Ben’s Kosher Delicatessen Restaurant & Caterers

“The matzoh ball soup is to die for, tender matoah balls in flavorful savory broth with or without noodles.”

“Right up there with Carnegie Deli and Katz's. But not as crowded as those places, pretty big inside.”

“Place is more cozier than Katz's Delicatessen downtown and the counter guy was very nice and patient (and cute!).”

  1. Great service, simple tasty deli food and very large portions. Love the complimentary pickles and cole slaw and my bowl of matzo ball soup was huge! Menu has something for everyone.

This was my first time eating at a true kosher deli so it took me a minute to realize there was no cheese options to add to sandwiches burgers etc, doh!

  2. I've been here before but this time had a pastrami sandwich. Granted I was hungry but it was fantastic! The rye bread was soooo fresh and delicious! The pastrami was lean and the waiter James friendly and efficient.

  3. When my friend Ethan B. visited LA, I took him to my favorite Korean barbecue joint, one I've been going to with family and friends for well over a decade. I was in New York a few weeks ago, and Ethan reciprocated by taking me to his family's deli of choice. I guess Ben's is the New York deli favored by his grandmother.

We met up for a Wednesday lunch, and the place was pleasantly busy and alive without feeling hectic. I got immediate good vibes when I walked in–it just felt comfortable and dense with atmosphere. We got a table at the back of the giant dining area, and we took our time catching up. Service was on the inattentive side, but I could tell our waitress was just slammed, and the pace wasn't problematic.

We shared a matzoh ball soup and corned beef and pastrami sandwiches, nuts and bolts Jewish deli food. The soup was great, nice and salty with a fluffy floating matzoh ball and some soft noodles. The main event, though, was the heavy double dose of sandwiches, which we ate with cole slaw and two types of pickles. The portion size wasn't ridiculous, but the meal was still quite substantial. The corned beef wasn't the best, a bit dense and on the bland side, but I enjoyed the pastrami. It was tender and nicely crusted, with a lot of flavor. The rye bread was good, and I really liked the pickles and cole slaw, great sides/condiments, along with a hit of deli mustard.

In retrospect, I greatly regret visiting New York in the first days of Pokémon Go and leaving without picking up the local spawns. I'm glad, though, that I at least squeezed in a satisfying trip to a Jewish deli. I liked Ben's and would recommend it if you're looking for the full deli experience without the hassle of Katz's or Carnegie.

  4. Extensive watching of '80s & 90s comedy has taught me that (a) pastrami is the most sensual of the salted, cured meats, but (b) only one house of pastrami is sensual enough to induce one to very convincingly fake orgasm (And if you've ever been to Katz's, you know that one doesn't really have to fake it.)  But Ben's is a fine midtown purveyor of that Jewish deli staple, the Pastrami sandwich.

I've eaten in and done takeout from here multiple times – delivery/service is top notch, and painfully mediocre knishes aside, everything I've had from here ranges from solid to excellent.  Excellent matzo ball soup.  Decent omelette, solid hot dog,  The potato pancake is ok, but a bit too greasy.  Free pickles & cole slaw come with pretty much everything   And just yesterday, this fine Jewish deli rescued me from a fate worse than death – a corned beef-less St. Patrick's Day!  Their corned beef platter was huge – I got 2+ meals out of the platter, which came with a ton of corned beef (well, a half-pound, but it seemed like a ton), surprisingly good boiled cabbage and carrots and an unsurprisingly blank boiled potato – almost as good as we Irish can do, but with a free matzo ball soup to boot!  Nice option to have when you work in the culinary wasteland that is the Times Square area.

  5. LOVE this place. Everything is perfect–they have free soda refills, the pickles and cole slaw are fresh and delicious and their sandwiches are huge and incredibly good. Their fries are also ginormous and potatoey and amazing. Perfection all around.

  6. Popped my matzo ball soup cherry here! A fan favorite of the office, the portions are large and the prices reasonable. Stop by for all things kosher!

  7. Ben's isn't as prime as Katz's, and is the same price. But when you're in midtown and you're craving pastrami, it'll do. It's my family's default to eat at when we're in the hood, and don't want pizza. It's a low-key Jewish deli with waiters who'll remember you and what you get there each time you go, which gives you that warm fuzzy feeling. They let me charge my phone at the hostess stand, too, which is always a plus. They bring you complimentary coleslaw once you're seated. I've had their schwarma – good stuff. Their burgers and fries are a great deal. Love those thick juicy fries! I wouldn't call eating at Ben's a must-do if you're visiting, but if you're in around and want some Jew food at a homey place, it's a solid pick.

  8. We really like Ben's Deli. It's not flashy and it's not one of the big named delis — but that's great. There's never a huge line, there's plenty of seating, and the food is solid.

When I go I get the half sandwich and soup. Matzo Ball Soup is great.

You also get cole slaw and pickles. They're great with kids. The waiters are exceptionally nice and friendly.

I love Ben's when I'm looking for my Jewish deli fix.
