch-type place. Nothing fancy.
I am not exaggerating when I say this… This is my all time FAVEEE mexican place. I tried Taqueria Downtown in JC the other day and their 500+ reviews do not compare to the quality of food here. No lie.
My review is solely based on the food & service over the phone. I've never had a problem placing a delivery order, as everyone is extremely nice & more than happy to answer any questions you have. Delivery is also never late; usually 30 mins or less!
GET THE TACOS. It doesn't even matter which ones you get bc they are all like crack. My personal faves are the tacos al postor (pork w/ pineapple chunks) & the carne enchilada. Totally drooling as I'm writing this. The enchiladas in the green sauce are awesome also. Best green sauce I've ever had. I've tried it with the red sauce but that was a bit too strong for my taste. Rice and beans are tasty enough, no complaints.
The homemade chips & guac are a treat as well. The guac is slightly inconsistent though. Most days its perfect and other days, there's just way too much onions cilantro & lime. Don't forget to smother all of these badboys in their red and green sauces. You can literally taste the freshness of all the ingredients and I would buy this in bulk if I could… I prefer green over the red.
What more can I say? Get the damn tacos and do not hesitate to indulge that fat kid inside you. No judgement.
I have no idea how to eat Mole de Olla politely lol but I recommend it highly anyhow! At Agave this is a stew of tremendously long cooked meat on the bone with fresh corn, green beans and zucchini added at the last minute to a deeply flavorful broth, not very spicy despite the menu's promise. Served with lime wedges and half a dozen warm corn tortillas, a steal at $9.
They start you with free chips & salsa, clearly house made corn chips, largely unsalted, the sauce a pale orange with a nice dose of fresh cilantro but rather modest heat, good.
We enjoyed great service from our perfectly bilingual server, he answered questions about the food, these gringos didn't feel out of place at all 🙂
My dining companion got the enchilada platter, nicely grilled steak bits inside corn tortillas, all smothered in an interesting red chili sauce that was just a bit warm for her, mild for me. Arroz and frijoles on the side were very good too, yummy house made beans.
Vegetarian rating: 1 star, they're making no effort at all. Oh sure you can get guacamole & chips, a salad, maybe cheese quesadillas too. Frustrating bcos it's so easy to do great veg Mexican dishes, not here tho.
Very good food, low prices & great service means I'm a fan despite the lack of margaritas not to mention the location, which is well off the beaten path.
Working at Newark Airport has certainly limited my lunch to leftovers and the occasional visit to the employee cafeteria. Even though I'm so close to Ironbound and downtown my 30 minute break, is often less than exciting.
Desperate, I was browsing one day on Yelp for lunch within a couple mile radius and stumbled upon Aguilas. I read through some of the reviews, and thought it would be worth a shot. A couple of coworkers and I got together and ordered (1) Al Pastor tacos, (1) Carne de Res tacos, (1) Chorizo tacos and (2) sides of Guacamole. There are 4 tacos per order, and even though they weren't overflowing with meat, it ended up being a sufficient serving. The downsize to ordering takeout was the tacos and filling weren't exactly piping hot and looked less fresh than it would have had we sat down at the restaurant to eat. The meats seemed kind of dry, but again since it was takeout I am giving them the benefit of the doubt. My favorite was the al pastor because it was the most flavorful and tender. I'm not a huge fan of spicy foods, so I wouldn't try either of the salsas that came with the tacos. When I dabbed my finger to taste, all I could determine was that the green salsa was HOT and the red salsa was EVEN HOTTER. Our guacamole was good and I ended up putting it in my tacos. The fresh chips (to accompany the salsas) were really really good.
Now that I've tried the basics and for the most part, enjoyed the meal, I want to go back and try some of the more traditional Mexican dishes like chicken tinga, sopes and enchiladas.
I had the steak burrito. I dont think it was very impressive. I should have gotten the tacos, but maybe next time.
The guacamole is very good, maybe just guac and chips and a taco would be a fine lunch.
Its hard to find good Mexican food in northern NJ, for some reason, so we tried Agave, based on the good Yelp reviews. the guacamole was pretty good… better than average but not excellent. My friend got the chicken enchiladas in red sauce. They were a bit smaller than I usually see, and on the spicy side (which I like, but they were a little too hot for my friend). The rice on the side was overcooked… made w/ too much water and puffy and soggy, and the refried beans were just ok. The cactus salad wasn't that great. I got mole poblano for an entree, which had a good-tasting sauce, but it wasn't the real deal I was looking for (no chocolate in it), and the chicken itself could have been better.. The decor is pretty much non-existant… just a small TV playing a Brasil-Germany soccer match with otherwise plain walls. I guess you could call it a "hole in the wall", but it could easily be much more inviting if some thought was put into the decor. The place seemed clean. The waitress was truly nice and excellent, and the food came out pretty fast. Perhaps its a better bet for tacos for lunch, rather than planning on this place for a dinner. I'd try it again, but wasn't overly impressed.
I went to this place because of the 4 stars rating, however I am not fancy with the food, especially the flavor and taste.
For authentic Mexican food, the taste is bland, nothing social. Even the guacamole has no taste.
Will I go back again? No
I came with my gf on a rainy Tues night, no other customers were there. It seemed like a very home-like place. The waiter was very nice and willing to help with questions of the menu.
Food was good but a bit lacking in quantity.
-Beef tacos – their tacos only had meat, onions, and soft shell .. no tomatoes (had to pay extra), lettuce, etc. Taste-wise, the food was very flavorful!
-Chips and Guac – tasted homemade which was good! kinda pricey at $5 though
Overall, prob would only come back here on a blue moon. I feel like there's better places in the Ironbound.
