BANY – Best Asian of New York

“Great speciality rolls, sushi and sashimi was always fresh, good dim-sum in the week-ends, fast and reliable delivery.”

“All their specialty rolls are pretty good and they also serve lots of rice and noodles dishes if you feel like having something hot.”

“As someone mentioned before, the Spicy Medley Trip was a bit on the salty side, and was a tad bit sloppy, but that didn't matter to me as it's all going into my mouth.”

  1. BANY is that crummy neighborhood sushi / Asian restaurant. The one you go to for the roll combo at lunch.  Unfortunately it's one of the few here and it's not that great from that perspective.

    The secret here though seems to lie with the non-sushi items, which seem to be decent enough when you're having a craving.

    I think part of the negative experience is when that craving is for sushi.  The sub-par sushi seems to be a somewhat self-induced situation.  It feels like they don't get much business, then hold onto the old rice or slightly past prime fish and then try to sell it to whoever happens to be a customer.  Then the cycle repeats with customers parting ways.

  2. Best Asian of New York?  That might be a stretch.
    But it's not the *worst* Asian of New York, so let's split the difference and call it 'pretty good'.

    On my way back to my Long Island City hotel I was seeking a bite to eat, so I stopped in here.  The dining room was pretty quiet at 6pm on a Sunday, so I had no problem getting a table.

    I wasted no time in ordering a dinner special.  For $17, I got a bowl of miso soup and salad, in addition to rice.  From there, I was given the choice of several different sushi rolls (I went with the spicy tuna), vegetable or pork gyoza (steamed dumplings), and choice of entree.  I considered the lemongrass but eventually settled on the chicken pad thai.

    Unfortunately my phone was dead on battery, so I've no photos of my tasty dinner.  I will say, though, that the portion size was ample and the value for the money was AMAZING.  While most places would give you 2-4 pieces of sushi with your combo, here I got 6.  SIX.  Like woah.  And 6 gyoza to boot, instead of just 1-2.  They definitely did not skimp on giving me a lot of food for my money.  The pad thai, sushi, and trimmings were all good, and everything actually tasted great.

    Where BANY suffered was in their service.  I haven't been ignored this much since the last time I saw my ex-girlfriend.  No one greeted me, and not once did they bother to check on me after my food arrived.  Compounding matters was the fact that they neglected to bring a glass of hot green tea….even after asking for it twice.  Yeah, service was a big thumbs down.

    Bread = 5
    Circuses = 2

    While I wouldn't necessarily recommend this asian fusion spot, I found the quality & quantity of items to be far better than expected, so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. Otherwise, not worth the side trip.

  3. Delicious food. I recommend the Pad Thai with shrimp, crispy duck roll, all the sushi and the Fried banana w/ mango sherbet. It's better to dine in this place then get it delivered. Every-time I've gone here they are never packed, maybe I am just getting lucky but I like it. The waitress never let our water get low and we felt like we were kings when we were being served. I'm giving them only 4 stars because I wasn't happy with their delivery times. I live about 10 blocks from this place and they seem to take almost over an hour everytime, granted I can walk my heavy set butt over there myself but sometimes I want to stay home and be in sweats.

    ::::BATHROOM ALERT:::
    I took a photo of the bathroom so you get a better idea. There are no complaints on my end when it comes to the bathroom. Everything smells correctly and is in its place. I am glad they keep the bathroom well-kept because that means they clean all the fish well.

    Needless to say this is the only place I order any type of thai food from and I am going to keep it that way. Granted the wait time is boarder line I still enjoy the food.

  4. I order from this place a lot cuz it's decent sushi and reasonable price for New York. Their chirashi has lots of sashimi pieces and pretty fresh AND they allow substitutions which is quite rare and I like that.  Delivery is fast and service pretty good.  If u eat in they give u a complimentary glass of wine or beer

  5. My son and girlfriend always come here and last night I was just dying for sushi and happened to be in LIC.  He suggested this spot and I am rather glad he did.  I was a little on the hungry side and it was a bit chilly out, so to start I had the classic hot saki, that went down well!  I ordered a tofu salad with jicama which was delightful, shrimp shumi, a spicy girl roll that had spicy yellowtail, salmon,  spicy tuna topped with avocado and jalapeño. …spice nice, hot!  It was delicious.
     I also ordered a couple rolls to go,  a lobster roll that was amazing (it was one of specials, and it was special), and another spicy combination of assorted rolls.  All were really good.  The venue itself was pleasant and the staff were really friendly. Overall,  it was great and will definately be likely to return with a couple of pals.

  6. I have only had the takeout but quality has went down. Used to be alright, average cheap sushi but now it's almost inedible. It's so oily, why is the whole bottom of the boxes covered in oil after I finish eating??? It's only raw fish, why is there that much oil?? Probably will not order from here again.

  7. Never again. In an area that is overrun with Asian restaurants and options, you'd think you'd have to be at least decent to survive. Not BANY. Their food is terribly bland and seems to get worse each time. Their sushi must be made by someone who never learned. The rice really ruins it. I'd recommend staying away. Not worth it in a long shot. Very many other, much better options around within walking distance.
