Averages out around a solid 3 when it comes to lunch options.
Every time I come here, I get lasagna, and I will say, it tastes great! Not a terrible price (about $13) for a decent portion that I can eat for lunch and snack on later. Friends have tried everything from salads to sandwiches to pizzas and likes their meals as well. Clearly, we've kept coming back when we want Italian-inspired food for lunch.
The problem comes in when you count the service. Seriously, the people here can be downright rude. As in, one time, it took 20 minutes for my meal to come out, and when I went to ask about it, I was snapped at to just wait. Now, I get it, things get stressful in a restaurant at lunch time, but snapping at a customer? Not okay. Thankfully, one of my even more strongheaded than me coworkers beat me to demanding a manager, and someone finally checked into what was taking so long.
Overall, the place is nice, but some meals take a long time, and they really shouldn't, so many sure you're vocal if your meal is taking an inordinate amount of time.
Though I worked near this establishment for a few years, never once did I bother going in until lunch today. It's a pretty pricey lunch at around $12 for something like my lasagna, but it tastes better than any of the Italian you could get at a nearby deli. I would classify this restaurant as "Italian".
There were tables a-plenty during lunch time and no line at all – it's not busy at all so don't worry about crowds.
I got a lasagna to stay – at $12, you could most definitely get a better lasagna in West Village or some other yummy Italian restaurant for the same price or a little more. You pay more for the convenience of it being in Midtown, I guess. The pasta was overcooked and a little mushy and the whole thing was pretty greasy and made me feel very unhealthy afterwards. There was not enough marinara sauce, either – only a small spoonful on the top of it. I think there was meat in this, but so little of it I could hardly tell. Not terrible, but not amazing.
While the atmosphere and service were good, the food was just mediocre. I would come here just for convenience sake and probably get an overpriced pizza (it looked good) or a salad instead.
This place is a lot like Noodles and Company. you order your food, they give you a number and then you sit down and wait for them to bring your food to you. I got the pappardelle al brasato and my boyfriend ordered a regular pizza. At first the pappardelle was really tasty, but the more I ate it, the less I liked it. It was very salty. The pizza was nothing special.
I went couple of times as well . Tried pasta and pizza. Honestly it was an amazing pizza the only tiny minus is about pasta portions size … They are not even decent :)) i'm not a person that eats a lot I would never imagine myself saying that there is a place in US that has a small portion. Oh so it's a bit annoying because if you ask for Parmesan they have these tinny recipients just to sprinkle a little on your pasta
I usually pass by this place and one day decided to give it a go. I was able to choose something from the board to my liking that was healthy and meat-free as that's always an issue with me. To my surprise they had a wine selection and decided on a glass of cabernet. I was pleasantly surprised with the taste and texture of my meal as well as the wine. For a restaurant that seems like the start of a chain, the food is tasty, the portion was just right and the price was reasonable too. Next time I'm in the neighborhood i'll try their prepared items to go.
Barilla is an Italian food spot that's a slight step up from your typical midtown lunch spot. They offer pizza/pasta/sandwiches as well as an area where you can sit and eat – unfortunately, this area is usually packed at lunchtime so it can be quite difficult to get a seat.
My main gripe with this place is the poor value that you receive – a lunch here can easily run you around $15, which is slightly elevated compared to other Midtown spots. The portions are not that large, so you'll have to complement your pasta bowl with a side of something else (chips?). The large pizza is the exception to this rule – the amount you get is huge, but it's also double the price of what you might expect at a regular pizzeria.
For the most part, the taste is ok. Nothing to write home about, and certainly nothing to overpay for. The one dish which I did not care for was a non-tomato based pasta dish which most closely resembled a mix of baby food and cat food. I can't remember the name of the dish so if you are feeling lucky, just try a few of the pasta dishes on the menu. I dare you.
The final nail in the coffin is the long line and wait that is typical here. It's not really "fast" food, but then again it is not pretending to be, so I can't really knock them for this.
2 stars. I gave this place a few chances in the past as my coworkers really seem to like it, but it's not for me. pass.
For fast food type Italian I think this place is great. I have eaten here many times with my friends and coworkers when we are looking for Italian dish but do not have much time or do not want to spend a lot of money. I have even eaten some Sunday dinners here when I cannot go home for Sunday sauce on Long Island.
My personal favorite is the Spaghetti E Polpettine which is spaghetti with meatballs. The meatballs are the perfect size and they are pretty tasty for not being homemade. I have also tried the Tortellini Alfredo and that is pretty good as well.
I love the salads from here but the set up is interesting. You order and then you sit. The staff is helpful, but the setup is confusing.
