I love this place so hard. Seriously.
I crave their house salad – which is silly, I know, but the vinegary dressing and the parmesan cheese on the table and the fresh-tasting and not-overly-dressed vegetables…. I don't know what it is, but I crave it.
I've never had a bad meal here. And, even better, I've never had a problem here getting exactly what I wanted. Example? I had dinner here with the family for the first time in about two years (I've been out of town for a while..) and when it came time to order, I mentioned to the waiter that a few years back they'd had a special – baked ziti with eggplant.
Immediately his response was, "You want that? Sure – we can whip it up for ya."
And my baked ziti with eggplant was exactly the same at it was two years ago.
There's something incredibly comforting about a family Italian place that just doesn't change. The food is consistently enjoyable, the staff is consistently friendly, and the prices consistently low. The atmosphere is lovely.
It's a bit out of the way, and I probably wouldn't say it's worth a trek if, say, you're visiting from out of town and staying in Manhattan or anything. But if you can drive there easily and are looking for a solid, comforting meal? This is your place.
Delicious, homestyle Italian food in a warm, Italian family-style atmosphere.
I had the most ridiculous, heavy meal and enjoyed every single bite of it. I started the meal with cream of potato soup (I know, a tad weird at an Italian restaurant), and it was thick and flavorful. I was scraping the bottom of the bowl because I never wanted the soup to end. For the main dish I had some penne alla vodka with chicken. They sauce was vodka-y and made with some mozzarella cheese. I enjoyed that twist on this traditional dish. I wish I had a bite of my boyfriend's chicken parmesan but he inhaled it before I had a chance. Dessert was the low point. We each had the white parisienne, which was raspberry sorbet covered in vanilla ice cream dipped in white chocolate. The sorbet and white chocolate were great, but the ice cream in between was most of the dish and mostly tasteless.
Our waiters were attentive and fast. They were also on the talkative side, which fine because it fit into the Italian family atmosphere. When my penne was packed up for home (I could only eat half of it, that is how heavy and filling it was), the waiter threw in a container of tomato sauce so that I could reheat the meal and thin out the sauce since it usually congeals a bit when it gets cold. That was a nice touch, and I appreciated it when I ate the meal the other day.
This restaurant is closer to my bf's hood but I'll definitely come back with him.
