  1. I came here to catch up on my summer ice cream consumption, which I have neglected terribly. I have a list of New York ice cream shops I need to try this summer and I've just started on my ice cream adventures.

This Ample Hills Creamery is in a great location. It's right next to the highline, which is a perfect place to slurp down some melting ice cream. Even though the ice cream shop is small, it still has a couple of colorful booths inside to eat in. I really have nothing bad to say about Ample Hills. Their ice cream is truly out of this world! They give generous samples and scoops. I shared a 6 scoop flight with my boyfriend and it was an insane amount of ice cream. These are the flavors we ate:

Ooey Gooey Butter Cake – There are some really big pieces of cake in the ice cream, which are great. Other than that, it was the least distinctive of the ones I tried. It was, however, still delicious.

Snap Mallow Pop – A deconstructed rice krispy treat in the batter. This flavor really stuck out. I absolutely loved it!

The Munchies – The ice cream base really tasted like pretzel! I loved this flavor and it went really well with Snap Mallow Pop.

Nonna D's Oatmeal Lace – Delicious! It's filled with lots of cinnamon and crunchy cookie bits.

Salted Crack Caramel – Wow!!! Truly a mind blowing ice cream. Every bite of it was pure heaven. This one is a must try!

Floatin' on the Highline – I didn't expect to like this flavor, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that I did. It really has s strong taste of root beer. It tasted really great combined with the Salted Crack Caramel.

  2. Not my favourite ice cream joint. Staff were not very friendly, but they did have a nice array of flavours–even one with potato chips. It's pricey for a kid's scoop ($4.25). I had the root beer flavour which was refreshingly tasty on a hot summer day!

  3. Amazing. I can't even give it justice by writing a review. This place serves the best ice cream I have ever had. My husband said this was the best ice cream he ever had, and he is not one to give a sweet bleep about ice cream…
You get to sample your creamy delights before taking your final decision. The small cup is enough for 2 scoops. I went with the "ooey goey butter cake" with legit pieces of harden butter cookies and the "Nonna D's oatmeal" which is basically a cinnamon/butter ice cream with caramelized brown sugar Cookie Crisps folded within the ice cream. It's unbelievable.
I also tried the salted crack caramel, it was great, but a little too burned for me.
Best ice cream in New York. Zagat rated 27. Not kidding.
If you gonna have real ice cream, that is the place to go. Unfreakingbelievable.

  4. A sad truth: I'm not sure I'll ever find a 5 star ice cream joint in NYC. Ample Hills has solid flavor options and good hard ice cream, but the experience and price are both on the "meh" side.

Because it's shoved in the same space as Bubby's High Line, the space at this location has almost nothing to work with. Upon opening the door, you're awkwardly forced into the front of the line with little room to move or file in which is both confusing and chaotic. On a recent steaming hot day, I noticed several people who couldn't make it inside the door – not because there wasn't enough space in the line, but because of how strange the entrance/setup is. Definitely a bummer that prolongs the experience, since it takes everyone a long time to look at and decide on flavors once they finally manage to grab a spot in line.

I loved the sweet cream & cookies flavor that was in rotation when I visited, and I treated myself to a chocolate chip cone which was also really tasty with an on-point texture. A small scoop and novelty cone set me back $7 which is iiiiiinsane. It hit the spot and cured my sweet tooth on a 90+ degree day, but that's not really a cost I can justify repeatedly when there's plenty of other cool/trendy ice cream around the city.

  5. I consider myself a bit of an ice cream connoisseur, so it was an embarrassment that I had yet to try Ample Hills prior to this past weekend. I made it a priority to make it to the relatively new outpost at Bubby's right off the highline on a stormy summer night, expecting it to be pretty empty. Though there was no snaking line out the door, even raindrops didn't stop dedicated New Yorkers from getting their ice cream fix and there were plenty of people in line. I liked that they have two booths to sit at as well, rather than just a grab and go counter.

The ordered the small size, which was $5.25 and got me two generous scopes. I chose the ooey gooey butter cake and the oatmeal lacie, both of which were delicious. My date got the vanilla bean, which I completely overlooked in favor of the more unique and exciting flavors, but it was phenomenal. The ice cream is VERY rich, creamy, and heavy, so the small size was more than enough (and I rarely feel that way about I cream).

  6. Looking for quality AND quantity in your dessert? Ample Hills offers a beautiful $10 flight – 6 kid's scoops of whichever flavors your heart desires!

The line can be a bit slow, but that is because the employees take their time helping the customers, providing samples, and making recommendations. After a fair amount of sampling, my friend and I split a flight, and the highlights were definitely the ooey gooey butter cake and the dude (White Russian/coffee flavored).

Don't be deceived by the small size – the flight has a substantial amount of ice cream. Definitely recommend sharing.

  7. Always the best place for fun flavors, I made sure to try a few (Peppermint :O) before settling on the Snap Crackle Pop, Rice Krispy Treat flavor! Somehow, by a miracle, the rice krispys in the ice cream stay super crunchy. They're a good mix-in with the sweet marshmallow ice cream, lending a savory aspect to the mix.

One star lost for $$$ and very little space at this location (it's attached to a restaurant).

  8. I was really looking forward to this place, but disappointed with what I ended up with.  I had the Pie Shake, which was disappointing since it had WAY too much milk and the peanut butter pie slice added wasn't very good.  I would have complained, but as soon as I got the shake I left the area.

The ice cream flavors looked great and the samples I did try seemed very good…I'll definitely want to come back and try them…I just won't go for the Pie Shake next time.
