I visited AB after hearing high praises about the vegetarian cuisine. My Godparents raved about the food. After my 1st visit I now understand the hype. Annam is the sister to the local vegan cafe Panorama of My Heart located just north on Parsons. This location is very eye catching because of the chic light blue paint and alluring window display.
I was not expecting Panorama Part II when I entered the restaurant and had no idea they were related having not done my homework. The vibe here is very zen and peaceful. I caught myself experiencing a room full of people but these serene peaceful moments of silience. Either that or too many people were lost in a food coma.
I was captivated by the beautiful window shrine display paying homage to the founder. A white linen sofa, fresh flowers, books and photos. I studied the menu and the waitress informed us of the daily specials. I decided on the Palik Paneer mixed with vegetable curry, dal
And basmati rice. I later paired that with fresh Naan. I also ordered a Ginger Peppermint iced tea. For my daughter I ordered steamed vegetables, dal and basmati rice as well. The other guests ordered koftka and began meatball kabob. When our food arrived it was everything I imagined and more. I always order Palik Paneer (cheese spinach curry) so it definitely met my expectations. The dal was tasty but I missed the spice. Next visit I will definitely go spicier.
::Cues Rihanna:: CAKE! CAKE! CAKE!!!!! The vegan desserts were out of this world good. We were celebrating a birthday and the desserts were just the right way to celebrate. The Carrot cake was delicious. Moist, filled with fresh raisins, walnuts and full of carrot. The Layered Chocolate Cake was HEAVENLY! They also have a coconut crusted Dark chocolate cheesecake. Amazing! Out of all the local indian eateries this one definitely takes the literal CAKE.
Everything here is perfectly made. They take their time cooking. So You know it's real.
The 5 star reviews lived up to my experience and I will be back.
This place was so serene that it was intimidating. As other reviewers have said, the servers were a little bit off. But they were really nice, genuine people. They were all obvious followers of Sri Chinmoy and I wouldn't be surprised if this used to be his home. His works and quotes and pictures were posted on every wall and in every corner. A video of one of his talks was also being played on a 20-year old television.
No one was around when we walked in and it seemed like we were trespassing in an Indian family's giant house. It was super awkward but refreshingly unexpected. It's very rare to see international items like burgers and pasta at an Indian vegetarian place, but they sure pull it off as one best can.
I got a malasa dosa but what stood out the most was their dal. Up until I came here, I didn't really know what dal was or even cared to know. But this buttery gravy-like sauce filled me with such savory joy that I had to ask what it was. I later wikipedia'd it and also asked my Indian friends. It's made of lentils but instead of tasting bean-y, it tastes kind of awesome.
If i could choose between Oneness Heart Fountain and here, i'd be Oneness hands down.
I came here because I was visiting someone at the Margaret Tietz rehab home and needed lunch.
Don't get me wrong, the food isn't bad…. it tastes fine. I only find it somewhat expensive. I ordered the Masala Dohsa and the soup of the day. Everything was delicious, but I felt the soup was TINY for the price. I ordered take-away, so maybe they don't have larger cups??? I ordered the large soup (bowl, rather than cup sized) but received only a small Styrofoam cup's worth of soup…. that's not cool… man, if a bowl is that tiny, how big is a cup? one of those Alice in wonderland-sized cups? I'd get more volume out of a sippy cup than that!
the Dohsa tasted good, but for 9 something dollars… i really expected either something with more flavor or something bigger. Again, it tasted good… but for 9 something bucks… its eh
Finally… the neighborhood isn't the most savory area. This restaurant sorta… we'll say… stands out against the deli, greasy Chinese food joint and auto chop shop nearby.
Food in this area generally gets more volume for your dollar and so this place really clashes with the neighborhood.
