Yeah, sometimes these guys have logistical problems, but at the end of the day, they are good guys with very good food. Stopped in today and the second counter person was prompt in asking me what I wanted, while someone else was in front of me ordering. He threw in an extra bialy for my small order of 3 bagels…I like that. Good customer service. Out the door in under 5 mins. Thanks.
I'm in Bay Ridge twice a week now at lunch time (or slightly after) and I've sampled the wares at Bake Ridge (now, SOMEONE was thinking hard for that name!) a couple of times.
Always on hand: wide selection of paninis, wraps, full-blown sandwiches and tons of bagels. Salads with dressing on the side and prepared foods are also available.
My lunches so far: the first time I had an eggplant panini. Tasty. Lots of cheese (I think it was mozzarella) and well-prepared eggplant. Thin, crunchy on the outside and a soft and never stringy interior. Good. Not so good was the turkey wrap. I guess I didn't look closely enough before I purchased it, but for some reason there was this 2 inch layer of sun-dried tomato cream cheese wedged between the turkey and the wrap. I just cannot handle cream cheese like that. It makes me feel sick. I think that there was an entire container of cream cheese on this wrap. Yuck.
Next time: panini or salad. And an earl grey tea.
I like the food here so they will get 3 stars, but let me explain my experience so far:
First time I came in, I ordered a Tuscan wrap. Delicious and there were no problems.
The next time I ordered a Santa Fe wrap which is supposed to be chicken or turkey , lettuce, tomatoes, avocado, and ranch. I ordered the chicken and got turkey. No big deal. Third time I ordered, I again got the Santa Fe wrap and made sure to tell them that I wanted chicken. I got a chicken wrap with lettuce and tomato, but no avocado or ranch. I went in one more time and yet again ordered the Santa Fe wrap, they're out of wraps (there is a grocery store across the street and two blocks down). But that wasn't a deal breaker for me so I got it on bread. However, this time I got nothing that even resembled what their menu says — I got fried chicken (menu says grilled) with bacon, some other kind of meat, and some weird dressing. No lettuce, no tomatoes, no avocado, no ranch.
Honestly, the food is good so I will probably keep going back, but the people working there seem like they haven't been trained at all. One time I called in an order and that was a horrible experience that I will never repeat.
Train your employees! This, to me, is on the manager/owner. Get your shit together. I have ordered the same sandwich three times and I have yet to get the sandwich that is listed on the menu.
I am sincerely baffled by the number of negative reviews for this place! I'm not a local, but as I have family in the area, I always make at least one trip to Bake Ridge each time I visit. As a result, I have patronized countless times over the years (before and after the change in ownership), and still can't think of anything bad to say about it.
My review is strictly for the bagels. I don't go to a bagel shop for roast beef or a salad bar, and these aspects are not covered in my review. I also do not expect stellar service from a places which do not offer table service. The staff is not working for tips and has no incentive to go out of their way for you.
With the above caveats in mind, Bake Ridge probably serves the best bagels I have had, anywhere. Bagels are tough and crispy on the outside, but soft and chewy on the inside. This is exactly what bagels should always be, yet rarely are. I have found good quality bagels in a variety of other regions, but none have been quite as good as the ones at Bake Ridge. They also offer more varieties of bagels and cream cheese than I can name. My personal favorites are the Everything and Pumpernickel bagels with Scallion Cream Cheese. Just thinking about it makes me hungry.
Regarding the service, I have had consistently positive interactions with their staff. They have never once acted rude or abrupt to me and have always been downright pleasant and helpful. I am not a NYC native and I guess it must be pretty obvious to the staff. Almost every time I'm in the shop, the staff member serving me engages me in conversation, asking where I'm visiting from, what brings me to the area, etc.
The staff also went above and beyond for me last year around Christmas time when I called 30 minutes before closing, hoping to order a dozen bagels to take to my girlfriend's parents' house. They didn't have any left, and were ready to close up shop, yet they still offered to bake a fresh batch for me. How nice is that? That's about as good a customer service experience as you can get anywhere, and it's just one of many positive experiences I have had with the staff at Bake Ridge.
That said, I leave prospective customers with the following remark:
I understand NYC is one of the largest cities in the world, with no lack of culinary options. I have no doubt that there are bagel shops which match or surpass the quality of Bake Ridge. However, compared to what passes for a bagel outside of the immediate NYC-metro area, these bagels are heavenly! I can almost guarantee that if Bake Ridge was located anywhere other than the NYC-metro area, they would receive a 4-star or higher rating.
All in all, Bake Ridge is a top notch establishment, both in terms of product and service. I look forward to returning at the end of the month when I visit family for Christmas.
Terranova's (Bake Ridge Bagels) is a lot more than bagels. I like that they have healthier choices all around, such as baked rather than fried potato or pita chips, and better beverages such as Honest Tea and Boylan sodas. They have a big variety of food but I'm only interested in the vegetarian offerings that can be made vegan. Pretty much, that means ordering several veggie side dishes to make a whole meal, or having them stuffed into a wrap. A freshly-made wrap is so much better than a refrigerated pre-made one anyway. Terranova's has several sides such as garlic sauteed green beans, broccoli rabe, and roasted seasonal vegetables. The roasted medley is vegetarian but probably not vegan since it has baked breaded eggplant that probably contains a small amount of egg.
I don't bother asking the counter people about specific ingredients that aren't obviously visible. They really are clueless kids. When I ask whether the prepared veggie wraps have cheese, they pick up each wrap and examine it, doh. They poke into all the wraps with the same plastic-gloved fingers… and handle money at the register wearing those same gloves, eew. Also, expect to find crumbs or granules of sugar on the tables since the staff don't get much around to wiping them down. The general pace of the store is pretty slow.
Wow, this place was good once upon a time and now it's the worst bagel store in Bay Ridge. I love bagels and have tried nearly every place around. My husband and I used to go here all the time and were loyal customers until we started getting hung up on by the staff, rude attitudes, and sandwiches with tin foil in them. Yes, you read that right- tin foil. The people who work here seem to not want to do their jobs and it's really a shame because it was convenient for us to go here. I could actually feel the tension when I walk in this place. You have to check your food every time because they are too lazy to write down the order and get it wrong often. Sometimes they have delivery and sometimes they don't – very inconsistent. I suppose it's whatever they feel like doing that particular day? We now drive across the neighborhood to get better bagels with way better customer service. If you are thinking of going here, do yourself a favor and walk or drive the few extra blocks to Bagel Boy…it is so worth it.
