  1. The good – Berry Fresh is three blocks away from my apartment. It closes at 9pm everyday, which gives me plenty of time to go after work. It's never crowded. It's clean. There's a bathroom in the back.

The bad – the prices are not impressive compared to Trader Joe's (which seriously spoiled me during my college years). Refunds and exchanges can only be done within 24 hours. And most importantly, I resent how it's divided into two sections, like two grocery stores joined into one, so that everything you want is in two different locations so it's hard to compare brands, ingredients, and prices.

  2. Great neighborhood grocery store with good selection of fruit & vegetable at a good prices.
    Workers & cashier are friendly.

Great deal on corn on the cob this week; /$1 !

Note: Parking is tight so try parking on the street.

  3. Superior selection and pleasing prices.

My reviews usually stick to restarants, however, living a block from the train, I consistently make the special trip to this grocer.
All they're missing is butcher but they do have a fish monger.
One time I witnessed an odd incident occur with a new cashier but I haven't seen him since :/
Davika* is such a friendly and helpful cashier that I'll wait the extra customer in line to say hello.

If BFF had more of  an organic, woody, natural feel, along with a space for cooking examples… that alone would entice me plant my roots permenently.

I really enjoy this grocery store and you can find me here regulary on sunday mornings/afternoons.

  4. I've been shopping here a number of years.  It's a bit of a hike from my place, and I usually don't have a car, but it has usually been worth the trip.

One, and this has been mentioned in other reviews, the prices here are generally cheaper than other places in Astoria, especially with the produce.

Two, the deli/cheese area is great.  There is a great selection.  The people working in the deli section are friendly and helpful.  Across from the deli is a pretty decent olive bar.

Since the expansion, the supermarket is like two stores.  The deli and produce sections are in the new area, with wider aisles.  As you move into the older section, the aisles become much smaller.

While I generally like the produce section, I would recommend that you shop around.  Maybe because they aren't in season, I haven't liked the peppers that I've seen during my recent visits.  However, during the summer, the fruits have generally been wonderful, and the prices of some higher priced fruits (blueberries and strawberries mostly) are better than most places in Astoria.

The meat section is probably the weakest part of the store.  It isn't bad though.  In contrast, the fish section is pretty good, in selection, quality (I think it just got off the boat!) and price.

The parking lot is a bit cramped.  If you go during a busy time, you may have to wait for others to get out.  However, when I have driven there, I usually found parking within 5 minutes of my arrival.

If this place were more convenient (not the store's fault, just geography), I'd definitely go there more often!!!

  5. Funny. With a name like Berry FRESH FARMS, one might think; FRESH produce, cleanliness perhaps too? Nope and nope. A bud of mine kept gushing about the FRESH oysters they supposedly had here and that's what got us through the door, at first.

After sifting through cramped aisles and getting rammed by two shopping carts, with both people never even saying "ooops, sorry, my bad, etc." (probably non-english speakers) we rung up our stuff and headed home. The oysters sucked, the produce wasn't fresh and between the tiny aisles (ala Trade Fair on 30th Ave), the weird stink inside the store, shitty selection and rude people shopping in their – needless to say, I won't be back again. The only reason this place gets 2 stars is for the meat selection and deli area, at least they seemed clean and had their shit together…

  6. I'm such a big fan of Berry Fresh – they have such a huge selection, especially with the expansion a few years ago.

I can't leave without buying a jar of salmon roe – it's a guilty pleasure of mine to eat it straight out of the jar with a wooden spoon! MMMMMM! Or over sushi rice. It's not the same quality as Ikura that you can find at high end Japanese markets, but these jars fill my need for a giant serving of roe. They also have several different varieties of smoked salmon!

I also really like their fresh seafood section – the guys there tend to look pretty bored, but are pretty helpful whenever I needed anything.

One note: you really need to keep an eye on the expiration dates on packaged goods here.

  7. Went here for the first time today and wish I'd gone sooner! Prices, for the most part, are much better than other supermarkets in the area (Best Yet, Trade Fair, Key Foods) and the selection is really great and diverse. So much cheese! Butter that isn't exorbitantly priced!

Sure, some of the produce is a bit wrinkly and wilted but most of it is perfectly fine. Berry fresh may be the furthest supermarket from me but I think it's my new fave.

  8. This place is awesome. "Berry Fresh Farm" has some of the BEST produce in Astoria. The greens are always bright green. Iceberg, romaine, watercress, etc., look fresh, clean with no brown spots and most important, very tasty.

Same goes for the fruit, always fresh and bright. Clean skin and firm touch across the board for the fruit selection. Berry Fresh always seems to have a selection of different types of melons, plums, grapes, etc. Prices always seem to be competitive and fair.

Can goods, dry goods and beverages always seem to be well stocked and with variety of items.

Last time I was there a couple of months ago, they were renovating the Meat Department. Maybe they are redoing the entire store. Time for a visit.

I have never bought seafood here, but it always looks fresh with bright colors. Large variety of shrimp. Not a huge selection, but I would certainly purchase seafood here if in the mood.

Overall, this is a great place for produce. It is not my local store for produce, but if I am in the area with the car it is definitely in my radar. I always go wow with how many of their items look so fresh. Fresh seems to be the key word with "Berry Fresh Farm".
