Like most people here, I came for Restaurant Week with some friends and heard mixed reviews but the food they offered for the price-fixe looked pretty fantastic. It's located (and somewhat hidden) by the Plaza so keep an eye out when you're in the area. It's easy to miss.
I was happy to see the free coat check and since we made OpenTable Reservations, we were seated right away. The tables are in my opinion, way too close together. The waiter had to pull the table out and with some complex maneuvering, several minutes later… everyone was seated. I could see this becoming a problem if people need to step out for a minute, then you have to interrupt the entire dinner. But oh well, we worked with it.
We noticed the waiter was a bit pushy/sarcastic at times which was a bit off putting since we didn't know what to order and I felt a tad bit rushed. However, I ended up picking the following:
-Veal Meatballs: I hardly ever eat veal, but these were fantastic. The appetizer was just the right portion and that creamy polenta was a beautiful touch.
-Grilled Chicken: The crust was extra crispy and the meat tender, but there wasn't all that much flavor going on in the dish. It was good, but nothing that left an impression on my pallet.
-Chocolate Fondant: Good. Definitely an option for chocolate-lovers. It was ultra-rich and creamy. However, I didn't quite get the "fondant" part since there was none.
Beautique emits a classy, sexy vibe…. the inside is beautiful. Dinner was good, however I was a little disappointed in the end with the seating arrangements, waiter and parts of my meal.
This is an interesting place. It's an upper scale restaurant, however hidden behind the restaurant is a night club.
The restaurant food is slightly above average and same can be said about the service.
You won't notice the club and won't know how to get to it unless you ask. You actually have to walk through the kitchen to get to the club.
It's a fun place to spend both the early evening and late night.
I like that they had free coat check & the bathrooms and staff were pretty nice. You do have to travel through a little labyrinth to get to events (held downstairs). The space downstairs was nice but tiny. Not sure how in the world they will be doing fashion shows here (since I tend to go to or participate in a lot of those) but seems like a decent venue for a birthday party. Their Brazillian night got PACKED on a Thursday night but there was dancing & overall merriment. No complaints here & it does have an air of class to it.
Made a 6:30pm reservation on a Wednesday night for 4 to celebrate my friends birthday. I arrived early (that's a miracle in itself!) and sat at the bar to wait for the rest of my crew. There is happy hour from 6-7pm so I took advantage to enjoy $10 cocktails.
Cocktails: The Honeycomb with vodka instead of cognac, honey syrup and lemon. Very refreshing and perfect for summer. I later switched to the Riviera Mule with fig vodka, creme de casis ginger beer and lime: best mule I've ever had!
At 6:32 when my other guests hadn't arrived, the maitre d (a handsome young man with a cute man bun) came to ask me if my friends were going to be here soon as they had a lot of 8pm reservations….umm ok, sorry! I checked in with my friends and let him know they would be 15 minutes late. At the same time I checked open table and saw there were plenty of reservations available for a party of 4 for the next 2 hours…
When my friends arrived we were ushered into a gorgeous back room which originally I thought was pretty VIP'ish but later I realized that when the live singer started, all the action was in the lively main room and our "VIP room" now felt more like a "let's hide them in the back". Luckily the food was great:
Appetizers:
-Veal Meatballs with tomato sauce and garlic country bread
-Lobster Mac n Cheese
Both were amazing with perfect flavors! The bread with the meatballs was perfect! Don't bother eating the bread they bring to the table if you get this dish!
Dinner:
-Halibut with black rice, sautéed zucchini, miso & red chili sauce (two of us had this). This was perfect! The flavors were right and the black rice was just enough spicy to give it a nice kick.
-Salmon with curry, coconut milk, couscous, green papaya salad and spinach mint pesto. B/F really liked this and said the salmon was cooked exactly how he likes it (with a little crunch)
-Hangar steak with a side of rosemary french fries. Steak was rather on the small size but the fries made up for that!
Dessert:
-Molten dark chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream and caramelized popcorn.
The waiter brought out a sparkler with this dessert for our bday girl. The dessert was chocolaty goodness and the popcorn on top was quite a treat.
-Macha tea panna cotta with white chocolate ice cream. If you like matcha or green tea GET THIS DESSERT! it was light and airy and the white chocolate ice cream was a great complement.
We asked about the lounge/club in the back but we were told it wasn't open until 10:30pm so we decided to call it a night. The restaurant was quite full, very different from the empty room I saw when I first arrived. The live music was a treat and it felt like I was at a Frank Sinatra concert. The restaurant is upscale and beautifully decorated. I saw a lot of beautiful girls start to come in as the night went on.
Enjoyed a night of dancing here!
At first it seems a bit too like any other club of its kind but I found it to be pretty laid back with more smiling faces than I usually expect for NYC!
The dance floor is somewhat hidden, which I think is cool. There was drumming and Brazilian dance going on! So random and fun!
Of course everyone inside looked like models or wanna be models. There were a few unique ones, myself included. My clothes were way too casual ( birkinstocks ) it had been a long summer day of hoping around the city. Yet, there was no pretentious issue with it. I like to think I can pull off the glam~hippy look but they might have just been very forgiving!
😉 Thanks! XOXO
To be honest I only came here because Amex had a $15 offer. I had not heard of this place prior to that and would never have come otherwise. +1000 points on OpenTable also helped
The ambience was eerily quiet on a Saturday at 6:30. My drink -The Gabrielle which was served in a teacup- was really great. Starter of octopus was nicely cooked but seasoning was too heavy handed. Veal shank was tender but on the dry side and called for more "citrus" flavor. Dessert menu looked boring and lemon tart was weaker than what I could buy at Fairway. But overall food still turned out way better than I expected and I actually might come back if my rich chinese friends ever visit town again.
Nice ambience. I went on Tuesday night and they had a live Brazilian music. Music was nice but it was too loud for such a small space so hard to carry on a conversation.
Food was decent nothing mind blowing or I would particularly come here to eat again. I ordered the meatballs (disappointed it wasn't served on a bed of mashed potatoes like in the Yelp pics) and the risotto which was alright.
I actually enjoyed the brussel sprouts ordered as a side.
Overall it's a pricey place for a meal that i don't think fits the bill.
Bar area looked good. So maybe a nice place to go for drinks but I would skip the meal
I love pretension. But if you are going to be in a prime location in New York City, and liken yourself to one of the best restaurants in the city, I expect delivery. From my experience, Beautique was lackluster. The service was slow. I ordered my drink half a dozen times and it never came. The waiter ended up telling me the drink I had ordered was not available, even though I saw two full bottles sitting at the bar.
The starter was hastily put together and the consistency in the way everything was plated was very spotty if anything. I thought my veal meatballs had been through an earthquake before it got to my table.
For a main, I had the branzino which was surprisingly soggy. There was no crispiness on the skin which made the entire entree taste rubbery and the lack of seasoning on the summer vegetables definitely did not help in the flavour department.
Overall, Beautique talks the talk, but it definitely does not come even close to walking. Luckily the company was great so the atmosphere made up for the lack of service.
