My family planned to go here for my birthday dinner last night. They looked up the menu, looked at Yelp reviews, etc. Everything came back sounding great.
We walked into this place around 7 PM, and the decor was lovely! The place was pretty large, and the food on everyone's plates looked amazing.
I hadn't eaten all say, so I was practically drooling at the menu. They had so many things! And a lot of vegetarian options, for my veggie friends.
We started off with red wine. They came out with bread, but we replaced it with pita because my sister asked. That was nice.
I didn't like the red wine, it tasted watered down.
I don't eat red meat, but since it was my birthday, I decided to order lamb! The order said leg of lamb with lemon potatoes. I also ordered a big salad and a large chunk of feta cheese.
The lamb came out and it was drowning in a sauce that the menu didn't mention that it came with. Luckily, the sauce was good, so I ate it. The lamb was soft and tasty. The lemon potatoes, however, were only 3 tiny potatoes! And they were a bit burnt. And not very lemon-y. Being a HUGE potato fan, I ordered a side of lemon potatoes (I think it was 5 bucks), expecting a big portion, and it was another 3! I was in shock. TINY portion!
The salad was okay, but how can you mess up a salad?
My sister ordered a spinach pie, and she didn't like it, and neither did I. The phyllo tasted weird, and it tasted more like a burnt cake with no cheese and just very little mushy spinach. She also ordered fried zucchini and wasn't crazy about that.
I'm not saying this place was bad, I just wasn't impressed. The reviews and ambience gave me extremely high expectations for this place, and I was let down.
But my belly was full, and the meal was free (my family paid, it was my birthday), so I was happy enough!
They also give you free dessert. I don't like Greek dessert (shame on me), so I didn't eat it, but yeah.
So we just moved into the neighborhood last month, and I had yet to try a Greek resturant, so on my walk back to my apartment I kept passing Bahari and finally decided that tonight I would pull the trigger. The restaurant is way bigger on the inside then you'd think from the outside. A narrow path leads to a large dinning area in the back of the restaurant.
A buddy of mine raves about grilled octopus and after reading some favorable reviews for it at this place I gave it a try and I have never been happier to try something new. So flavorful and tender. It's listed as an appetizer but my friend and I would have gladly have ate a larger portion as a main course. I cannot recommend this dish enough.
I ordered the biftekia, which is spiced ground beef patties with tzatziki sauce. The patties were delicious and juicy and the tzatziki sauce was very flavorful and made for a great flavor pairing with the spices of the beef.
The meal ended with a lovely little complementary dessert. The staff was very attentive, even when the restaurant quickly went from lightly populated to packed. A great meal experience and I look very much to coming again.
This is my top choice of greek food whenever someone visits me in Astoria. Friendly service, delicious food, reasonable prices, and you can make a reservation!
Grilled Octopus is a MUST. So perfectly grilled every time.
The vegetables look mushy but they are soo yummy
And you can't go wrong w the classic greek salad
The atmosphere is great because you feel like you're eating in a greek family's living room. The living room is well decorated and you're treated like family.
Actually I don't know how an authentic greek food taste like. All I know is this restaurant serves a delicious food! I've been here a couple of times & sometimes order a delivery. I aways get the okra, chicken & fish. Everything taste excellent! The service is great! Servers are attentive. I highly recommend this place!
It has been over a year since I've had Greek food..partially because it is usually just me and my fiance and a place like this warrants a few other mouths just so we can try different dishes, and partially because well, we wanted to keep that memory of the delicious food we had when we were in Santorini and Athens. Well, this place sure surprised us! The restaurant is fairly large – you would not expect it when you walked in, but they have 2 dining rooms. Service was wonderful. My fiancee picked a bottle of white wine for us that was refreshing, light, some pear flavors and mildly sweet.
– Krya Pikilia which is an assortment of the traditional Greek spreads (taramosalata, tzatziki, skordalia, melintzanosalata, tyrokafteri) – all were delicious paired with the bread.
– Kalamarakia Scharas (grilled marinated squid) & Oktapodi Scharas (charcoal grilled octopus sprinkled with virgin olive oil, vinegar, and oregano) – both were equally delicious, especially the grilled bits of the tentacles on the 2nd dish. So yummy, so flavorful!
– Spanakopita (spinach pie with scallions, feta cheese and freshly-baked phyllo dough): I was not a fan of. It was lukewarm, and seemed like it sat there for a long time. I do not recommend this at all.
– Loup de mer, Branzini (whole Mediterranean stripe bass): was absolutely delicious. Very flavorful, no sauce needed. You can't go wrong with this. Not a terribly large fish, but I was able to split it 6 ways since we had so many other dishes to split. You can ask them to debone it!
– Kotopoulo Souvlaki (marinated chicken breast cubes on a skewer); mixed with some green and red peppers and onion. They are much thicker cuts than what you would get on the street, and it is 1 large skewer per plate. Nothing of note here. Decent, but it did not wow me in terms of flavor.
– Mousakas (layers of eggplant, potatoes, ground beef, topped with béchamel sauce): I had been craving for this for awhile and it was only alright. I was slightly disappointed that it wasn't as hot as a casserole should be or that the flavors and the sauce did not wow me like I remembered it to be.
– Gemista me Kima (2 large green peppers stuffed with tomatoes, rice, ground beef and herbs): You can't go wrong with a simple dish like this
Sides: rice pilaf, okra and roasted lemon potatoes. Okra was a little on the mushier side, probably cooked a little too long in the oven, but nonetheless still very good. The potatoes were not saturated with lemon flavor, just a hint so it was perfect for me.
We were so full, we could not possibly order dessert on top of it, but they gave each of us a small square piece of a classic semolina pudding/cake. It was light and not too sweet. I haven't had one before, but this was pretty addicting!
All in all, the meal was pretty good and the price was not bad at all considering we also had a bottle of wine. With tax and tip, it came out to roughly $33 per person. Next time I am back, I am bringing my family!
Came here with my husband and his friends. The service is great, attentive and friendly. The food is fresh, delicious and large portions. The grilled octopus is so fresh and refreshing that we put in another order to go. The grilled salmon was delicious and huge that I had to take it home to finish. There was so much food that comes with the entrees. My kids love the lima beans that comes with the entrees. The mousaka is delicious and ohhh ssooo good.
Just typing this is making it mouthwatering for me to eat. Were heading back there with empty stomach.
I enjoy this greek restaurant. I love the decor and the squid and the fish dishes – I'll take the red snapper and sea bass again please. The salad portions here are huge.
Went here for lunch with my coworker's. We were seated in the back room, which was extremely cute with all the plants and the brick wall.
To be frank, I don't even know what I ate that afternoon; our boss ordered three bottles of wine for us so I was quite sleepy by the end of the meal.
I do remember that everything was served family-style and it was delicious. There was Greek Salad, Fried Calamari, Grilled Octopus, Lemon Potatoes, Sausages, and Fried Zucchini.
Service was slow, but that was probably the server wanted to give all of us some privacy. Also, although the food was excellent, it was a heavy lunch with a lot of either fried food or too much olive oil… Might want to come again to try something else
