A nice, huge pub. Typically filled with men grunting at sports on the tv, this bar is great for a group happy hour, casual drinks, or sharing a few apps. You can't go wrong with the thin crust pizza, and the teriyaki wings are yum too.
Come here if your stranded in FiDi, or better yet, just don't come to FiDi for a good meal. I came here with a few friends, one of them who lives in the area. We somehow ended up having two different waiters, both were nice but it was strange. I got a Moscow Mule thinking it would be included in the happy hour special, it was not. Between the three of us we split chicken tacos, pork tacos, and a personal avocado and prosciutto pizza. We were under the impression that the tacos would be a "create your own", as they are titled in the menu as "Taco/Burrito Bar". We were very surprised when the tacos arrived already dressed. The pizza was actually pretty good, but altogether the meal was definitely not worth the (expensive) price.
This is one of the only bars in the area and with the atmosphere, i'm sure its just fine for a drink after work.
My friends and I visited for dinner and drinks at around 8:00 on a weekday. We had two different servers, both whom were very nice, but it was weird that the first one just disappeared. I ordered the merger which i didn't like at all. It was also pretty expensive.
We ordered tacos and their pizza of the day. The tacos were alright but they served them without the rice and beans that they come with. The server said that the rice and beans comes with the burrito, not tacos. On the menu it says it comes with it. Whatever. He brought it out for us and the beans had a strange smoky sweet flavor. The pizza which was topped with chorizo, avocado and cilantro was okay. It was salty and the toppings were small and sparing.
For the amount of money we paid for dinner and drinks, I wish we went somewhere else.
It's a really spacious two floor bar in Financial District with a great drink selection. I'd highly recommend this place for big work gatherings. There are big tvs showing all the major sports channels. In terms of food, I would recommend the mac and cheese, it's a perfect amount of mac to cheese ratio and has toasted bread crumbs on top. YUM
Overall a-ok bar for after work hang-outs.
My rating is really based on the ambiance. The food and drink rating would be 2 stars.
Shrimp nachos were just fine, quick, bar food (not memorable in any way). They were clearly made with pre-packaged ingredients.
I ordered the Bell Ringer – xtra spicy… it still only had a hint o' spice. Grey goose dirty martini was WAY too salty.
BUT the conversations and bonding that my leadership group had was wonderful…
I would go again for 2 reasons:
1) Location: A lot of folks work in that area and it's close to trains and the PATH, so it's great for the 5:30 – 6 pm crowd.
2) I went to the University of Michigan for undergrad and grad school and quickly realized Barleycorn is a "Michigan" bar…
Please note that my potential reasons for returning are NOT based off of the food and/or drinks.
For food, this place was pretty decent. It is definitely not your typical bar fare and presentation when it comes to the full menu. It seems they actually have a cook with some skill compared to other bars with a full menu. We were there for brunch. I got the Corned Beef Hash and partner got the Irish Breakfast. Both were decent portions that tasted great. We also got dessert which was an apple pie variation. Overall, really enjoyed the food. Service though was super slow. Our main server practically forgot us. We had to flag down another server that was basically serving all the tables. Other than that, it's a big place that's kind of like a quiet getaway from the hubbub in the area on the weekend during the day. Overall, a fan of the food but the not the service so much, but it is a great option for Irish fare.
Not into this place at all. When it first opened I was really pumped about how GIANT it was. The space has a really fun feel and is so big and spacious, but the food and drinks themselves leave a lot to be desired.
The happy hour specials are not really specials at all (it's like only $1 off a beer, pretty much). Drinks are on the expensive side, but I guess not for that area ($12), but that's not to say they're a good size. I've gotten the bloody mary a few times and it's tiny. They tend to be out of a lot of the beers, I've noticed, which is pretty frustrating.
Have to be honest, I've never ended up ordering food because every time, I've come for drinks and snacks but there is really nothing on the menu that is small enough to be ordered with drinks other than the fries. I do not consider lobster mac and cheese a side that is "light" enough to be ordered if I'm just sitting down for a drink…regardless of the size, you need to be pretty hungry for that. I would highly recommend they add more fingerfood and sides to their bar menu!
Eh. Barleycorn is a great place to go if you are going to grab drinks, but that's about it. Bar is pretty expansive, it has a downstairs area dedicated to the bathrooms (and there are bathrooms on the main level as well). Tons of seating which is great, because when I was there it was packed. Pricing is in line with what you would expect from a bar in Manhattan and the service was good, bartenders were friendly. Really, the only reason I am knocking them down two stars is because of the food. I've read some of the reviews and a lot of people seemed to really like the food, so maybe I should have ordered something else or they were having an off night. Needless to say, my friends and I had ordered the mac and cheese bites and the nachos. Now I will admit that I am not a nacho person, and these nachos were ok, they didn't blow my mind (perhaps it's because I'm not a nacho person though). The mac and cheese bites which I was looking forward to, were pretty sub-par. I'm not sure why I was expecting something super tasty because it's just bar fare, but they tasted like something that was frozen and reheated and not that good. Definitely was in need of seasoning to say the least. I would go back to Barleycorn, but I don't think I'll be trying the food their again.
