  1. When I went it was just various Vietnamese style dishes, reminds me a bit of Republic in Union Square.

The guy in the truck was helpful and his recommendation, the grilled chicken platter ($9), was pretty tasty.  It came with ample amounts of chicken, nicely marinated, with shredded daikon and carrot pickles and a sweet spicy sauce on the side, all over soy sauce flavored broken rice.  Pretty good though TBH I wouldn't mind a little less meat + carbs and a little more veggies – think raw bean sprouts would go really well here.

Let's face it, it's hard to find decent Vietnamese food in New York!  So I'm perfectly grateful for a Vietnamese food truck.  Hope the other dishes are just as good!

  2. Another food truck! I was actually being attracted by their card which had large Big D's logo on it. Decided to try rice platter, which essentially can judge the quality of all food truck. I got the spicy chicken, not as good as I thought as the chicken looked a little bit dark…probably I was being too picky…sorry Big D!

  3. Great team in the truck at the annual Loving Day event this past weekend. The group is chill, and I love the fusion aspect of their dishes. For example, the bulgogi tacos were delectable, unique, and delicious (3 for $10). I only wish I had had room for the chicken ginger tacos!

  4. The spicy chicken grinder sandwich is huge and satisfying, but for the love of Vishnu, DO NOT bring it into the office unless you want to infuse the place with the smell of freshly pickled vegetables. Because you know Bill from Accounting (who's never left the US) is going to start complaining about the smell and saying it affects his biweekly asthma.

Not that that happened to me. No, sir.

  5. Really this is a 3.5

I had a spicy pork burrito and the dumplings.

The pork burrito was really quite good, a little over loaded with sauce as it was dripping everywhere, but delicious none the less.

The dumplings were not good. They had very thick, starchy outer layer of dough, and were not very well flavored.

  6. I love Big D food truck that I hired him to cater my wedding. They were organized, energetic, and punctual. Despite the rain they drove up 2.5hrs to the wedding and was early.  Everyone at my wedding loved the food.

  7. I use to bartend an event that hired Big D's to cater for them and I cannot believe how delicious their tacos are.  The meat was marinated perfectly and it was at a great price point. I would def recommend them to anyone looking for a tasty quick bite.

*I would advise my fellow yelpers to track them on Facebook. They usually update their status to show where they will be parked a couple days in advance.

  8. okay, so i'll admit it… i love big d's.
    yeahisaidit.

great food truck choice near my midtown office (parked on 52nd between 6th and 7th every wednesday lately). big d's is a nice alternative to street meat from halal guys nearby… swap street meat with white sauce for some of big d's special sauce and massive grinders. yum.

the grinders are huge, and they'll only run you $8. the spicy pork grinder is as close to a banh mi sandwich you'll get in the vicinity. the spicy pork is really nicely flavored, the slaw is yummy, and the large chunks of cucumber add a nice textural component. the meat is good quality for a food truck- none of those yucky fatty bits to spit out.

the downside (and this is pretty important): the bread. the bread isn't toasted on the inside and is super soft… so once it's topped with juicy meat and veggies, it disintegrates into a mushy, unpleasant mess. maybe if it were toasted on the inside, it would hold up better… or it might be time for a new denser, crusty-er bread.

the best: big d's yucca fries with spicy mayo. super delish, super big portion for $3. only bad thing is when they run out 🙁

i'll keep coming back for more- can't wait to try the tacos and the dumplings. hopefully, the truck will be around on a regular basis…

    dear big d's,
    please don't stop coming
    to midtown on wednesdays.

(now get yo' mind outta tha gutter and get some).
