Benihana

“In my experience, the food is more often-than-not consistently great even when the chefs' tricks get a bit repetitive and lose spark.”

“You know you'll get great food, you know you'll have entertainment, you know you will walk out feeling like you had a great time.”

“I enjoyed spicy tuna as an appetizer and "Deluxe Treat" ($41) which came with Filet Mignon and lobster tail, as my entree.”

  1. – I LOVE Benihana.  I mean, that's really it.  Lol. Some people like throwing the word "overrated" around, but NOPE!  Not me!  I'll try everything on their menu!  I feel like it's the grill + chef + garlic butter that makes it happen.  I feel like you could put tree bark on that grill, have them whip it up and I would still be sitting here writing this same review.  BOOM.  Great atmosphere, strong/tasty drinks and just an awesome place to eat.  Their prices aren't inflated in freaking NYC either!  That makes me happy.

  2. I grew up going to benihana in short hills and it was always an okay and fun experience, but I would say this benihana is just terrible. Got several drinks at the bar which none really tasted like alcohol… asked the bartender to add more vodka in my drink, you know just a splash, he tastes it w/ a straw and tells me he can "taste" the alcohol. Okay thanks man. Meanwhile he is dumping out pitchers of whatever drinks he makes out when there is extra in the blender. The chef here is prob new or hate his life. Not very entertaining performance… not that I was really looking forward to it since I've been here many times but there were other ppl at the table who has not been to benihana before. Same situation happened to the strangers at my table about their drinks and bartender just did one of those it's supposed to taste like this crap.
    tl;dr this place sucks

  3. Sadly, it seems as if the magic has left good ol' Benihana. The food is still solid (filet hibachi meal w/ fried rice) and the chefs have knife skills paired with poor jokes, but it doesn't feel fun anymore. To be fair, it was a packed Friday night during my visit, but when you're eating a big meal with 'entertainment', it's nice not to feel rushed. Plus, the chef 'interactions' with guests have ceased entirely. No more shrimp tosses. No more sake squirts. They even took the scorpion (or volcano) bowl off of the menu. Nothing fun and personal for the table; just a few knife tricks and your food being served. Waitresses were OK with bringing out items, but felt cold. Overall, a yummy, but disappointing experience. Probably won't be back.

Protip: best to make reservations. Place gets PACKED and the waiting area is tiny

  4. I haven't been to Benihana in awhile, but it's a fun experience. The food is good and you get entertainment as well. The hibachi scallops were great, but has to be eaten right away or they dry out. The filet mignon was delicious. Always upgrade to the fried rice. However… they do charge $4 for the upgrade, which is what a side of fried rice costs anyway, so they really shouldn't call it an upgrade. That's just buying a side of fried rice and now you don't even get the steamed rice that originally comes with your meal. An upgrade should be subbing the steamed rice with fried rice and it costing a little more than the original price of the meal, BUT less than what a side of fried rice would cost. Overall, a great experience. Something fun and a bit different.

  5. Solid and surprisingly reasonable midtown lunch option if you're looking to mix it up and have some fun!  Came here for a work lunch for 4 people and the total was only $74!!  Granted we didn't drink, but still, I thought that was a steal!  The lunch combos range from $11-18 per person and the servings are huge.  The chefs that cook in front of you are extremely amusing  and talented.

  6. less greasy and it felt slightly classier than other hibachi places I've been to but my stomach wasn't feeling super great after those scallops. Otherwise, expect the usual menu selection and service.

  7. Normally I am not a huge fan of hibachi..but I came here 2 years ago for my birthday with 1 of my friends. I had the birthday coupon… I received one around my birthday time for the past years and never used them so I figured now would be the perfect time to try the food here despite the bad reviews I saw.
Came here on a weekday like 5ish with no reservation and I think I only had to wait like 10 minutes to be seated. It wasn't that crowded at that hour which is good.
I wanted my own table, but since it's hibachi, you're bound to share the table with other people if you don't come with a large group.

I ordered the shrimp diablo and was pleasantly surprised. I thought the seasoning and flavor of the food was on point. The noodles were really tasty and the seafood as well. They also gave me a free ice cream at the end to accompany my meal.

I like trying new restaurants so it was good I came here at least once. I am not sure what it is like now… but would I come back? I don't think so. Although I had a pleasant dinner, I am still not that into hibachi food to come for a second time.

  8. I love this place. The portions are good and I loved the chef's funny stories and interactions. Decent prices for the service and high quality. Highly recommend it.
