More like 2.5 stars. I've driven by this place countless times & thought it was finally time to stop in for one of Bear's "famous" chili dogs. My response to their famous claim is a lackluster yawn.
The dog was a dirty water dog that was just a Sabrett. The chili had no pop to it and the bun was lackluster. I'll just kick driving by again in the future.
How much do I love hot dogs let me count the ways. There's something wonderfully American about beef stuffed into intestines. Bear's is definitely on my local quick dog stop when in Sayreville.
A little enclosed hot dog stand sits just out side the industrial center on rt. 615 all year round. Sabrett non jumbo with chilli raw onion & mustard for less than $2. No exotic toppings or selection of hot sauces to spruce the dog up. Just your basic kraut, cooked onion & chilli.
In addition to a table there's a cool bear statue for the kids to sit on until Mr. Bear chases those meddling kids away lol. Worthy of a quick cheap bite.
I had the pleasure to try the chili dogs at Bear's yesterday. The hot dog is Sabrett natural casing all beef dog. The dog was hot, and had a great pop. The chili was a tomatoee chili with just a touch of heat in it that complimented the hot dog perfectly. This place has been around for 43 years, and I hope it can be around for another 43. Simplicity at its best.
