The rating is solely for the food. It is delicious, seasoned to my liking and oh so flavorful. Just don't expect to receive friendly service. The cashier was very kurt, but not rude. He was more on the dismissive type which I didn't pay any mind too. There are plenty of tables and even a pitcher of water in each table, but I didn't trust to drink from it. It's quite thoughtful to have water in each table, but personally I don't know how long it has been there or who has touched it and I just wouldn't trust to drink it. Most of the food were labeled, but the chicken I got wasn't. It was, however, delicious and I hope that they will have it again. It was spicy, tender, and juicy. Also, the rice and beans were delish.
I do have to add that the containers were too high for me. It was located on the top shelf and I had a difficult time grabbing one of the to go containers. I am 5'1 and I had to ask someone to get me one. Also, the space is a bit cramp. It is hard to get around and the space should really be for just 1 person at a time each lane.
I will be back for the food!
I was heading down the Villages and needed something to eat, So Yelp to the rescue. How could I not give this a try after reading all the reviews…
The place is certainly nothing to look at, BUT that's not why you go to B&Bs. You go here to get some really tasty African/South American (soul) foods. As much, or as little as you want, you pay by the weight of the food you've stuffed into your container. Oh, did I mention, it's cheap too!!
Yes, there's wonderful Jerked Chicken, plenty of beef, lamb and more chicken, there's a range of rice dishes, pastas, vegetables and salads.
If you are nearby, do it.. The place never closes.
Come in, get the food into a plate or container, pay for it and then find a seat. Some tables have a pitcher of water on them.
FYI; There's a single bathroom available in the back.
Fed the bf who has a crazy appetite + me, for $26. The run rate of the buffet is $7.99/lb. Whole fish is $10. I really wanted to get the lamb shank, but it was nowhere to be found around early dinner time. I did notice a lot if rice options and chicken variety. The bf and I tried a number of them, but i have to say I was only impressed by the okra sauce (there're chunks of meat)and broken rice. The jerk chickens flavor and spice is heaped onto the skin, and the sauce wasn't what I expected. Many of the dishes are kind of salty and oily. Nothing is mind-blowing, but nothing was bad.
The place has a casual, no frills vibe with the right price point for filing home style cooking.
Three stars for the food and an extra star for decent cheap dinner for 2 under $30.
Had this place bookmarked for nearly two years before I stumbled by one Saturday afternoon. That's a feat, btw – that a bookmark lasted that long and the business was still open.
Great place to get some cheap, good-old down home cooking. Think all the meats, veggies, and spaghetti you desire. Wings. Plantains. Greens. Rice. No one will blink when you come in, so take a plate and pick what you want from the buffet. You pay based on weight in the back of the restaurant.
Definitely a spot frequented by a regular crowd – agree with Yan that there were lots of cab drivers and people from Africa/diaspora.
Tried this place today.
Verdict: coming back for the jerk chicken!
No fuss kinda place. Manager or owner aka some guy let me try one item which was nice. Lot of these items look unidentifiable and while most have signs some don't. I tried some stewed okra sauce thingie which was okay, and some… I'm not sure, potato leaf? Which was definitely not for me. That chicken tho was solid. I also only spent $7.
I'll be back for the chicken real soon though. Good green spicy sauce too available.
Flavorful. Delicious. Best of all, it's a great cheap, on-the-go spot for lunch or dinner. I'm not an expert on West African by any means but whatever it is, B&B made it flavorful. I hope I'm not offending anyone but it reminds me of Caribbean or Indian food, not the creamy type but the curry goat/vindaloo type. I wanted to dab a little here and there until I saw the whole lamb shank for only $7!!! Even though the lamb shank weighed in at 1.3lbs when he put in on the scale to cover it, they only charge a flat rate of $7. The lamb was tender, fall off the bone, delicious. Such a steal! I also saw whole fried fish, which looked like either tilapia or porgy for a flat rate of $10. I will definitely come back again next time to try the goat curry, jerk chicken (looked heavily spiced, just the way I like it!), and pilau.
When you see all the local people crowded up in one spot, you know the food has to be good. That might just be a Brooklynite trick, but the buffet here is completely halal and weighs in by the pound. Really affordable, quality food that is authentic and rich in flavor. I paid around $7 for a coconut water and a big plate of food. They have rice, lentils, stews, whole fish, legs of lamb, chicken, etc. Also a vast selection of salads (my favorite) and veggies. When I'm in the area again I'll be sure to pass by here.
Been here a few times over the years. Don't let it is nondescript appearance fool you. This is actually a unique self service (by the pound) buffet selling hearty African and Caribbean food. Delicious home cooked food with a bit of spice and with such a large variety too. Some of the things they serve here include the following: jerk chicken, okra curry, lamb curry, plantains, jollof rice, lamb shank, and much more. They even carry hard to find Caribbean sodas.
