  1. I gave it a 2 for atmosphere but the food was gross and the place smelled…

  2. Yelpers, if you think a business doesn't take your review seriously then you are sadly mistaken.  The management of Beanas reached out to us after we wrote our last review, apologized and asked us to give them another try.  That opportunity presented itself in the way of take out. I feel this update is fair and earned because obviously they could not have possibly known who we were or if/when we'd come back.

The husband called in an order of two entrees for dinner.  When we went to pick up we realized that Beanas must have taken my review seriously because things have changed. When I first walked inside I noticed immediately how much cleaner everything was compared to the last time we were there.  Sure, the decor was the same and the fun games were on the tables but they looked better maintained (wiped down and dusted!).  Even the glasses on the tables sparkled like a Cascade commercial.  We were greeted right away and came home with the food.  First out of the bag, nachos and salsa, real salsa we might add not that Ragu stuff from last time. The salsa no longer tasted like tomato sauce! The chips were good too, a big improvement.

The food was much better then last time too.  Less greasy and heavy. Taquitos Dinner $14.95 perfectly done.  Homemade Empanada Entree $13.95, we had a veggie, buffalo chicken, plain chicken empanada.  All were very good.  All in all we were impressed with the improvement of Beanas.

We are happy they made the improvements we suggested earlier, and would be happy to recommend and return to Beanas in the future.

  3. After seeing the poor average Yelp rating, I was a little hesitant to try this place. However, I was at a loss for vegetarian options in the area and kind of wanted Mexican food so… #yolo.

I'm glad my friend and I decided to try this place for a Saturday lunch! The vibe is extremely relaxed, and the decor is eclectic and kitschy. When we walked in, we were the only people, and the hostess/waitress was sitting at a table. I like that Beana's is BYOB, and I wish that we had brought some drinks but alas.

My friend ordered the veggie tostada, and I got the veggie tacos. These come with your choice of beans and rice. Chips and salsa are complimentary too. While we waited for our food to arrive, we played "war" with the deck of cards beside our table – that was a fun way to pass the time.

The theme of our meal was "underseasoned." Everything was fresh and clearly homemade, but the food – from the chips to the filling in the tacos – was bland. Thank goodness for hot sauce, which helped a lot. The veggie mix in the tacos was strange – zucchini, carrots, etc. – but I got past that. The best part is that you'll get a lot of food for your money.

Throughout, our waitress was attentive and accomodating. I would come back with drinks, mostly for the atmosphere, which is fun and funky.

  4. The only thing I had when I came here was pumpkin pie on a tortilla; I gotta watch my girlish figah ya know.

    It was…eccentric.

I think my favorite part about this place is the fact that it is filled with so much character. So much. There are games for you on the tables to play that'll make you hate yourself. Pictures on every inch of the walls and tons of other Spanish items are strewn about left, right, up and down.

The complimentary chips were bangin' and the salsa had to be homemade. I would come back just for the chips probably.

My friend got this massive burrito with black beans and rice. He really liked his meal, but wished the burrito had a bit more flavor.

Which is why I must give you a cuatro.

    I mean tres.

  5. I love mexican food, ive ate here three times and none of the times were I impressed.  Food is below average in flavor. The servers are the same.  Very forgettable experience here.

  6. I've been to this establishment a few times (5-6) over the last two years.  The food, service and the environment has always been very good.  It's not your typical "Mexican" place.  The chiefs takes calculated risks on dishes but i have never been disappointed.  If your looking for a laid back enviornment, good food, at  fair price try Beana's.

  7. It has been around for decades, and is often crowded, which shows it has a large following. Very good for kids.

BYO and inexpensive, with a nice staff.

Decorations are large numbers of Mexican knick knacks, but food is not interesting

  8. I really, really wanted to say Beana's is amazing. I just moved to Rahway and I'm in this OH IM SO EXCITED TO TRY ALL THESE LOCAL BUSINESSES mode. Things were pretty good after visiting Nancy's Town House so I had high hopes for Beana's.

Pulling into their parking lot, I noticed that they were voted #3 best Mexican restaurant. This was promising! Yay good food ahead!

Not so. For the most part.

First, I disagree with a lot of the posters about the salsa. I liked it quite a bit. It had a good flavor and a nice kick. The tortillas set out on the table were nice and crisp.

Where Beana's fell short was in two chicken dishes: Chicken Enchilada and Chicken Soft Taco. The flavors were bland and there wasn't much going on. The Beef Taco, on the other hand, was seasoned nicely, but still could've used more salt.

Beans and rice are pretty standard and they don't take much to make taste fine so nothing to say there.

The one dish that was excellent above others was their Flan dessert. It has a smooth consistency and isn't as "eggy" as other flans I've had before.

I may be back to Beana's to support a local business and to try more of their menu, but as far as a first impression goes…I wasn't that impressed.
