Bakery
“So small you can probably walk right by and miss it, but it's close by Penn station and the A,C,E trains on 35th close to 8th(right next to Starbucks).”
“I think they sell Ovaltine drink, too, if you prefer that over hot coffee or milk tea.”
“People sleep on it because it's in a tourist area but it's legit when it comes to pineapple buns.”

Super quick service, even with a line. We were served, picked our pastries and paid in under 3 minutes!
The items are not labeled, but don't be afraid to ask for a quick description.
Most hot drinks are less than $1.50! And most pastries are only $1!!!!
The lady we had helping us was very sweet. They're not pushy, they just want to help you quickly.
Very reasonably priced and tasty baked goods. No frills, but this place has my heart!
This is one of the handful of Chinese bakeries that still manages to survive the inevitably high rents by the Penn Area. Perhaps this is due to their extremely small space – couple hundred sq. feet maybe? I don't know…
In terms of the quality of buns and beverages, this bakery has much room for improvement, but their service is praiseworthy and better than many businesses. Strange characters frequent this bakery all day long, but I have witnessed the owner and staffs' professionalism and friendliness, treating all customers alike. Lines get ridiculously long in the morning, with people screaming for croissants (which are my favorite item from here btw – freshly baked every morning) coffee, ham & egg buns, etc. One can easily lose their patience, but time and time again I see the employees smiling, engaging in brief chats and staying collected. On top of that, they are QUICK! Long line or not, I can see myself in and out the door with my order in less than 1-2 minutes. As mentioned, their croissant's probably their best pastry. They can do better with other buns and their coffee, but I still order them for the affordability. I do like that they serve lemon ginseng tea though!
I have worked by Penn for about 5 years and have seen a couple of bakeries come and go. I really hope this one sticks it through and sticks around to satisfy my occasional cravings for cheap Chinese buns and drinks.
Dirt cheap, good quality bakery items. Got two bums (red bean and pepperoni/cheese) and a red bean ice beverage for $5.
Would come again for a very quick snack.
Okay, 35th St Bakery may have an 8th Ave address, but it's actually on the south side of 35th St so just be aware of that.
It's a small place for people to get to-go bread: the standard Chinese bakery fare abounds. Hot dog buns, pineapple bolo buns, pork floss buns and the like. I got a $1 pork floss bun, which wasn't too dry and just moist enough. What a good deal too! This is cheaper than Fay Da. The main downside is that this place doesn't do much in the way of marketing itself or its products, so the place is a little dingy and the buns are not labelled. I guess you should just point and ask if you are in doubt!
This CLASSIC little Chinese bakery is where my heart belongs in carb heaven!

Literally maybe can only fit 5-8 people to line up, this is the only place that manages to keep low prices and good quality! Most breads and pastries are $1 or $1.50 and drinks range from $1 to $2.50. NO SEATING and don't complain about it, this isn't a fancy cafe, just a place to get a grab n' go kind of breakfast spot!
My picks: the best thing on their menu, the croissants!! This Chinese version is dense and fluffy and not dry at all. A fresh batch comes out nearly every hour and sells out by 4pm! Try the milk tea, it's a great alternative to coffee!
I grew up going to bakeries just like these, so the nostalgia is real!! Just like old Chinatown, where you can get a pineapple bun and a spongecake and call it lunch! You don't get $2 lunches around here in midtown anymore, but bakery keeps it real old school despite the sky rocketing rent and crazy prices in the neighborhood.
Despite being small and outdated looking from the outside, Bakery has customers from all walks of life grabbing their breakfast here and the ladies working at the counters are just as nice to everyone and will make small talk with you. After a while, when you are a local your usual order will be recognized and you have joined the VIP Chinese bakery club of being an insider!
FYI: Not to be confused with Fuji Bakery(now closed) which was further down 35th in between 7th and 8th.
I came here this morning because I had an egg custard craving but the woman mentioned after 9:30am. Now I stopped by during my lunch break. Very small storefront but the staff or owners are pretty friendly. Many varieties of old Chinese baked goods favorites such as dried pork breads, cream filled breads, croissants or croissants with ham and cheese, hot dog breads. Also its so cheap…I got an egg custard, croissant with ham and cheese and a pineapple bao for 3.50 deal breaker hehe
This little closet like storefront business in the midst of busy Midtown, and a block away from my hotel at The Renaissance during my business stay… I found to my surprise… walking about! Being Asian I am always skeptical when a Chinese Bakery is located outside the "Chinatown" hood, but all it took was one bite of their Pineapple Crunch Bread, and I was sold! This place is legit!! I wish I had taken a photo of the outside because if you walk too fast, you will no doubt, miss them.
Surprisingly, it looked liked most of their clientele during my visit were Chinese. Get this, retired ones which means… this is an old school Chinese bakery which means… it's pretty darn good!
PS – the name of this business is Lucky 888 Bakery (see my photo receipt). In Chinese, triple 888 is the most luckiest number and represents "Triple Fortune." How serendipity!! :p
Until then, be kind to one another and Cheers! ~ :p
The best pineapple buns (bo lo bao) in the city. This includes bakeries in Chinatown, Flushing, Bensonhurst, and Sunset Park. They're one dollar. People sleep on it because it's in a tourist area but it's legit when it comes to pineapple buns.
