Big Ed's BBQ lives up to its name. Everything is big and nothing little about it. Ed's has a massive amount of seating. Two very large dining rooms with a big bar in the middle serving up XL frosted mugs of beer, with a wide selection on tap. Ed's is an all you can eat Rib joint that was established in 1992 and still independently owned serving up what is New Jersey's standard of bbq. They serve "Baby Back Ribs" which are a small cut and have less meat on the bone and the "Saint Louis" which have more meat on the bone and are trimmed differently. On the St. Louis the meat shrinks and forms handles which are easier to eat with your fingers. My favorites are the combinations such as "Spare and Fried Clams", "Spare and Fried Shrimp", "Spare and Pulled BBQ Pork" and "Spare and Half Chicken". Sides are good such as the "Baked Beans", "Mixed Veggies" and "Stuffed Potato". Just a note don't load up on the free "Garlic Bread." It's good and highly addictive.
My favorite bbq place in NJ! Can't get enough of the all-you-can-eat ribs & their garlic rolls are just incredible. Definitely the best way to kick off the summer for me. Can't wait to come back next time.
What's not to love?!? We came in for lunch as a group of four and all left full and happy. The only problem was that we came in at 2.30pm for "lunch" and were told that lunch ends at 2pm, not the 3.30pm that their website said. Not the worst thing in the world, but completely different pricing. The restaurant has a great ambiance and decor to make you feel just like you were eating BBQ in Texas which makes it an even better experience. We each ordered a different all-you-can-eat rib meal and I was the only one who got on to a re-order as the first plate they bring you is a very large portion, not to mention the garlic bread they start you off with and the side that comes with your food. They carry all three major types of ribs and many different sauces depending on your taste. All in all it's a great place for BBQ but make sure to bring your appetite. As a side, the extra cost to get a re-order to go is definitely worth it.
Service was a bit slow to get seated and have menus. From there it was a better experience.
Menu offers lots of choices and each rib combo offers ayce. They serve enough for a meal bit if u feel piggish then ask for more.
Food is fine. Tried the baby back and St. Louis style ribs along w brisket. Also had the pulled chicken and shrimp. They serve garlic toast as bread. Ours was a burnt batch so half edible and half not.
It's worth a visit if u r in the area.
What can I say about Big Eds Bbq? This place was the go to place back in high school and always the place to go to before a big night out with the crew. All you can eat ribs are excellent. Cooked perfectly and the sides are amazing.
Big selection of beers and the desserts are excellent as well.
Friendly staff, great food, very inexpensive and worth the trip back to Matawan NJ.
Just wish they had a Big Eds up here in Bergen County
Came back in this past weekend and were better prepared to order than the last time. First off, no sangria – enjoyed a big cold mug of Blue Moon. I got the beef brisket platter which was really good and the boyfriend got the all you can eat of St. Louis and Baby Back ribs. We were both much happier this time around with our meals. As usual, simple salad, but those buttery garlic rolls are just sinful.
I had the all you can eat plate with 3 different styles of ribs. I've been here twice now and I never got a chance to rate this place. Now, after my second visit I will give it a go. I was slightly disappoint in the one rack I received. Too much fat on the one rack, I was really embarrassed I didn't want the waiter to think I was a food spoiler since I really couldn't eat one of the racks. So I pretended like I was full instead of ordering the next round..The other two style racks were much better. I know this place has been around for many years, but unfortunately I got the bad rack and I would have to rate my experience based on the overall food and the coleslaw was great. Service was with a smile. So, I appreciated that.
Amazing sauce slightly above average ribs and it seems as though every round has a little less quality then the previous. This seems to be the consensus typically at all you can eat bbq joints. Exist heavily on their sauce and quantity over quality unfortunately I have to say that this stands to be the truth at Big Ed's .
I was not that disappointed at all in fact I rather enjoyed my experience. Falling off the bones I beg to differ I didn't have any pork fall rather light tear would be more appropriate. I sampled in 1 seating of course, not only the baby backs but saint louis and spare ribs. The best is obviously the baby backs definitely stick with them with the honey sauce or Big Ed's very own barbecue sauce which is absolutely outstanding and I have to admit the dry rub had a nice little zing to it as well.
Do not let them fool you by loading up on the massive salad or sides that they provide and stear clear of the never ending tasty but all to filling garlic knots. I guess they have other food but who cares it's a barbecue joint that specializes in ribs and that's why you go there.
On a whole the places is ok for what it is and that's massive quantities of pork shoveled down your throat which every now and then I do crave. They do have a weird happy hour from like 1130 to 5pm on weekdays, I mean I'd love to drink during the day but who the hell can do that with work and I believe the happy hours only a dollar off anyway. Allyson the week night bartender was very courteous and helpful and ridiculously knowledgeable in the wonderful world of pork ribs.
So the ribs are slightly above average the sauce is outrageously good so for that they get a strong 3 and they have several different types of beers on tap a bonus for a guy like me.
