I had a tough time deciding between 3 or 4 stars. In a nutshell: Excellent food, friendly but abysmally slow service. Plus, no A/C, and it was pretty darn warm.
We were driving through from VA to NH on a Friday evening and stopped here for dinner because of the Yelp reviews. It's a fairly small place with about a dozen tables. We lucked out on our timing because there was one open table when we arrived, and there was a line of people waiting by the time we left. That's a good sign it's a good restaurant.
We waited a LONG time for a server to come to our table and take our drink orders. Then we waited a LONG time for him to come back with our drinks. Then we waited a LONG time for the food to come out. Then we flagged him down to get our check so we could get back on the road.
The waiter recommended the surf and turf burger, so I gave it a try. Chunks of shrimp mixed in with the burger. The burger and the sweet potato fries were EXCELLENT.
My 12 year old son is a very picky eater and frequently frustrates us by turning his nose up at food he is provided. Here at AJ's, he took one bite of his cheeseburger and said, "that is AMAZING!" I've NEVER heard him describe ANY food as "amazing" before.
I was a little nervous what I might feel like the next day. Sometimes when the food is "that" good, it's because there's MSG in the food and I wake up with a terrible headache the next morning. Not so here. I felt fine the next morning, so from what I can tell it was all fresh, natural ingredients.
So again, GREAT, DELICIOUS food. Service was very friendly and the manager seemed genuinely concerned about us, but it was very slow. So slow that I'm going to lower it from what would have been a 4 star review down to 3 stars. Still A-OK and worth the wait because the burgers were delicious.
I really wanted to like AJ's. But I couldn't.
We went there largely because it was close and had a yelp deal for free garlic rolls.
The garlic rolls were awesome, they brought out a whole skillet of them just for the two of us. However, getting to that point was an issue. When I showed the check in offer to the waitress, she was really confused- that happens, no biggie- but she went and showed it to the manager. She brought it back and said all was good, so I clicked that it had been redeemed. The manager then came over and asked to see it again, he asked who clicked the redeem button and I said I did just now. He just looked at me with an irritated expression and handed me the phone back. I have no idea what that was about but we got our garlic knots and didn't pay for them.
Then I ordered the pasta with chicken and broccoli in garlic butter sauce. Brian got a burger which he scarfed down. My pasta was, meh. It had the pasta, the chicken, the broccoli, the butter and the garlic so I don't know what I expected but it just didn't taste like anything except butter.
So less than pleasant service and bad pasta gets two stars.
I am tempted to give one more star just for the fact that they played Food Network on the televisions…
I should've written an update earlier than now because I've been going to Ajs since 2010 and it was my go to burger joint. Was, being the keyword.
A club burger and extra side of fries should not cost 24 dollars. I was okay paying 16 dollars for it just because it was so good, but to hear that the price has gone up again to 19 dollars is just flat out bullshit.
I'm sorry.
19 dollars. for a fucking cheeseburger is absurd. its actually 1 dollar more than my favorite plate at modern and that comes with pasta, salad, and the best chicken scarp of your life.
I hate to dwell on something so trivial as cost, because I am a firm believer that many times you have to pay for good food, but to a point. Im surprised that when they were on restaurant stakeout, the douchebag that hosts the show didn't chastise the prices. It would have kept me as a customer.
I hate to say, but I wont be returning to AJs…sorry Alan.
I've had this place bookmarked for a while and was in the area recently and decided to go check
It out. I was intrigued because they apparently have award winning burgers. After dining there, I'm starting to think they perhaps maybe awarded themselves?
We had ordered the habanero cheddar burger (medium well) – when I bit into it, only the outside was cooked, the inside was still completely pink but I was literally starving so did not care at the moment. I'm trying to figure out where the spice and the cheddar come into play because there was literally no cheese and zero spice? Just chopped tomato and lettuce that all fell out of my burger as I picked it up. At 15$ this burger comes with no side at all. (Why?) I ordered the Mac and cheese which literally was so bland, salt and pepper could not help it. After two bites, I set it aside. The burger came with tortilla chips that seemed stale. Those were left aside as well. The garlic roll the burger comes on was good but there was no garlic flavor. The burger itself was extremely dry and horribly seasoned. Very bland.
My friend got the club burger and at 19$, wow, what a disappointment. She added on for an extra charge the truffle fries which were soggy, cooked in old oil possibly from its weird taste and terribly seasoned. Why is this $7 ???? They had no flavor lol.
I felt like I was at a diner eating diner food but paying restaurant prices.
I got even more annoyed because we had 3 different people at our table. I couldn't tell which one my server was. Two of them seemed alright while one older lady just leaned over the counter literally staring at my table as we are the whole time. It was a little awkward, very weird. But they were all nice is why I give two stars.
Stars taken away for outrageous prices, terrible burgers and the skillets they are served on. Trying to pick up my burger was the biggest hassle without this goddamn skillet not falling onto me or on the floor due to how slippery it is. Ever heard of placement sets maybe?
With this review, safe to say, I will never in my life return to this establishment again and neither should you ..
When we first walked in to this place, we thought it was a pizzeria. We were promptly seated and the waiter gave us some great suggestions on what to order.
We started off with some calamari which was fantastic. Our burgers were perfectly cooked and the different types of bread were delicious. Depending on the time of day, parking could be a bit of a hassle but I think this is one of the best burgers in the area.
If you are looking for a greasy meal, this place delivers. They offer both American and Italian options. I mainly get the pulled pork sliders and fries which are both great. I'm not really into burgers anymore but I had a bite of my friends and it was satisfactory. I typically get it delivered when I am visiting a friend so I can't tell you much about the restaurants ambiance but the delivery service has been on point with bringing the correct order and being courteous. I would order from here again.
The cheesy bread is so good! Comes out hot and gooey in bite sizes with plenty of melted cheese and marinara sauce. The buyer I had was pretty good and the veggie eggplant burger someone else in my party had was also pretty good. The garlic bread was the best out of the three, though.
This seemed like a really fun place, with a wonderful menu. On a whim I ordered some take out here. Upon picking up my takeout, I had a friendly conversation with someone who seemed like the owner or manager. He was seriously nice, and he even threw in some extra food for me. Very nice!
Unfortunately I was not all that impressed with my meal. Items like the pulled pork stuffed nachos left little to be desired. The meat was bland, fatty, the nachos were dry, etc. The portion was rather large, but the flavor was un impressive. We also ordered a simple cheeseburger that was pretty good! I enjoyed the fries and some of the special sauces that came with it. Our meal also came with this little garlic knot type items. They were decent, but seriously oily. The oil was running down my finger as I was biting into them.
My favorite item was the Shrimp Bisque. I hear it is award winning? Not surprising, it was pretty awesome. I would go back there just to order thats soup again!
