Astro Restaurant

“As far as the food goes, it's pretty run-of-the-mill American eats, but delivered to your table with NYC speed and spot-on "Greasy Spoon" taste.”

“Yeah, I've had Burger Joint and 5 Guys…all right here in the immediate neighborhood, but I always seem to come back to Astro!”

“So, realize you are near Central Park and the prices are very reasonable for Central Park; heck it's reasonable for Las Vegas even – LOL!!!”

  1. It's hard to find affordable places in this part of town. We found the diner. It was crowded so we figured that was a good sign. My wife and I ordered omelettes. Mine was fine. She ordered an egg white omelette with well done home fries. Her eggs were runny and the potatoes were not well done. Simple requests. Not cheap anymore when it isn't a good meal.

  2. It's expensive for what you get. But I guess I can understand given the location. I spent almost $20 for a regular breakfast combo that had hash browns, eggs, and a few pieces of meat, and coffee. The place also felt hot and layout was compact.

The saving grace might be the Greek yogurt, and the wide range of options you can choose from. But other than that, I think it's an overpriced diner that doesn't excel in any way.

  3. Our hotel front desk recommended this diner. When we got there, there was a wait for a table, but we snagged the last 3 seats at the counter.

The service was just average, but the food was awesome as were the portions for the price. I got the corned beef hash with eggs over medium with rye toast. Everything was cooked properly and very flavorful.

  4. I come here for breakfast every time I stay in midtown…

Cheap, easy, casual, good food, great coffee… Don't hate, appreciate!

  5. This diner was recommended by our hotel and they done good! It had a wait the whole time we were there but we took stools at the bar and bypassed the wait.

No kids menu, but the daughter was captivated by the blueberry muffins they had in baskets on the counter, so she ordered that and sausage. The muffin was incredible. Moist and flavorful, with a pocket of blueberry in the middle. The sausage links were the huge true sausage links, not your regular small breakfast ones. They were great – mild and just the right amount of fat.

I had bacon, eggs, potatoes and rye bread. The bacon was perfectly done – not overdone at all. Huge chunks of potatoes, perfectly seasoned.

Wish this diner was in my neighborhood

  6. Food was good… Probably 4 star or more. I had the Canadian bacon bison burger. It's $3 more to get lettuce and tomato with it and fries… But it's only 8.95 so it's not a big deal on cost.

Biggest issue is the intimate atmosphere and craziness going on. You can zone it out but it's a bit much for me being a wee bit of a closterphobic … Service was good when they came. Never really checked on us. Except to clean up the plates – and that is when we got our water refilled haha

    Still waiting on check

  7. Ah, don't be fooled by the location of the many people piled into this diner.

It took about 10 minutes for my coworker & I to be seated. That's not bad.

Typical diner menu – sandwiches, salads, entrees, wraps, etc. however, since this is a prime area, the prices were ridiculous!! Keep in mind this is still a diner. With diner food.

I ordered the Reuben wrap. It came with fries, coleslaw & a pickles (not bad). The wrap was disappointing. The wrap itself was complete mush – wet & mushy.

There was a ton of hot sauerkraut & some pastrami & cheese inside. I had to use a fork & knife because the pastrami was so tough! I didn't taste any thousand island dressing at all.

    Service was ok, I guess.

This place is average if not below average & the prices were shocking to me since it's still just a diner.

  8. Astro is one of those places that is just great! Casual friendly service. Big menu with lots of choices and the food comes out quickly. I have eaten here on and off for ten years – and it just feels so familiar. It's great to hear the servers chatter in Greek to each other and to see the very talented short order chef listen to orders verbally and then cook with lightning speed! Food is very good and cooked just as you asked for it.
