Well, I don't know what Rose is talking about. Applebee's used to be a restaurant that was appealing in appearance but petered out on paper when looking at the menu. I think they've beefed it up a bit for the better.
Literally. My friend treated me to an Angus cheeseburger here for my birthday. (we kept that to ourselves, as I've had singing waiters bearing cake a'plenty) They forgot the bacon (blasphemous!) and our waitress slid us a plate with more bacon than one could ever hope to see on a restaurant burger. She was really pleasant, naturally so, and even though she was a bit hard to get hold of we tipped her generously. That effortless smile and easy-going attitude make all the difference.
The musical mix was hilarious, and we split the brownie dessert despite the busting seams of our jeans. That thing Has to be split. Not dry or overrich, it's two brownie pieces and two scoops of vanilla ice cream. Mmm. To top it off I got the mocha whatever drink with kahlua in it, and that thing was good.
Bathrooms were fine & clean, although freezing cold? Applebee's is a chain joint, so I don't know what you want there. The staff is pretty great if you think about the awfulness of certain restaurant staffs. And, hey, their fries are irresistable.
With a co-worker on the clock we came here for lunch to briefly escape the hectic office world of a white collar worker. I have never been a fan of franchise nor chain restaurants as the quality of food is mediocre and mass produced. We ordered the lunch special of "two for $20.00" for one shared appetizer of boneless wings. My individual entree is double-glazed baby rack ribs. My co-worker's entree was lemon chicken. Service is average. Preparation of food took entirely too long to be served. No alcohol libations for either of us as we were on-the-clock.
Needing a bite after the gym, we decided to stop at Applebee's for a salad. It being right next door to Target also didn't hurt.
I arrived prior to my boyfriend and was sat promptly at a booth. I waited..quite a while for a server. By the time my boyfriend arrived, about five to seven minutes later we were still not approached by a server and he was shocked that not even water was on the table.
He suggested we moved to the bar area for a high top table. Excellent suggestion, we walked over and again was sat shortly. We were greeted (quickly) by our new server, Kevin. And we were happy we made the switch.
Kevin was friendly and knowledgeable of the menu. He took our order right away, ceasar salad for me with a side of vegetable medley and for him honey bbq wings and a Green Goddess wedge salad.
The food took a little while to come out but Kevin was attentive and regularly checked to see if we were okay and if we needed refills. Thanks Kevin!
All in all the experience was A-OK. Kevin was the reason we had such a pleasant experience so we appreciated that.
I was in the area a few weeks ago on personal business and needed a place to enjoy an afternoon cocktail. As I was on 225 Street and Broadway, which is a shoppers haven with a dozen or so large chain stores; I saw an Applebee's. While I am not a big fan of casual chain restaurants; why not.
As I walked in, I notice a Happy Hour sign. Nice. I went straight to the $5 Long Island Ice Tea. When in Rome, blah, blah, blah. While I was told it was a premixed drink; I noticed the bartender making a drink from scratch. It was professionally made, but the taste was just blah. I found it to sweet. Maybe to much sweet and sour mix. Maybe this is how it is made.
I did not order any food, but I did notice app's and entrees coming out from the kitchen and they did look tasty. I guess I had their commercials in my mind. They make them very appealing.
Overall, this location was just a location that served food and drink, it had no energy or vibe. Maybe it was shift changed. Maybe it was the 4'" high numbers to mark TV locations (this was driving me crazy). Maybe this is Applebee's. I have enjoyed many a bar in the Bronx. Lots of fun, but this location was just blah, blah, blah. This Applebee's is a standard restaurant, for standard food and standard drink. The standard was/is standard.
So it's a chain (and a rather low brow one at that) but the people that work here really make the difference. I noticed that the staff really made the extra effort to make sure their customers were comfortable/enjoying their meal.
Just like all the other Applebee's locations as far as ambiance, decor, and food but the service at this one can be touch-and-go.
I've eaten here a handful of times when we would make our Target runs. Sometimes the service is quite good and other times I felt like I was fending for myself. The restaurant is never full, but can get quite busy during the lunch hours and on weekends. I notice that every time I'm there, there are always issues with the tables near the windows and people outside; e.g. homeless people standing and staring.
I stopped going to Target and so stopped coming here. If I'm in the area and need a quick bite, then I may stop by again but it is highly unlikely.
