This isn't my preferred supermarket, so when I shop here its usually to get a deli made sandwich which this review primarily focuses on. They're very good and easily beat out 'Subway' in both amount of choices and taste. The sandwiches are delicious here and the don't cheat you on the meat. You can get all types of bread you'd normally get a sandwich on. I had the 'caddy shack' – maple ham, lettuce, tomato, canadian cheddar cheese, with deli mustard. Fresh, flavorful and a decent size. The counter staff are always helpful as is the rest of staff here it seems.
The store is usually clean, the layout is decent and their stock is pretty good. Its the high prices are what scares me away normally. This store is like a convenient Whole foods as far as prices, but with an awesome deli counter. If you want shop here go for it, I recommend the sandwiches and hot bar though. Shop elsewhere for your standard grocery needs unless you get paid like a pro athlete.
I was in the mood for a fresh pastrami and cheese sandwich & Eden delivered. I've purchased lunch and desserts from here sporadically. This is the best meal I've has this far.
I still stand by my previous review–the products and store in general are fine. The cheese selection is actually smaller than I remembered, but I did purchase some Danish havarti (with dill–delicious) and a wedge of French brie, which were fantastic when stuffed in burgers.
Rather, this update is more of a complaint about the customer service from one particular employee that still ticks me off two days later. I was here this past Friday (11/13) with family to shop for a few things. For the most part, the employees at Ashley Marketplace are really nice. The two girls working at the bakery were friendly while my family was buying some creme brulee, as was the gentleman who kindly returned our shopping basket for us. However, the cashier who rang up our total is an exception. She looked pissed off even while we were waiting in line, but we didn't say anything.
While we were checking out, the cashier spoke in a very rude tone while ordering my family to "put out your groceries." What's with the attitude? I have no clue what her name is, but all I remember was that she was working the cashier at 4:45pm on Friday. She might have been in trouble earlier for whatever reason, or she might be a new employee. Regardless, she needs some major customer service training if she is going to continue working here. I'm sure other customers would have instantly reacted if this happened to them, but we decided to just pay and leave.
This place is consistently a life saver when we visit South Orange,NJ.
If Whole Foods and Fresh Market got married and had a beautiful little baby, this would be Ashley Marketplace. It's a smaller store, but with superb attention to detail and incredible customer service. I cooked all of the sides to the Thanksgiving dinner, and stopped here for the sliced roasted in store turkey and also a few pieces of brisket.
The turkey was phenomenal and Craig was just perfect with cutting exactly the amount I needed for 4 people. We also picked up some cupcakes from the bakery display as I simply did not have energy left over for dessert making. The cupcake assortment was vanilla with vanilla buttercream frosting and chocolate with chocolate frosting. These were some gigantic cupcakes. After the food eating extravaganza and watching a few episodes of Chrisley Knows Best, it was cupcake time. Me and my 89 year old mother in law were the only ones indulging in dessert. She had chocolate cupcake and I took a vanilla and we proceeded to devour our cupcakes. We both agreed that these cupcakes were so good. I would go back to Ashley just to get a cupcake and nothing else.
Ashley does have an amazing hot bar everyday, along with a salad and fruit bar. Each section of the store has little items to stumble upon. They also have the largest pomegranates I have seen in any store.
I have never had any complaint with this store, but I know if I did, that they would definitely make it right.
This place was OK. The layout is very convoluted and confusing. Couldn't find anyone on the floor to help me find something. It's the kind of place I'd go to pick a thing or two up if I needed specialty items. They carry regular grocery products but I can't imagine they are cheap there. The fish counter guy was cool, and the Freeman's fish dept there had a fish I wanted that the main Freemans in Maplewood didn't, so…OK. Parking is a bitch.
This place is colorful, has plenty of options for groceries, and also many options for take-out of hot and cold meals. This is definitely an upscale place and I'll be honest, I only went in for a smoothie which I was craving and a quick walk-through. Smoothie was ok, definitely fresh with no sugar added, which I was looking for. I do think the lady forgot my banana in my strawberry-banana smoothie, but what do I know??? Still yummy and got a $1 off coupon by checking in (Thanks yelp!) Coupon is good for every check in until June. Definitely a pricey market, but I think it's up there with a Trader Joe's or Whole Foods in which the "average" person can go in for some select items, fun snacks, or even a meal. I would never buy my entire shopping list worth of items here. Just not realistic. Definitely clean and the staff are friendly. Will go back for a second look!
As one other reviewer mentioned its merely just the same store with a new name. It went from Eden Market to Ashley's but for the most part, remains essentially the same. Not much has changed. There is now a much larger seating area on the South Orange Ave side with many coffee options, although it's over-priced without refills. All in all it's the same selection, which in itself was nothing to write home about and the same high prices. They seem to specialize in the hard to find and off-market brands. It's difficult to find anything 'regular' here, including the staple items such as potato chips, cereals, pastas, etc… And worst of all, their produce is constantly lacking. I'm not sure what supplier they use but its very low-end. Many times I've gone in looking for that item I was short on to make a specific dish and typically their produce is moldy and days past its use by date. The service has improved slightly but for the most part its the same store that's really only good for that one or two odd items you might need, not a full grocery shop.
Some of the best lobster bisque soup that I've had!
