  1. We had a memorable lunch. The owner welcomed us. We were immediately seated.

The deluxe Chirashi was incredibly fresh, flavorful, and reasonably priced.

The decor was minimalist and pristine.

I can't wait to come back!

  2. The area around the Hartsdale train station has alot of restaurants but most are average if you ask me. You got the Indian place that serves reheated dishes, the mediocre pizzeria with subpar entrees and salads, the generic and boring Mexican place, and the juice bar with the broken juicer (yep, it's true). Until today, it seemed that Starbucks was my best lunch option. How the hell is that possible?

Today I stumbled across Azuma. Even though I must have passed it a million times I never even noticed the place.  Maybe its because its situatied somewhat anonymously between an art gallery and credit union, or perhaps its the dark sign in black and gold? Regardless, it never registered as a place to try.

As for the food, the sushi was dynamite! The tuna was buttery smooth, and they even have fish direct from Japan which was stellar. Preparation and presentation was top notch. Very solid skills.

I also want to mention the excellent atmosphere. This place seems like its a bit old school, the kind of spot where you could go for a intimate date or even a business lunch and feel like you're in your own world. Or if you prefer, sit right at the bar and watch the guys do their stuff.

I loved Azuma and look forward to checking out some more of their sushi in the future.

  3. The menu is relatively small but sufficient. Dinner options appear to include soup or salad, and we were each served an amuse bouche (sliced cucumber with fish) and a small bowl of edamame, which was a nice surprise. My sushi entree — 7 pcs of sushi and a tuna roll — was fresh and filling. Our mugs of hot green tea were kept full.

  4. Azuma? More like AMAZING! This is a place where you go back to the root of sushi and get yourself some very authentic sushi. There is juuust the right amount of wasabi in the sushi pieces to clear your nose, but not to water your eyes. All pieces are perfectly sized. Rice well seasoned, rolls well packed.
Come here to go back to basics and love it. I am definitely coming back, and next time I'll remember to make a reservation.
Note: VERY small place that is not easily notice-able from the street.

  5. "Hartsdale? We might as well book a flight to Japan," I joked.

S and I drove up the Bronx River Parkway on a Saturday afternoon and was pleasantly surprised. I found a meter in front of the restaurant and unfortunately, had to feed the meter with quarters until 8 PM.

My friends warned us to come early because it is a small restaurant and gets busy quickly. Upon entering, I was greeted by an elderly Japanese man in a suit. Tony, the proprietor greeted us and sat us down.

For a party of 5, we decided to order an assortment of sushi and sashimi. While sipping sake, I asked for the name of one of the sushi pieces (I never had before).

"Suzuki," answered Tony, as he motioned the handbars of a motorcycle… The man has jokes.

The soft shell crab appetizer was so delicious… We ordered a second one (after we devoured the sushi and sashimi assortment). The service was attentive. The waitresses came often, filling our water glasses and retrieving sake and beer.

The toro pieces did not give me chills (fatty tuna is my favorite) but I was begging for more of: suzuki, yellowjack and roe nigiri. Woah, woah. Fish eggs? Yes (see photos).

Overall, Azuma is a quaint, yet endearing Japanese restaurant. I did pay a premium for sushi and sashimi, but the fish was fresh and handled with great care (no sloppy fish or disproportionate fish-to-rice ratios here).

Is Azuma better or on par with my favorites, Sushi Seki and Sushi Yasuda? No, but it's close. Would I return? Yes I would.

  6. Now I know why this place is the best sushi restaurant in Westchester County.

The omakase is such a great deal. In the city you are bound to pay over $100 for an omakase sushi dinner; here it's like $40 for the most expensive one. SAY WHAT? And the sushi is legit. They have your standards, but then they have their special sushi pieces, so it sorta reminds me of Sushi of Gari when they add a little bit of flair to the sushi.

Complimentary hot green tea too, and they give you a hot towel right when you sit down. The place is small, and it does seem to get busy quite quickly especially during prime time. Do yourself a favor and splurge on the Omakase.

  7. I would agree with the other reviewers that Azuma probably has the best sushi in Westchester.  They are quite expensive with sushi-bar service at $40 a person minimum or a table side medium size sushi platter for 2 at $65.  However, the sushi is very fresh and tasty and if you're hankering for it and don't feel like waiting until you're in the city then go for it.

My only other comment is the communication problems with the staff who had a hard time trying to explain their pricing/minimum.  When I was there one couple when it was finally explained to them ordered some edamame and left.  After my meal I wish that I had left as well since I spent $80 for me and my wife and certainly wasn't wowed.  Then again I used to live on Thompson Street, 3 doors down from Tomoe so perhaps I'm spoiled for great sushi at reasonable prices.
