  1. This itsy bitsy greek spot is located in West Hempstead and I must say is rolling out the best greek dishes on Long Island. This is not a place I would try and sit down and eat at. They have counter style seating; you're better off placing an order and picking up (delivery service is available)
Here's some of the things I've tried and really enjoyed. I ordered the Gyro which had very tender lamb, well seasoned with yummy tzatziki sauce along the bottom on top of the pita bread. I truly believe they have the best gyro I've ever had. Goes well with their Greek Fries which come with melted feta on top and seasoned with oregano, delicious! A side of their Lemon Potatoes also goes very well with a gyro. You really can't go wrong with either. Their prices are a little on the high end but I'll pay a little more for a good meal. The parking situation isn't the greatest since they don't have their own parking lot so you'll have to park on Hempstead Ave. The Dunkin Donuts lot is for customers only and a tow away zone.

P.S. They forgot my Diet Coke but I'm still giving them 5 stars!

  2. I have been in Avli The Little Greek Kitchen 3 times now. I get the feeling a few young folks decided to open this place for fun. Well, the pleasure is all mine.

I snuck in here one day with a hankering for a little baklava, By my third visit I was trying the Pork Souvlaki and my son was digging into the buffalo wings appetizer. That's right, buffalo wings at a Greek joint!.

The wings had this crazy sauce that we could only describe a 'velvety'. It had good spice, nice sweetness, a little heat, but mostly it was velvety smooth and downright delicious. The meat was super tender and all in all as good as we have had at legit wing joints.

The Pork Souvlaki has loads of meaty pork chunks inside a smoky pita wrap with loads of fresh veggies and a really tangy, tasty tzatziki sauce. There was nice herbaciousness to the pork which suggested a nice marinade before grilling.

So all in all the food was very good. But that doesn't explain the 5-star rating. One way to get a 5-star rating is to have something on the menu that simply is just better than you can get anywhere else. And that's what Avli has with their baklava.

The baklava serving is huge; the size of an apple turnover. They take it into the back, and they warm it up with a ample drizzling of greek honey and they sprinkle some cinnamon on the plate. When it comes back out, the aroma is intoxicating. You tear into it with a knife and fork. The sheets of pastry and the nuts swim around in the pool of honey and cinnamon, and when I tell you its a little bit of heaven, it's the reason I've been in there three times. The flavor is KILLER!

If one dish is reason enough to visit a restaurant, the baklava is good enough reason to visit  Avli. The kids working there are as nice as they can be, and they take pride in what they do there. But the baklava. Man oh man.

  3. I primarily get delivery from this place and they are always right on target. We usually get the same items – spinach pie, chicken souvlaki, side of grilled vegetables and a Domatosalada.

Oh, a note about the salad, almost every Greek place I've gone to has the salad of sliced tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, olives, feta cheese & oregano listed as Horiatiki, but not here. We ordered that once and was disappointed that it came with lettuce. You need to order the Domatosalada to get the right salad.

We've had the soups and both are good – my wife didn't like the oregano in the lentil soup, but I liked it very much. The Avgolemono soup is very good as well.

The sides of lemon potatoes, fries and onion rings (which contain actually whole onions) are all good.

I will say I am disappointed they don't offer Taramasalata which is one of my favorite pikilia, but no matter. Everything they do offer is nicely seasoned and prepared very well.

We tried the Galaktoboriko on occasion, but its not my favorite. Their version is decent if you are really in the mood for it.

The word "little" in the name of the place is no exaggeration at this location. There is very little seating so either order take out or delivery.

  4. The gyros here are some delicious. I usually get then from one of those carts on the side one so this find was amazing.

Space: inside has a counter that goes along the 3 walls and can comfortably seat maybe 8 adults. The seats are high bar stools.

The food: on this visit I ordered the combo gyro.
I had lamb, falafel, lettuce, tomato, tahini, red onion.  Basically if they offered it is wanted it in my sandwich. My fiancé ordered the chicken gyro. We spilt a side order of Greek fries( French fries, feta cheese, olive oil ). Very delicious. With every bite you can taste all the flavors and get a piece of everything. Unlike some places you go and get to the bottom and it's just pita, not here. Once I finished my gyro I could barely eat the fries.

The food was so delightful it put me in mini thanksgiving induced nap.

  5. I've ordered from here several times and so has my family. I have ordered the chicken souvlaki sandwich with feta and tziki sauce (I'm probably butchering the words, please forgive me), anyway it was delicious. It had big chunks of chicken seasoned perfectly. The hummus tasted good, it was plain but tasted fresh. The spinach pie is delicious. I also order the mixed salad which comes with mixed greens, goat cheese, onions, some other veggies and your choice of meat (I either get chicken or falafel). It also comes with a raspberry vinaigrette, and that tastes so yummy!

We ordered a burger once and it was not cooked the way we had asked. It was cooked well and we wanted medium.

Overall I do like this place.
I will definitely be ordering more often.

  6. 6:55pm on a Saturday night. Call my wife's first option for dinner but their closed (already?!?). Move on to the next one – gyros from our local excellent place. How are they closed so early too? Then I remember this offshoot of Avli from Bayside. I call up and they're still open and very helpful on the telephone.

We order up some gyros, falafel and their skirt steak on pita. All three were a big hit. The gyro meat was excellent. Tasty and juicy just as it should be. The skirt steak sandwich was also fantastic. I didn't try the falafel, but my daughter was happy with it.

I'm glad we had to try plan c. We will definitely return to this little offshoot of one of our favorite Greek restaurants.

  7. I frequently order here for lunch when I'm at work since it's a block away. My whole office loves this place. Everything you order here is delicious and fresh. They have the best French fries! Also, always ask for their specials if you are calling ahead. Their Halloumi sandwich with eggplant spread is amazing and well as the chipotle chicken sandwich. The Greek salad and gyros are a must. Their pulled pork burrito with white sauce is delicious as well.

  8. So good! The dining area is really tiny, so you're probably better off taking it to go, or ordering from there. The food is always on point, everything I've tried is really good. Staff is really awesome too.
