Bamboo Garden

“The round tables are huge, it can fit like 12 ppls, usually need to share the table with strangers if you dont have a party of 10 or more.”

“The char siu baau (steamed pork buns) go quickly, and is one of my favorites…big, slightly sweet/fluffy dough, and bbq pork inside….yummm.”

“If they apply the same diligence and craftsmanship to ordinary table service as they did to my banquet, though, I would not hesitate to give them my full, enthusiastic recommendation.”

  1. The restaurant is split into two sides, the main dining room and a private event area. Though I feel the food is a tad Americanized, it actually tastes pretty good. The shrimp salad was fresh and crisp, peking porkchops were a bit more vinegary than your usual but I love vinegar so I had no problems with that, snowpeas were crunchy and sweet, lobster was meaty and garlic fried, and the longevity noodles and and fried rice were excellent as well. From my experience, brooklyn chinese food isn't all that great but this was good!

  2. Ok Cantonese restaurant in 8th Ave. I've been here for dimsum and for dinners before and I usually leave satisfied. The decor is great! There is a lot of seating available at the numerous round tables and I like how the windows have drapes as well. Plates are not the cleanest but definitely pass my health inspection lol. Service is a little inattentive but they are fairly nice.

Most of the food that we got was alright. The sweet and sour spare ribs and the fried tofu tasted very standard. The garlic chicken was a little on the dry side but the flavor was good. I was not a fan of the steak and broccoli because the sauce was a little on the salty side.

Our dinner ended up being $70 for 4 people, which I would say is typical for dinner at Cantonese restaurants. The food tasted very average but I left feeling very satiated so that's a plus. They also give complimentary watermelon slices and tong sui at the end of your meal! Overall, a good Cantonese restaurant that will leave you satisfied.

  3. I am a regular customer for not the reason you think.  They serve sell the best Peking Duck in Brooklyn which is why I am buying it every 3 weeks to take home.  I have also had dim sum here a few times which is good, but not the best.  They charge $3.50 per item and offer a great variety of things to try.  Get here between Noon & 1pm on the weekend when the most variety is offered.  A bonus tip is that you can park at the supermarket parking lot on 64th St for free as long as you purchase something in the supermarket. You can eat at the restaurant and then stop at the supermarket to buy some produce afterwards.

  4. We came here on a Saturday night for a 100 day baby celebration. It took place in a private room towards the back of the restaurant.

The area is a bit sketchy – really dark with a gas station and some warehouse looking buildings interspersed with some restaurants here and there. I honestly would not drive here alone at night.

Anyways, we were able to find street parking around the corner pretty easily. There are residential brownstones a few blocks in and parking seems to be a nightmare there so I wouldn't even bother trying. And again, the seedy neighborhood feeling with such a long walk would also deter me.

The dinner started at 6, but good didn't come out until 7:30ish. As this was a kids celebration, there were at least 20/25 kids under 5/6 there so it was pretty loud. The food came out in quick succession, which was great, and their portions are massive. We had only 6 adults at our table with pre-schoolers making up the other 5 seats so we had so much leftovers that we had to start packing the food away since there was nowhere to put the new dishes coming out. We had cold shrimp salad, sweet and sour taro ribs, sweet and sour pork, steak, lobster, scallops and calimari, steamed fish, crispy chicken, Peking duck, rice and noodles… And there's probably more that I can't remember. It was an insane amount of food. And the food all tasted great. With the exception of the steak coming out cold, all of our dishes were served piping hot. The waiters were very helpful and patient with us as we requested for things again and again, plus they had to weave in and out of all the kids running around which is no small feat.

The back room fit about 13 tables comfortably including a cake table, a sign in table and a candy bar table, so I would say this space could potentially hold up to 150 adults.

Hubby also decided to buy some roast duck and roast pork to take home.

Wish we had this kind of authentic tasting Cantonese food in our 'hood!

  5. I came here on a Sunday for brunch with some of my relatives. As expected, places like these are usually packed when we arrived around noonish.

The different food they were serving had some real inconsistencies. Some were nice and hot and tasted great while others were mediocre and cold. You really didn't know what your were going to get when you pick something out to eat.

The atmosphere was alright, the servers who pushed the food carts around were a little pushy in serving their food despite us telling them we weren't interested.

Overall, this would't be the first place that comes to mind if I'm looking for a Dim Sum place to eat at, but it would not be a place I'd avoid at all cost.

  6. I had Chinese New Year dinner here last night.  The quality of the food and service has gone down.  Should have known that we were set up for a bad meal as soon as we sat down.

The wine glasses were dirty!  Very visible soap scum and hard water stains!  The lazy Susan was dirty.  It looked like it was wiped down with a dirty rag.  You could see crummy oil particles on the glass.

Service was shit.  There was a young waiter assigned to our section.  He kept looking around at all of the tables but didn't bother to refill teapots or switch out dinner plates during the middle of the meal.  It was an older waiter who noticed and told him to do the work.

Most of the dishes were horrible.  Don't be deceived by my picture.  The glossiness of the dishes are from the excessive oil and corn starch.  There was so much corn starch in each dish that after a while the sauce was gloopy.  Not very appetizing when your plate is full of gloopy sauce.

There was so much msg in the dishes.  I poured tea into my cup continually to try to alleviate my thirst.

They ran out of dessert soup, so we only got oranges at the end.  I guess the table that finished ahead of us got the last of the soup.

The tab came out to a ridiculous amount which I don't even want to talk about.  We would have been happier with fast food.

We would have gone to a different restaurant, but it was difficult getting reservations.  Many of the restaurants were booked more than a week in advance for Chinese New Year weekend.  The only available time slots were after 9pm.

So in conclusion, go elsewhere for dinner.  There are so many better options in Sunset park.

  7. I have only been to sunset park for weekend dim sum experience. However, my boyfriend and i decided to give a try for a dinner menu. We couldn't decide on any place so we googled "best Chinese restaurants in Sunset Park" and Bamboo Garden was one of the few that came through search. We had spicy jelly fish, peking pork chops, and seafood noodles. Jelly fish and peking pork was on the recommended list and seafood noodles was something we added on just to try. Everything was good but not excellent. The place is a bit dingy even for typical Chinese restaurant standard and service was not very good. I hate saying service isn't good at Chinese restaurants because I think it largely has to do with the language barriers but even with my boyfriend who speaks Chinese… The service was not good. Good food but I am not sure I would go back…

  8. Fantastic restaurant to come for dinner. The food is traditional Cantonese style. They have some fantastic dishes there. The dishes are very tasty and fresh ingredients are used. I really like their seafood dishes here. Very authentic and very good food. My recommendations…well too many suggestions. This restaurant has not failed since becoming my family's go to restaurant now.

I have been here for Yum Cha- Dim Sum. They have all the traditional classic dim sum dishes as well. Very good as well during dim sum hours.
