Since this Au Bon Pain is located in the heart of NYC's poop chute, also known as Port Authority, I was skeptical that it would be any good. My fiance couldn't stop talking about how great one of their soups is (at another location), so I decided to just give it a go.
I'm glad I did!
Even at the height of lunch rush, I was able to get in, get my soup, and get out in just a few minutes. In fact, the only thing really holding me up was my indecision over which soup to go with! Definitely try out the pumpkin. It ROCKS. Perfectly spiced. I wanted to try the butternut squash with apple soup that my fiance mentioned, but so far they haven't had it when I've been there.
Top of the soup with a fresh baguette and an ice cold lemonade, and you've got a perfect lunch for a cool fall day! Or persistant warm late summer day…
I almost feel bad giving his place less than three stars. I enjoy Au Bon Pain's food a lot. Their coffee is excellent (better than the overrated Dean & Deluca across the street), their soups are yummy and the baked goods have never let me down. The staff at this branch is hard working and friendly. They keep the place clean as they can and the baked goods are constantly being refreshed (a testament to the high traffic flow).
So what's the problem? Well…it's not so much the store itself as its location. Unfortunately, being located in Port Authority Bus Terminal, there are a lot of less than savory elements hanging out in the general area and they inevitably meander into the rather large seating area of this branch. Among the highlights?
1. A guy with a hoodie and sunglasses standing in the corner by the baked goods staring at my girlfriend and myself…for a half hour straight.
2. An old lady who suddenly appeared behind me, crying yelling at me about how I don't understand her and don't owe her anything.
3. One guy who (I swear) drank at least half a container of coffee by standing there with a cup, refilling it, drinking it down, refilling etc. over the course of about a half hour.
My suggestion would be if you're going to visit this one, expect some of the rougher side of New York City to appear or just grab your stuff to go.
