  1. Newark being filled with Portuguese restaurants this place is a good spot.  The food is fresh and the menu is large.  I had the rib eye which was delicious, the piece of meat was cooked to perfection.  it came with a side of rice and vegetables which was also very good.

Sangria was good.  We actually had the blue sangria which was a first for me and something I would definitely order again next time I come back.

Overall this is a good spot, its designed well and theres also a large outdoor space to eat during good weather.  I can't wait to come back.

  2. The family decided to take me here and 'surprise' me for my birthday. Gotta say, after eating at bad Portuguese places in Newark, I was a bit hesitant. However, this place is an exception just like Mompou is.

We had a huge table, I think there were like 11 people in all. We all just ended up getting a lot of appetizers and entrees and sharing them. A few of us had our own entrees. The place was nice, bright, lovely waiters. They were so sweet and we were quickly seated even though there were 11 of us.  Even the chefs were nice too. One of them waved at my little cousins, I thought that was cute.

For drinks, we all shared a big pitcher of sangria. It was really nice, not too sweet but not too much alcohol.

For appetizers, I remember them ordering the octopus salad, fresh oysters on the half shell, the conch salad, clams in garlic sauce, shrimp in garlic sauce, and another octopus dish. I remember enjoying every dish except one octopus dish which was a bit too fishy for my liking and this is coming from a Vietnamese person in which her native cuisine's main condiment is fish sauce. However, considering that the oysters were like 11 bucks, they were kind of small. But they were good nonetheless, I can never pass up raw oysters (I sort of finished the whole plate. What? It was my birthday!)

For entrees, I ordered paella. BAD move, It was pretty terrible. I hated it, it was just like Adega Grill's paella. Too fishy, watery, a lot of tiny shrimp, and too much meat. (I keep having a bad experience with paella everywhere I go in Newark unfortunately) However, the reason I'm giving this place 4 stars is because everyone else's entrees were great. My friend's salmon was amazing. So good with yummy potatoes on the side, my cousin's lamb was also really good (of course we omitted that icky green mint gelatine. I don't know how any one could like that mint stuff, it's like mouthwash in gelatine form), someone else ordered steak and lobster which was good too.

Dessert (I think we ordered half  of the menu). I had the flan which was really nice (they gave me these sparkling candles), my friend had the cheesecake I think. I forget, this was a while ago but I remember everything being really good. Oh and to top it off, there was a live band playing. That was super cool, my first experience with that one. All in all, it was a great experience.

  3. Went to this place for a random dinner yesterday and it's not bad at all!

I did not have reservations however I was able to get a table out back. The area clean well maintained with a bar and a few tables.

The staff was friendly and very good. Our server checked in on us at least every 5 minutes which I can really appreciate.

The food was absolutely delicious. I ordered the rack of lamb (mine) medium rare, every piece was cooked just right and cooked just right.

My friend had the surf and turf, her steak was also medium and good. Not the best steak I've had but definitely good.

The presentation of the food could use some work but hey it's not super expensive like it is in the city. Between the 2 of us the bill was just under 100.

  4. I have been to Allegro twice now and was impressed both times.

The service is friendly and accommodating, food is delicious, and atmosphere is beautiful.

My first visit to Allegro was on my first night in Newark. While very busy at around 9 on a Saturday night, the man who greeted us took time to welcome us to the neighborhood and make room for us to be seated for dinner. (I recommend making a reservation just to be safe). My guest and I each ordered a drink. She had a red sangria and I had a mojito. Both were well presented and delicious. We were unsure of what to order so we ordered a mixed grill for two. We were very pleased with our order. Tons of food, could've fed a family of four. Delicious variety of meats and vegetables. We also noticed how delicious the appetizers at neighboring tables looked.

So the second time we went to Allegro, it was around 5:00 on a Saturday for appetizers and drinks before going out in the city. As we had hoped, the calamari, crab stuffed avocado and mushrooms with balsamic and mozzarella were delicious. We ran into a crowd of regulars who bought us some shots (delicious pastel de nata shot) and seemed pretty happy with the place. Again, the service was great.

  5. Allegro is one of my new spots to eat in Newark, especially during the summer. There's a large outdoor patio to eat during the warmer months. What I like about Allegro is that the food itself is pretty traditional. It's hard to find a good decent Portuguese restaurant in Newark that hasn't changed the way food is made to cater to the American palate.

Since I've always been there with groups of people, we usually order a couple of appetizers and entrees to share amongst each other. First, we all shared a big pitcher of the Allegro Sangria – it's a MUST TRY! It was really refreshing and not too sweet.  For appetizers we ordered the baby clams and the octopus salad. The seafood is fresh and delicious! For entrees, we ordered the veal in Port Wince Sauce, the Mixed Grill for 4 people, and the Grilled Cod Fish.

The Port Wine gave the veal a distinct, good flavor. It was accompanied by white rice and potatoes. The meats in the Mixed Grill were delish! It was juicy, full of flavor, and not overdone al all! The Grilled Cod Fish was pretty good too (I'm not really a fish fanatic so I could have passed it up easily). The cod fish was prepared just the way any Portuguese mom would prepare it at home.

Their only downfall is the service. The waiters are very friendly, but they weren't very attentive and did forget to check up to see if everything was ok here and there.

Overall, I would recommend Allegro for their food and environment!

  6. 3.5 stars. Went there the other night with a pretty large group (abt 15 of us.) the place was packed but the vibe was live and good. I'll start with the highlights (for me at least.) the calamari was perfectly fried and fresh. While I didn't have it, everyone at the table raved about the octopus salad as well as the mushrooms with cheese and balsamic. Another thing I though was delicious was the pomegranate sangria. Not a huge punch, but very flavorful. The oysters (blue points) were very fresh but not properly shucked. Just abt everyone that got steak was asking for the salt to be passed across the table. That's a no no. I bit into one of my vegetable and it was still frozen in the middle.  this is a high volume place, please use fresh produce. I would certainly return to see if Allegro can pull of the other half star. Go eat. ENJOY!!!
