Come here a few times, love this place!
The platters are really worth it, the platter for two can feed three people!
I think i've been here 4 or 5 times now, and every time service is amazing, and sushi is fresh and delicious.
will definitely be coming back here and would recommend to others!
Ordered Ava Sushi for delivery on a Sunday night. I got three rolls for under $20, including tip. Glad to say I've found my neighborhood sushi joint!
I ordered the salmon avocado, sweet potato and spicy tuna roll with crunch. The sweet potato roll was still warm when it got to me, which is great because sometimes the tempura gets soggy en route. I liked that the inside out rolls (fish on inside, wrapped with seaweed then rice on outside) were well proportioned — a lot of fish and thin layer of rice.
Got a delivery order with grilled octopus and self-selected sashimi (tuna and fluke). Everything was freshly prepared and wrapped well. I was even surprised to find out some romaine salad beneath my octopus! The teriyaki sauce had a slight touch of sweet and sour flavor that I liked a lot!
Would return for more orders or drop by. Good stuff!
Let's throw a Real Time Lunch Review at this under-reviewed joint!
I ordered up the following:
Ava Special Roll: Shrimp mango topped with sliced avocado and blue crab with spicy mayo and eel sauce.
Out of Control Roll: Yellowtail, tuna and avocado rolled up with tuna, salmon, eel and crunch, topped with scallion and eel sauce.
Canadian Roll: Shrimp tempura, spicy snow crab, bacon, cucumber and spicy mayo rolled in a sesame crepe.
Order confirmed at 1pm. ETA is by 2pm. They're six avenues away from my office.
Arrived about 35 minutes later. All the rolls were visually appealing. And they included a separate pair of chopsticks with separate soy sauce container for each roll, and they provided low sodium soy sauce. Off to a damned fine start!
Out of Control Roll: 8 hearty pieces. The fish tasted fresh and was the star, and the other ingredients simply complimented it, opposed to overpowering it. It didn't wow me, but it was a solid roll, with a really healthy amount of fish to match the price tag. Though way too heavy on the crunch.
Canadian Roll: 5 pieces. So a bit chintzy for the price tag. Didn't look visually appealing. Decent flavor. Again, hearty amount of innards. Though the stars are the bacon and spicy sauce. I mean, fun roll. Possibly worth it, if you have the cash. But do not try it with the ginger. No bueno!
Ava Special Roll: Definitely the prettiest of them all. Well-balanced, in that the mango, while powerful and present, doesn't completely kill everything else. Nice tooth to the shrimp. Creamy avocado. Very fresh ingredient. Nice "dessert" roll 🙂
I'm a fan! Only an A-ok sushi joint. But worth giving a try!
Ugh, I wish I could say Ava gets a full 3-star rating, but sadly it's more of a 2.75. For those of you who know me, I'm ADDICTED to sushi pizza. So addicted that I even made a list of every restaurant within a mile of my apartment that has it on the menu. Now I'm in a new apartment with a new list (because I'm nuts like that), and Ava was at the top of it.
For dinner I ordered the spicy tuna pizza and the tuna tartare (with no avocado). Let me begin with the pizza. It was decent, not good, not bad, but mediocre. The sauces were fine, the fish was fine, the pancake itself was incredibly dough-y? I'm still confused about it. Usually these pizzas come on a crispier pancake but this one wasn't. It was almost as if it were undercooked or something. I mean, thank you Ava for sparing me some artery clogging by not deep frying it but it was missing the UMPH factor that would've brought a sushi pizza experience that was a 5 to at least a 6.7. The tartare was very fresh tasting but so blah. The whole thing was probably the size of a golf ball and I felt totally gipped! The menu also said there would be mango in it and there were TWO measly pieces of fruit that I could find. Sad.
On the bright side…I placed an order on seamless and they were very speedy. Also, the spicy chili sauce that came on the side with the tartare was great. I ended up pouring it over everything I ordered to give it all some flavor. If you're interested in ordering special rolls, they're decently priced although I didn't try any.
Would I come back to Ava? No, there are too many nearby places that are much better.
