Disappointed, very disappointed.
Most people know about the BGIC because of how famous it is, so I, like most people, had huge expectations, but boy were these not met.
First of all, the line was crazy long. I was melting in the sun probably faster than what I thought was going to be a delicious ice cream would melt in the sun. With such line I thought that Jesus Christ himself was serving the ice cream inside. I wasn't surprised when I didn't see Jesus inside, but I WAS surprised when I tasted that ice cream and then I remembered how much I had just paid for the most basic ice cream of life. I legit think I shed a tear.
This place isn't cheap, but then again this is NYC where breathing costs you an arm and a leg. However, for the price of the ice cream you'd just expect better. The gelato I had in Little Italy was better than my ice cream here.
Anyways, the service was good and the inside was beautiful even though small and crowded and lacking places to seat at, but what they offered just wasn't good. It tasted like McDonald's ice cream, except I think this one melted even faster.
Completely disappointed.
Ice Cream in the Village. The line is often around the corner but we went by after they had opened and snuck in for a cone. They put these plastic things on the cone to save your clothes but I think they backfired and made it harder to eat. I appreciate the effort though. Service was good. Shop is bright and staff seem happy to be there. And they have sprinkles.
Warm summer night. Dinner with friends. Lots of drinks, need dessert. Long line out the door at Big Gay Ice Cream Shop. Decide to wait anyway. Plenty of time to decide.
Vanilla soft serve ice cream, pretzel chunks, sea salt, dipped in chocolate sauce.
Joe does happy dance and all is good in the world.
I get that Big Gay has a lot of hype but when it comes to the product I just don't think it's anything special. In my opinion, it is a glorified Mr. Softee. What I mean by that is the soft serve taste the same but they add things like caramel and other toppings.
Well regarded as one of the best soft serve ice cream spots in Manhattan, these guys serve seemingly every flavor combination imaginable (you made a mistake if you don't try the Salty Pimp though – vanilla ice cream, dulce de leche, and sea salt with chocolate dip). Service is very efficient, but definitely expect a line down the block in the summer months. The space itself has some seating with fun decor and throwback tunes.
Expect to pay $6-8 for a cone if you get anything other than a basic combination (which is definitely more than your average soft serve ice cream). That said, it's hard to be disappointed after grabbing ice cream here, no matter how long the wait.
Late posting…i had read about this place on fb..told my ny friends to please take me here..i love the storefront window pic of unicorn lickin a ice cream cone lol…fun names of ice creams on menu on wall..we got the salty pimp and mermaid..both yummy! Sat outside on benches n enjoyed our ice cream…friendly service n of course awesome ice cream! I will be back!
I had high expectations, especially given the reviews and line around the corner.
The ice cream itself was okay. There are a lot of better ice cream shops.
Not bad, cute for the novelty, but I'd probably go elsewhere next time.
I'm not usually a fan of soft serve ice cream, but I knew as an ice cream lover, I knew I had to try this place. I'm so glad I did! It probably won't take the place of regular ice cream for em but it was such a tasty treat. It's very fun and kitsch inside: super bright and light with lots of colors and a fabulous print of Bea Arthur on the wall. They have really fun treat concoctions like the "salty pimp" and the "Bea Arthur" as well as just regular soft serve. They have some sundaes as well and milk shakes. I got vanilla soft serve with pumpkin butter and maple sauce and crunchy pie crust sprinkled on top. It was delicious! It was very rich and filling and I couldn't even finish it. My husband got a peanut butter and chocolate milkshake. It was good but a little too heavy on the peanut butter. I will definitely go back some day to try the salty pimp!
