Really solid midtown choice, not great but pretty OK. Shepard's salad is good, lentil soup is yummy, and chicken shish ke-bab is on target (careful of jalapenos). Service is good and the baklava type dessert is good. It's a forgotten choice and good for theater nights. Terrific vegetarian food type option. Bathroom is skevey though.
A surprise for a place I have walked by hundreds of times but never even thought of entering…until an invitation to meet there for lunch. It was worth it. Don't be fooled by the outside and the awning or the delivery team waiting eagerly for the food to be passed outside for swift delivery.
We were seated in a table which was very close to the rest of the patrons in the restaurant and we were able to hear all conversations, except that they were difficult to understand because we had to shout to make ourselves heard. Very loud setting.
I ordered the lamb kebab which was served with rice and slaw. It was a nice combination and the acidity of the slaw really helped counterbalance the salty seasoned meat. It was a nice size dish and despite the salty nature of the spices they use, it accentuated the flavor of the lamb and made the combination work. The rice was a neutralizer, although I do not generally eat much of that.
Overall a good spot for a quick lunch (despite the noise)
I've had Turkish food a few times, but I am not an expert… yet.
I was introduced to Turkish food earlier this year and I was not impressed, giving 3 stars to the others but Akdeniz is the best Turkish food I've ever had.
This place is easy to find, and we were seated right away. We ordered the cheese cigars which I've had a few times before but again, these were the best I've ever had. The Shepherd salad was amazing, again, best I've had. The ground meat skewer was perfectly cooked, and you guessed right, the best I've had.
The highlight of my dinner, was the dessert. The Turkish custard. This has to be one of the best things I have ever eaten, ever!!!!! Lucky for me, I am not big on sweets (weird, I know) but this got me hooked. It is so flavorful and just so satisfying. It spoke to me, emotionally, mentally, physically. Yep, I'm coming back here as soon as I'm in the city again….
I came in here with some family who were visiting from the UK, and were craving some turkish fare. There's a lot to choose from in the city, but my brother kept pushing towards this place so I said screw it, take a chance, Columbus did, right?
We pulled up in front and promptly found parking right in front of the restaurant, and soon made our way inside. They have a portable AC unit right by the door as soon as you come in and a pile up of pickup orders and a POS by the steps, which is a bit distracting, but I don't really care.
So, after being seated and having to put some tables together, ourselves, we were ready to go. Nobody really asked us what we wanted to drink, we were just served water. ALWAYS start with drinks.
We stopped a bus boy/waiter and asked him about a menu item, chopped chicken I believe it was, and he brought over Ozzy, a nice and humble server who explained the menu item to us. Before long we ordered away, and Ozzy got everything right. Food came out in prompt time and the bread basket with hummus was great.
The one down side was that I wanted a gyro platter, which Ozzy said they didn't serve past lunch, so I thought I'd just get something else; however, to my surprise my moms mixed platter came with some Gyro meat inside! What's this madness?!
I got a chicken cubes and beef skewer combo platter for myself and it was good for the most part. Some cubes of chicken were rough and just not tender at all, while others were great. The beef kabab was on point and the rice and greens were pretty good too. The real kicker was that there was absolutely no white sauce! I love Sahara in Brooklyn for the complimentary white sauce that they never forget, but this was insane! How can a restaurant serve turkish food without the white sauce on the table?
I don't care how you look at it, NOBODY serves kebabs without sauce.
I nicely asked for some white sauce all around for the table, and got two measly 4oz cups of the stuff, not from Ozzy but from another staff member. When I saw Ozzy again I explained that the entire table wanted white sauce, and he understood, finally. But, it was too late at that point, as everyone was pretty much done with their meal.
We opted out from getting dessert, and figured we'd go elsewhere. The only reason this place is getting 4 stars instead of 3 or even 2 is because of Ozzy, a true professional and courteous server. Thank you Ozzy!
Brought a consultant here for lunch. Being in Midtown near grand central, it's hard to come across good food. Found this place and was super excited since the only other Turkish restaurant I've tried in the area is Pera (nice decor but over priced food).
So I've tried the lamb adnana and the shish kabob platters here. Lamb adnana was ok, a bit dry and wasn't a huge fan. The shish on the other hand was delicious and moist! Good sized portions as well and service was excellent! I'll definitely be coming back here to try more items and recommend checking it out if you're in the area!
When my boyfriend was in the mood for
Turkish coffee (on a whim and out of the blue and while vacationing in Manhattan) I started searching and turned to yelp for help. I found this place just a few blocks from our hotel so we decided to give it a try. We arrived shortly after they opened. Service was very attentive. We had babaganoush and falafel as appetizers and shared the gyro. I don't usually like babaganoush but this was actually very good. The gyro meat was delicious but my favorite thing was the falafels. We finally ended our meal with turkish coffee. The boyfriend was happy. Happy enough to drink his and the rest of mine. (I prefer cafe Cubano 😉
Really good!
I was very surprised at how good this was considering the location. The prices are actually reasonable and the portions are generous.
Everything was fresh and tasted authentic – just as good as I've had in Turkey or anywhere else. You should know that the starters will easily make a meal if you get two. The prix fixe was also tempting but I didn't do it.
The only thing I would have liked to have tried was the gyro but the menu says it's only available during the day. Oh well, next time!
I wish I discovered this place earlier. Solid 5/5 restaurant in my opinion. I thought everything was on point from the moment my friend and I stepped in to the moment we left. The food, the ambiance, the service… I was just overall impressed.
There were only two things that I didn't really like. 1. I wasn't a fan of the bread. 2. I was originally planning to order the Classic Turkish Gyro, but they were out for the day.
Despite those two minor things, I really enjoyed the skewered ground meat entree that I got. My friend got the barbecued meatballs entree. I thought the meatballs weren't as good as the beef and lamb, but all tasted very good. The eggplant appetizer was pretty good as well.
Would I come back again?? Of course. This is my new favorite restaurant in Midtown.
