I came here for lunch today with a co-worker.
I got the soup of the day (split pea) and the half rib with rice and beans.
My colleague got the grilled sirloin with rice and Portuguese fries,
I liked the free olives. They were plump and flavorful. My soup was very runny and came with noodles. Think of campbell's chicken noodle soup noodles with split pea on top. It was different for split pea soup but still OK. My soup also came with bread and butter. I wish the soup was the thicker.
My rib entree was very good. I think everything is good besides the chicken. I can imagine the chicken to be very dry. The ribs were just seasoned with salt and pepper. These ribs were not the the fall off the bone tender type ribs. They were meat that gets stuck in between your teeth.
The sirloin looked good. He also got a side of eggs to go over his rice. I will try that or the piccdihno next time. Sorry I can't spell Portuguese and the menu is over at the break room and too far for my reach to find the spelling. His fries were fresh but oil logged so they were not crispy.
I will come back here for sure and with floss.
When you enter, it looks like a take out joint but through another set of doors, you will find a small, simple dining area.
Thankfully, it is BYOB so bring some delicious beers or nice red wine to go with all the meat you're about to have!
First, they give you warm bread plus a dish of olives. Great way to start a meal!
The whole order of 1/2 Chicken and 1/2 BBQ ribs for $15 is enough for two people to share! What a great price. The ribs were delicious, a little salty, and certain parts a little tough to chew. However, still very good. The chicken was a little dry but also still good especially with some hot sauce.
It comes with two sides and the rice was a huge, generous portion.
Then for dessert, I got the flan, which was amazing. Some of the best I've had. To wash it down, I got an espresso and it was great!
Also, amazing service. The staff are super friendly and attentive.
I'd definitely return and highly recommend it to anyone.
I only give it three stars for the interior. The food…easily a 4 to maybe 5 stars. I had read other reviews and they were excellent, so I tried it. I found the restaurant to be more of a take-out kind of place. I ordered the Portuguese BBQ spare ribs with yellow rice and beans. Absolutely delicious. My only mistake…ordering the whole plate rather than the 1/2 plate. That huge serving would have been enough to feed a small family.
Was in the area picking up soccer uniforms from Kix n' Sticks and this place had a very good review. Nice little town and there's ample parking around.
There's 2 areas – a counter with a couple of tables and a dining room on the other side. They've got the heaviest, noisiest chairs, the sound it makes when you move it is really loud.
Bread and olives were served, the bread was fresh and warm, delicious. Anyway – the food: my daughter was really looking forward to her favorite Skirt steak, but they were out, so she settled for top sirloin with rice and french fries. The fries were really crispy – very good. My wife and I shared the full plate of ribs. The barbecue is good, but not on a par with Brasilia. Meat is okay, but not tender enough. It's not overly salted like in other places.
BYO, and the prices are very good.
A vegan writing a review of a Portuguese place. Haha.
I'm writing a review for my parent's perspective really:
Typical little Portuguese spot, we got frango. The yellow rice was alright, the chicken was a big portion, but the fries were a little odd? I'm not sure how they cooked them but they seemed to be chunky or crispy? It was weird. Got a salad and some rolls.
A decent place, not the best frango in the area but it'll do.
I have always been a fan of eating Portuguese Food. Especially Frango!
I knew I was going be a fan of this place when the waitress started with free OLIVES- and then she came back with 5 warm small Portuguese rolls! my tummy was soo happy! I can eat olives and fresh bread ALL day =)
We ordered the traditional combo (chicken and ribs) with salad and a chicken yucca soup! All was great!
Chicken breast – not dry at all
Ribs- very tasty – doesn't fall off the bone ( for those who care to know )
Yellow rice – traditional European style – good
Soup – hearty, flavorsome- I would substitute this over chicken noodle soup
FRIES ( very crispy ) – I left pondering …." what made the fries sooo cripsy"? =/
I am glad I gave this place a try, will come here again!
I've dined here several times but mostly do carry-out. They have solid Portguese BBQ and it has to be my favorite in the area. I'm pretty picky with Portguese BBQ since my family has been loyal to Elm Street BBQ in Newark for over 10 years. It's the perfect spot for a fast and pretty healthy meal especially when you're not in the mood to cook.
If you dine-in, just go through the doors on the right when you come in and you can pretty much choose where you want to sit. They'll serve you warm bread with butter and olives in olive oil to start. Their service is prompt and to the point. I also believe they're BYOB here since I've seen some customers bring wine (not quite certain so just make sure w them)
I've had ribs, chicken, chicken picadinho, pork picadinho, fried calamari, shrimp in garlic sauce, and salmon in the past along with rice, beans and fries. I've also been able to try their desserts like the flan. My go-to dishes are usually the ribs and chicken picadinho.. You can't go wrong. Even 1/2 order portions are pretty big and can be shared.
We love Portuguese food and enjoy trying various Union County spots. We give the edge to the Backyard over Clark BBQ. Only thing missing is Sangria. No alcohol is served.
Never had an off meal here. The ribs, both beef and pork are outrageously good. Skirt steak was cooked rare as requested. The sides can feed an army and are delicious. Good rolls. My wife loves the BBQ chicken.
Friendly service, convenient. A great place to try if you find yourself in the area.
