Summary: Great Traditional Malaysia Food. Just ask the server what to order if you're not sure. A little odd to call it a pop-up given that that it's inside another restaurant.
Atmosphere: This is classic no frills Chinatown. Mama's Eatery is clean but not really trying too hard.
Service: I loved our waitress/main person that is there to serve. She is from Penang and can tell you exactly what you should get if you're confused. I always ask the question, "What will I be sad about if I don't get it." She knew the answer and was right.
Food:
Roti: It's always good. slightly different here, so go ahead and get it
Chicken Curry Dry noodles – this is great. Get this and just ask her which noodles go with it best.
Laksa… Same thing.. Get the soup and then ask for the best noodle.
Final note… They care a lot about people having a good experience, so you need only ask what would make one's tummy happiest and you shall receive.
Sharing the dining room with Mama Eatery is a delicious pop up curry restaurant.
Ordered the curry seafood soup noodle $9 with Ho Fun. Unless you're super hungry, the order will be big enough to share. There was ample amounts of fish cakes and imitation crab meat. Even though it looked like a lot of broth, the noodle soaked up most of it. None of the delicious broth was wasted!
Complimentary watermelon slices was a delightful surprise at the end of the meal.
FYI, there are plenty of wall adapters to charge your cellphones for any Pokemon go fans. (There's a pokestop nearby).
Located inside Mama's Eatery, the food and service here was on point! It is a bare restaurant with a family owned flair.
The waiter was so alarmed when we ordered three entrees for two people. With bewildered eyes, he told us it is going to be a lot of food. After assuring him we were fattys who can eat, he placed our order. We came on 3/18, first day they introduced the curry spare ribs ($11) so we had to order it. The spare ribs were fall off the bone delicious and plenty of them for that price! It also came with super crispy chip like potatoes. My favorite dish out of the three was the curry seafood noodle soup with mei fun ($9), very flavorful and plenty of seafood. The curry chicken dry noodle ($7) with ho fun fell a little flat, the extra bowl of curry sauce really saved the dish. The jello that came at the end of the meal was on point! So refreshing after all the curry we consumed.
That's right, we killed the 3 entrees between two people (for under $30). No regrets. I can't wait to come back and try the other items!
Food and service are great! Got the beef curry with pancakes. Very flavorful and filling for a great price! The place was very clean and actually was almost empty when I came ( around 2-3 on a weekend). The waitress we had was helpful in explaining the different dishes and helping us decide what to order. To top it all off, there was some complimentary jello for dessert! (Also Eggloo is right nearby if you want to head somewhere else for ice cream!). Great place for a quick, casual, inexpensive and DELICIOUS meal 🙂 TIP: I was concerned that they might only take cash but they do take card.
4 stars for food, 3 stars for service.
I walked by this place a few times last weekend and was intrigued by the "Curry Pop-Up" sign, so decided to have dinner there. My boyfriend and I never knew that Mama Eatery existed – they serve a variety of diner-esque meals throughout the day (breakfast platters, burgers/wraps/salads, pasta, etc.) – however at the time of this review, the restaurant is also running an Asian Curry Pop-Up.
When we got here around 6:15 PM, it was completely empty. Usually I would take this as a red flag, but by the time we left around 7 PM, it had gotten a little busier. Our waiter was really nice… maybe a little slow and not so intuitive on service, but very friendly. We sat around a few times while the servers were socializing, even though the place was practically empty.
Almost all the dishes were under $10. I ordered the curry chicken, which comes with your choice of Asian pancake (roti) or white rice on the side… I highly recommend getting both as I use the rice to soak up all the curry at the end. My bf ordered the dry chicken curry noodles, which is prepeared using your choice of 2 types of noodles (lo mein, ho fen, or mei fen).
The portion sizes were extremely generous for the prices and both dishes were really flavorful! Definitely comfort food. Usually I like my curry a little more thick (Thai style, perhaps) but the curry here is definitely more soupy consistency.
Credit card accepted – and we got some free jello for dessert, which wasn't half bad. Would come back again and even try some of the non-curry dishes too from Mama Eatery!
Run, don't walk to this hidden gem!! During certain hours of the day, Mama's Eatery turns into one of the best Malaysian restaurants, turning out some amazing curry dishes. I came here on a Saturday afternoon, right when the Curry pop up shop started. The place was almost entirely empty, and were greeted by a lovely waitress from Malaysian that shares some great insight of the menu.
I ordered the asian salad and curry veggie noodle soup. The salad had a nice crunch with a sweet and sour taste. The waitress served it with a side of sirarcha, and it was a great compliment to the salad. On to the noodle soup… this is one of the best dishes I've ever eaten. I was blown away by this soup. The broth is so rich and creamy, I could eat this for every single meal for the rest of my life. The great thing, is you can mix your type of noodle! I thought this was an awesome idea to create more texture!
Highly recommend, and plan to come back ASAP!
Service was great but food was kind of bland.
Came here for a quick dinner with friends around 7:30. There were a couple other parties, but other than that it was pretty empty. Lots of seating and it doesn't feel dirty here.
I got the shredded chicken dry noodle with lo mein. It really just tasted like soy sauce on the noodles topped with shredded chicken. Two of my friends got the curry chicken dry noodle with mei fun. They thought the flavor was pretty bland but the chicken was cooked well. My other friend who got the curry seafood noodle soup enjoyed hers the most out of us, so that seems to be the winning dish.
The waitress/owner was really nice and asked how everything was going. One of our friends came late so we ordered for her. She was nice enough to bring a plate to cover the dish so it'd stay warm.
I was surprised by this amazing pop up joint. I wish I found it sooner. If you like spicy malaysian style curry noodles, then you would love this place. you can choose mix 2 of the 3 types of noodles (mei fun, lo mein, or ho fun). They have curry noodles with seafood, chicken, mixed veggies, take your pick. I loved my curry noodles soup with mixed veggies- it was filled with okra, delicious tofu, tasty spring beans as well as eggplant. I even added on a hard boiled egg that complimented the whole dish perfectly. The soup was spicy and perfect for a cold winter's night. I hope it stays around longer (despite the fact of being a pop up) because it is DELICIOUS with excellent food. They even surprised us with tasty jello treats for dessert. The staff was helpful and explained everything on the menu. They also have a curry beef and curry chicken rice dish if noodle is not your thing. This is one of the top new york cheap eats and definitely a MUST TRY!! I want to come here every night.
