This review is based on 2 take out experiences. The food wasn't the best. Although they threw in a free dessert, they skimped on the chutneys.
I must admit, I am not familiar or well versed in the culinary world that is Indian food. My comfort zone does not usually exceed "Tikka Masala" or "Tandoori" which needs to change soon. Considering those are both equally delicious flavors, it's hard to say no since I don't eat this food often. I need to expand my Indian food pallet.
It only took me over a year to venture to Andaz. This is one of those places I have passed by many times, even peeked into the window… but never actually went in. It was my last day working at my job on the UES and my co-workers were kind enough to bring me to Andaz for the $10.95 lunch buffet. (Which I was informed that it is now indeed back from a long hiatus.)
The inside is cozy and well arranged. It's classier than what I would expect of a buffet. The staff encourages you to put down your stuff and get right ahead to eating! They restaurant clearly labels each dish and are happy to tell you what is in it. –For all you vegetarians out there! I sampled a bit of everything.
-Samosa salad: interesting take of the bold spices in a samosa (curry) in a cold form. No shell, but all the important stuff was there. Interestingly and well done,
-Chicken Tikka Masala: creamy, spicy, smooth flavors. All around delicious.
-Tandoori Chicken: has that great charred taste and fall off the bone meat.
-Yellow Daal: Yellow lentils cooked down with cumin.
-Gulab Jamun: interesting looking balls of dough "dumplings" fried and soaked in syrup. I'd like to think of it as a mini donut. Don't judge it by its looks. (Trust me, I wouldn't have guessed it was a dessert either.)
They also give you a nice basket of warm Nan.* The entire buffet is nicely set up and don't be shy about getting seconds or (if you can) thirds. It's quite a filling lunch so it's worth the bills. And considering this is one of the few Indian establishments on the UES, it's worth the travel.
*I swear I could have just eaten the Nan the entire meal. It's that good. They must be putting magic in those pillowy pieces of heaven.
One of my go-to Indian spots in the neighborhood (the other one being Papadam).
The lunch buffet is a great deal and most importantly, has never gotten me sick thus far. The notable entrees here are the fish curry (when they have it), lamb curry, and saag paneer. The chicken tikka is not bad but could be spicier. The tandoori chicken also could be better if other chicken parts were used besides drum sticks.
I don't come here that often… Maybe once a month. But it is worth noting that the wait staff are always friendly and helpful, willing to talk about what food they are serving and ingredients. Always a pleasant experience here, thanks!
If you are on the upper east side, and need a decent place to eat… you can count on Andaz.

I've ordered from here a few times. Their daal tadaka (yellow daal/ lentils with white rice) is fantastic – lentils solid, not just a puréed sauce. In grad school I met an Indian woman who introduced me to this dish, made me a bit particular, and I really like the way they make theirs.
The papri chat is great, just the right amount of crunch, chic peas and a perfectly flavored sauce.
They also gave a complimentary rice pudding dessert which was a nice gesture and very good.
Service on the phone and delivery time and service are great. Highly recommend for Indian food/ delivery.
I was meeting some friends in the East 70s so I decided to check out Andaz. It was lunch time on the weekend, so they had a buffet. This is definitely not your average lukewarm temperature, lukewarm quality, buffet. They had so many options, including chicken tikka masala, egg curry, veggie curry, saag paneer, two different types of dal, and a couple of other dishes. On top of all of that, included in the buffet meal was a plate of tandoori chicken that was brought to the table along with a crispy eggplant dish with a savory sauce. They also give you a plate of naan bread hot out of the oven.
Overall, the quality and quantity of food at this lunch buffet was excellent. The service was also on point.
Pros: Good food, lots of options, and good service.
Con: Not the lowest-priced Indian lunch buffet I've seen in the city, but the high quality makes up for a slightly higher price which is still a good deal.
I goto Andaz once a week, every week for their lunch buffet. They've made me a regular customer because it is affordable, clean and very very fresh with good service. It is one of the best buffets I've experienced in Manhattan.
The appetizers rotate and are usually 2 salads with 1 Indian type appetizer like a deconstructed samosa or a delicious eggplant with tamarind sauce (my favorite item there).
As far as entrees, they always have rice with chicken tikka masala. I will admit the chicken is often dry but the masala base makes up for it. It is rich, creamy and savory. The other entrees rotate every week from fish or egg curry to chicken kofta, with at least 2 other vegetarian dishes. I'm not much of a desert fan and havent tried it yet.
The service is very courteous. The facility is clean. I'd give this place 5 stars if they would be a bit more bold with their spices and flavors. I feel like this is not necessarily Andaz's problem but a problem among most Indian restaurants in Manhattan — they seem to be a bit timid with the spice. Otherwise, Andaz is a great place for a weekend buffet!

Andaz was monumental in helping my husband with his proposal to marry me. They worked with him to create an off-site event at a reasonable price when NO ONE else would be able to do it! They are amazing. And I had the greatest proposal known to man kind, so I am very pleased!
Aside from their willingness to serve their customers in ANY way; their food is just YUM! YUM! YUM!
Great Indian food and great option for UESiders; I hated always going to the overpriced and over rated Baluccis.
