We really enjoyed our dinner at Asea. It's great to see new places opening in our part of the Slope and it's a bonus when the menu offers something different. Although Asea has a large sushi menu, there are also loads of Malaysian choices and what I thought was straight-up Thai until we spoke with the owner, who explained that Malaysian cuisine had adopted and adapted many Thai dishes. We tried the Tom Yum soup, which was absolutely delicious. The broth was fabulous – pretty traditional Thai and very flavorful, unlike the sad broth that gets passed off by our neighborhood places – but there were tons of veggies, squid and mussels that would not be found in the Thai version. We also had the roti canai, which was ok; the roti was piping hot & puffy and the sauce was good but a little bland for me. Then we tried two specials: tuna & salmon tacos, which were pretty yummy, and something I can't remember the name of but the owner said was the national dish of Malaysia. Winner winner chicken dinner! It was a platter with coconut rice, chicken rendang, sambal sauce, hard boiled egg, cucumber, and peanuts with tiny fried fish. Mix together or eat separately; either way, totally delicious. The tiny fish were crunchy and addictive, kind of like tiny potato sticks. Luckily my husband didn't like them so there were more for me! The check was extremely reasonable – in part because they don't yet have a liquor license – and the service was super friendly. I can't wait to go back and try more Malaysian dishes.
I almost gave them a 3 due to very slow service at end as asked for check then needed to ask again. Food was good though nothing special. Great place if want Asian but group cannot decide on which country as ramen noodles are next to Thai basil rice. Both dishes were good. Neither as good as likely finding in local Japanese or Thai place but then that is not the point. If back in park slope will come here again.
I'm moving to this area soon and can see this restaurant becoming a quick go-to/favorite. Came for lunch and the place was very quiet. Got the Yelp check in free appetizer which was delicious and the two roll lung special which came with salad. The rolls are really big here and I was so full and happy when I left, and for only around $10 with tax! The staff was really nice and friendly. I'll definitely be back!
