  1. This place is related to Trader Joe's, yay!  I always get a small pack of mushrooms here, haha.  We've also gotten some risotto and other random things for good prices.  The only con is that you have to pay in cash, and they don't give you bags unless you pay for it (although I always have my backpack, and we really should be going more green like in other cities!).

  2. When you go to Aldi, here are a few helpful hints:

#1 Bring a quarter to rent the shopping cart (not sure who is stealing shopping carts but apparently they are worth a quarter a piece)

#2 Bring your own shopping bags – sometimes they have empty boxes but if you don't have your own bag, you might be carrying your groceries one by one out of there

#3 Don't expect brand name food items or alcohol or a large variety. However, almost all of their canned, frozen, and boxed good are cheaper than anywhere else you go

#4 Make sure you check the produce before you buy, sometimes it is good, sometimes it isn't

#5 Have cash or a debit card – no credit cards accepted

  3. Bring your own bags!

  4. This is a bag it yourself, we don't take credit under a certain amount endeavor with lots of off brand items but if you're looking for a deal on milk or aren't picky about getting a name brand, you'll do well in here.  Just make sure you bring your own bags and sufficient cash.  Staff is really friendly though it does seem to get packed here.

  5. I like to check out the deals at this store. I do have a problem with the cash or debit card only.
I never buy large quantities since you need to supply your own bags too. I'm usually loaded with COSTCO purchases when I go there.
I did go with the purpose to shop mainly at Aldo my last trip. I checked the expiration dates on some of the items. I wanted to stock up on snacks and cereals for the winter. The expiration dates were very close to expire. Just be careful to check! I ended up leaving without buying what I came to buy. Better luck next time I hope.

  6. This place is so awesome!!! A total bizarro-third dimension of off brand products, but absolutely excellent prices.

If you have been in need of Wal-mart like prices and Save-a-Lot type brands, this is the place for you. A lot cheaper than most of the uptown stores, including Trader Joes. I would come here for basics, and head else where for your fancy sauces and what not- this place is pretty plain jane.

I bought about $30 worth of stuff that would have cost me $50 at TJ's and probably $60+, and the off brand Special K with Red Berries that I had for dinner was EXCELLENT!

They have a pretty decent fresh food section as well as packaged and canned. I didn't see any expired items, and everything was pretty big, no tiny milks!

Don't forget no grocery bags (they have totes and sacks you can buy), and only debit or cash!  Also the M116 takes you about one block away and you can catch it from almost every major train station if you need!

  7. A little out of the way – but a nice no-frills grocery store.  If you're looking to save $$$, this is a great way to do it.  Their products are mostly all store brand, but everything I've tried is pretty good quality.  Love their hummus and french onion dip…especially for under $2 each!  Can't beat their prices in Manhattan!  I also prefer their plain baked potato chips to Baked Lays, and they're about half the price!  Great place to stock up on canned veggies/soups/mixes for super cheap.  They have a decent selection of fresh produce and meat – probably can't find everything you're looking for in those categories here, but you can tackle the better portion of your list!  Last summer I had a BBQ for about 20 + people and only spent about $40 on ALL of the food….and I bought TONS!  Now that the weather is getting nice again, I'm doing my best to make a Saturday morning grocery run at Aldi!

FYI – Aldi only takes debit cards or cash, so keep that in mind.  Also, bring your own bags – they aren't free here.  You'll also have to bag your own groceries.

  8. Aldi is like a lower priced version grocery store with brands you had never heard of. My sister said Aldi groceries were cheap brands at cheap prices. The first time  I blitzed in and out. The second time worked like a charm. I actually found some organic brand I had never heard of but it was organic and some brands I had, like Naked Blue Machine. It looks like a discount grocery store with brands laid out without any thought to luring you by anything but price. The lighting here is dim and grey to remind you that you are not shopping by esthetics and some clever marketing ploy. Again price. Vegetables and fruits here are cheaper than at the nearby Target and packaged so that you don't need to feed a family, unlike at Costco. Worth a quick stop and a browse.
