Amber Kips Bay
“The drinks are a bit over priced, but they have a great happy hour that last until 8!”
“But Murray Hill is not known for its high taste level, thankfully there's good food to be found beyond the neon.”
“It's darker inside with louder music, so maybe not the best place if you're wanting to have a ser-con with someone, but that certainly wouldn't prevent me from going back.”

Love the food. Love the drinks. I've been coming here for 5 years and always bring tons of friends. The problem is the music is horrible!!! It was never like this! The atmosphere is no good! They are better off playing the radio! Really brings my mood down coming here… Don't come here to have fun . It wasn't like this last year.. Not sure what happened ..
I have a soft spot for this place even if nothing is particularly outstanding. Great ambiance and pretty spacious (there always seems to be seating upstairs). Decent food – the lettuce wraps are delicious, and the sushi have a lot going on and are always charmingly-presented. The drinks are also great and innovative, especially if you can catch the happy hour deals. Wonderful service.
I have come here quite a few times over the years, and it's always delivered on my expectations. Kudos for consistency!
a group of 9 of us stopped by for lunch on a sunday.
they had lots of open seats (is that a bad sign?) so we were seated easily.
Food: their lunch specials were pretty good deals!
-teriyaki salmon bento box: the salmon was good. a lil dry but tasty. i liked how they kept some skin on. the shumai were average. The salmon roll was pretty good. it'll leave you full for about $15-$16 (taxtipincluded)
-thai crispy chicken: the chicken was actually really well cooked with a nice crisp on the outside. The sauce was good too… but it was very FAMILIAR… until i realized it tasted exactly like Mae Ploy International Sweet Chili Sauce (and they added some pineapple chunks). i mean, i love that sauce.. but i think they could be a lil more creative with "thai"
-drunken noodles w/ chicken: not bad for a place that's not thai, but nothing amazing.
-sashimi: i did not try it, but my friend who ordered it said it wasn't bad, but she didn't end up finishing it. Was she full??? or was it bad??? we'll never know…
-salad and miso soup: good! it should always be good. if you mess this up…. tsk tsk
price: not bad for lunch special with sushi
Did i love it? no. Did I hate it? no. Would I come back? probably not. so many options in the city! just walk a few more blocks… (unless someone was else was paying for me.)
A sushi place that has ample room for a Saturday night and good sushi to boot. For starters, we got the Spicy Salmon Pancake (delicious it's like a sushi pizza), and the Rock Shrimp. For the meal, we went "overboard" and got 2 specialty rolls: The Golden Dragon (wouldn't recommend if you're not into sweets or mango) and the Green Dragon (would definitely recommend), in addition to the Baltimore and the Spicy Sea Scallops (both wouldn't recommend, not because they were bad but outshined by the Green Dragon). Overall, decent spot and good alternative if the more popular sushi spot around the corner is packed.
Good food. Cheap price. Cute decor. Serves alcohol. Ideal for a dinner with a friend or a date. The service was a little slow, but the staff is friendly.
I've made this mistake before, but I did it again: DO NOT order Thai food from a Japanese restaurant.
I was craving some noodles and sushi, so I went all out and ordered the Three Rolls lunch special as well as Pad Thai from Amber Kips Bay. I live about 1.5 miles away from Amber, and the delivery took 85 minutes. I had to call the restaurant to inquire about the whereabouts of my food, was put on hold for 15 minutes, and finally got an answer that the delivery man had left and on the way.
When the food finally arrived, the Pad Thai and the miso soup were served cold. The sushi was lukewarm. Amber, you lost me here already.
The food also tasted bad, especially the Pad Thai. I got the beef pad thai, and not only was it EXTREMELY dry and bland, but even the lime wedge on the side was all dried out and didn't have any juice. The pad thai basically had a couple pieces of meat, all noodles, and no real eggs, bean sprouts, or other vegetables.
The sushi rolls were okay. I got them with brown rice, and I was pleased that Amber didn't upcharge me $0.50/roll for substituting for brown rice like most other places. The fish to rice ratio was satisfying, but I really hated that the sushi rolls tasted lukewarm from taking forever to be delivered. The eel was really fatty and not enough cucumber to balance out the texture.
This is a bro-ey dive bar masquerading as a sushi joint. Despite better sushi joints in the area (Maguro, East Japanese), Amber is superior for having a TV and a bar if you're hanging out with friends, but the food really doesn't make the cut. They have half priced appetizers on Sunday afternoon, which was what lured me in. Unfortunately, dousing all the fish in sweet rich sauces like spicy mayo and teriyaki doesn't make it Japanese.
Went for lunch. Place was nearly empty. All chairs downstairs are high bar stool like. I was seated at the bar which is understandable because they have a handful of multi-patron tables. I saw more upstairs, but I'm assuming those are used for dinner or if the place fills up.
I ordered the sushi / sashimi lunch special which includes soup, salad and shrimp gyoza and California rolls. Food was all good. The fish was fresh. Service was quick. Price including gratuity was $20 which was a good deal considering the quality and quantity.
