“My only complaint: why the eff doesn't this place take credit cards other than American Express?”
“The general tso's & sesame chicken are also both very good – nice batter coating, a good amount of sauce, fresh & hot white meat chicken.”

I just love all the wonderful eateries all around the New York City metro area. One can find any type of cuisine that can possibly exist and I mean anything. Where can you order a milkshake with your sushi? Or a cheeseburger with your pancakes? Welcome to Baumgart's Cafe- a quirky little diner-esque joint with four locations in North Jersey.
My Mother and I went to Baumgart's Cafe at City Place in Edgewater, NJ for one thing- we wanted sushi. Walking into the restaurant, I was immediately comfortable. The atmosphere is so light and airy, normally uncommon for a sushi joint. Then again, this wasn't your average sushi spot as stated earlier.
We decided to first split the Tuna Tower appetizer. Pepper tuna, seared white and baby tuna were piled on top of asparagus and red onion, then topped with a yuzu wasabi sauce. I think we were fighting over the last piece. It was phenomenal. Again, this came out of the same restaurant where you can order a Corned Beef Rueben sandwich. (However, there is a separate kitchen in the middle of the restaurant where the sushi is made, away from the burgers and grilled cheese sandwiches.)
We both ordered the Two Roll Lunch Specials. Served in a bento box with miso soup and a garden salad with ginger dressing.
My Mother stuck with a tuna theme and enjoyed the Tuna Roll and the Tuna with Avocado Roll. You just can't go wrong with tuna rolls.
I ordered the Shrimp with Avocado Roll and the Salmon Skin Roll. Both were excellent. It was quite a lot of food for a lunch priced at $9.50. An excellent bargain for New York City.
Now while the sushi was very good, there isn't an exhaustive list of a variety of rolls. There is no Eel or Soft Shell Crab Rolls. The sushi menu is limited. But then again, how often do you get to enjoy Thai Curry while your dining companions enjoy a Roast Turkey Sandwich or a Shortstack of Pancakes, all at the same table?
I am looking forward to my next visit to Baumgart's Cafe. 4 1/2 out of 5 sprouts.
Asian-American Diner Fusion…It Works…Go Figure!
Chicken with Pine Nuts…Fantastic. Cold Noodles with Sesame Sauce…Great. Sesame Chicken….Yum. Phoenix Roll…outstanding. Spicy Tuna Roll…good quality tuna and not too much mayo.
We have been coming here for years. I used to live around the corner, and my fiancee grew up near the original in Englewood. Whenever we are unsure of what to do for dinner, this is often our go-to spot.
I can honestly say that I have never had a bad experience here.
True…they don't take most credit cards. I'm not going to ding them a star for that…just bring cash…its not that hard.
Eh.
I 've never gotten any of f the sandwiches and stuff here, just stick to the Asian type food thats been stir-fried. I've never tried the sushi though, and don't really plan to.
The food came out really fast, and my boyfriend commented "They must have a fast microwave." Not entirely sure, since stir-frying stuff doesn't take too long, but they probably have the meats cooked separately and throw them in for some dishes.
For example, I ordered the Singapore Noodles (rice noodles flavored with curry). The noodles and the veggies were curried out but the beef- no curry flavor at all? So make sure to mix your meat in to get some flavor on there. It was okay, a huge portion, but not entirely worth it, I would think.
Boyfriend got the kung pow chicken, which seemed to be mostly chili peppers and some chicken. Pretty standard.
Its pretty cheap for a sit down place, but keep in mind they only take Amex or Cash.
Fresh sushi and variety of Chinese dishes and American standards like burgers and fries. Quick service and solid cocktails. Great spot to grab a meal before or after a movie. Sit outdoors or at the far end of the dining area for the Hudson River NYC view.
I used to order delivery for dinner from here quite often (sushi rolls and meh Chinese food) on nights we didn't want to cook. Then, I finally decided to actually go to the restaurant for once instead of ordering in. What a mistake.
The service here is absolutely AWFUL. I went in and asked if I can sit in one of the booths. There were none available so we were seated in the middle stand alone tables. Once two of the booths cleared up, and BEFORE we ordered food, we asked if we can move to one of the booths. The waiter was horribly rude and said that there may be other people waiting for the booth- I said that's fine and to let me know once he's checked around. We went through the whole dinner without ever being told whether we can take the booth, and there were clearly NO MORE patrons coming in. I was really disappointed and felt very disrespected by the tone of voice and the lack of any professional mannerism. I was completely turned off. Needless to say, we're not going back.
I like this place and have been there a few times. Last night I had their tuna tartare and their jalapeno sashimi, which was OK, a bit fishy for my taste. I tried some of the orange chicken also and that was yummy.
This place is set up like a diner with neon colors all over. The designs, colors, and set up just pop so well that it fits all types of occasions. Dates, family gatherings, hanging out, quick bite to eat, pretty much it's a versatile place.
The food I ordered was this Honey Walnut shrimp and The Kung Pao chicken. The Shrimp is probably the best I have had in years, cooked to perfection. The Kung pao chicken was good , but the best part of that was that was the huge portion sizes.
The Mango mojito was pretty smooth.
Definitely recommend checking it out if you are in town.
This place is ok – like if you like Chinese food at the diner kind of OK.
I started with edamame and my boss got american fare (I think a fish sandwich or salmon). He said his was ok.
I got three sushi rolls were beautiful (but huge) and though I can't remember what was in them, there was a lot going on and somehow none of it was that impressive. I like to eat sashimi and taste the freshness of the fish, and yes, I took a huge gamble by ordering sushi from a place like this. I was curious and yes, I guess curiosity killed the cat because it wasn't that good but wasn't what I hadn't expected.
Overall, the service wasn't exceptional, the area didn't feel clean though I saw no mess….I don't have too much good to say about this place other than just skip it.
Sorry Baumgart's, you are cute but the concept of diner/sushi/american food just doesn't work for me. Everything is sort of average of below..getting lost in the mix.
Skip.
