Oh Bendix Diner, I've lost count how many visits have been made by myself and my miscreant crew enroute to and from Greatful Dead shows. Or was that all a flashback?!
Good hash browns, ok coffee otherwise you suck .. when I order an omelette with cheese the cheese should be melted not groty
I was here on a quiet Sunday night a few years back, but I think it's about time I gave my applause to a very nice diner, and one particularly extraordinary gentleman.
The Bendix is classic New Jersey Diner Americana. Neon exterior, basic yet comfortable interior, and a predictable yet well-executed menu. Seeing as my visit was a few years ago, I couldn't even begin to remember what I ordered. But I'm certain there was nary a complaint.
And that's because of the extraordinary gentleman, our waiter. We found him a bit odd at first when he didn't write down our orders, and never looked at anyone in the eye… Slowly the clues started to build, and we were able to ascertain that he was in fact, unbelievably-but-truly, completely blind.
I have encountered few human beings with such courage in my lifetime. To witness this man memorizing our orders with no mistakes, navigating the restaurant with grace, and even serving our meals to us was an incredible thing to behold, worthy of immense respect and praise. Never before had a man in the food service industry so deserved the tip we gave him.
I don't know if he still works there, but I shan't soon forget him. If your job is hard, unrewarding, or doesn't pay enough, just think about the blind waiter at the Bendix diner, and you will know the meaning of dedication.
