I tried Baonanas when they had a cart at a Jersey City food festival a couple of weeks ago and I have to say I'm not completely…. well, "Baonanas" over it. I will say that they are super smart for capitalizing on something most people love – an amazing banana pudding – and making it more interesting.
I liked that they had several interesting and unique flavors to choose from (i.e. lychee rose, chocolate, etc) but after sampling a few, I felt that the original banana pudding flavor (OG Baonanas) was the only way to eat it. It's $4 for a scoop… similar cost to a single scoop of ice cream, just less product overall.
I have nothing really to compare Baonanas to except for the infamous Magnolia Bakery banana pudding that everyone loves ever so dearly. I hate to say it, but the Magnolia Bakery chain still wins this contest for me. It is overly sweet and more sweet than the Magnolia version, in my opinion. There was also too much wafer versus actual pudding/creme… maybe it was just my scoop, but the ratio was off. There also wasn't much banana, and the banana that was there was discolored, like when it's been sitting too long.
I'm on the fence about trying this out again, maybe for the other flavors, but for now I think I'll stick to my banana pudding roots and head to Magnolia Bakery.
The OG baonanas comes highly recommended. Light and airy pudding on top with a mushy nilla bottom layer. Would prefer a greater pudding to wafer ratio but it was all a great mix.
Nutella walnut and oreonanas were a little too sweet. You can still taste the base ingredients which is great, but the flavors end up as novelty to the great pudding rather than complimenting it.
I still enjoyed them all. Will definitely try the other flavors as they do look interesting.
LOVEEEEE Baonanas… Went out to Smorgasburg for the first time this season and saw so many people walking around with little cups of this pudding/ice cream amazing looking thing so decided I must have a taste…
Even if you are not a fan of banana pudding I guarantee you will LOVE this. I tried the french toast flavor and it won over my sweet tooth immediately. They have other flavors like matcha, s'mores, strawberry shortcake and espresso which I CANNOT WAIT to try when I go in the upcoming weeks.
