I stopped into Birch for the first time on a sweltering summer day to finish up some readings for a class. The interior is tiny, with enough seating for perhaps 10, which turned out to be more than enough spots for all the patrons sipping in. It at first seemed quite warm inside, but I got used to the temperature pretty quickly and gene really thought the room felt pleasant.
I ordered a large cold brew with a splash of milk and settled in on a stool facing the street. The cold brew was exactly as it should be: bold and aromatic. The cold brew that I've sampled tends to taste pretty similar most places, but that's fine because it's usually good.
One minor complaint is that the establishment has no public bathroom. I was directed to the library down the street, which wasn't a problem, but the bathroom there was a little gross.
Unfortunately the management of Birch now believes their cold brew must be sold as if it were alcohol at a bar.
I ordered two large cold brews here last week, one with a little ice and one with very little ice. I don't like how the cold brew tastes once it is watered down by the melting ice. I got a surprise, my $4.00 drinks were about two inches short of full. I asked if they could pleased be filled, and was told NO. Their cold brew was too precious to give away, that there is a "exact" amount of cold brew that goes into a large and not more. just like at a bar, I was told. I mentioned that to my knowledge, they were the only coffee place doing this, I received no response. I explained that my visits would become much less frequent, no response again.
Have not been back. I will keep my money, Birch, you keep your coffee.
I had been here many times before, and never had this happen, so either it is a new policy or all the other baristas were just smarter then this over eager person.
A friend recommended this place after lunch. The coffee was really great and we were served with a coffee and a coffee to go very quickly.
The baristas all were very nice and helpful with all questions I had 🙂
The view out of the window is very nice while drinking a coffee by the way! 🙂
A most endearing spot!
Pros:
+ the most beautiful space. Wonderfully designed.
+ great espresso
+ excellent signage and organization
+ great music
+ not a lot of seating, but it's easy to get a seat because most people order their coffee to-go
+ pastries and doughnuts from Dough
+ tons of merchandise
+ the two men who were working during my visit were remarkably friendly and charming
+ no credit card minimum
+ they carry hemp milk!
Cons:
– no wifi
– espresso not served with sparkling water, which always bums me out 🙁
– no bathroom (unless I didn't see it?)
– currently no vegan food options (didn't bother me but it's always nice to see)
If anything, it's worth a trip just to see that floor. This coffee shop is ready to be 'grammed, so have your camera ready! #nofilter
Huge fan of Birch – if you like chai tea they have the best iced chai with hemp around! I recommend a dirty chai if you need an extra kick (shot of espresso).
My go-to coffee shop by me! This one is a bit small compared to others I've seen, but it's cozy!
I usually get their mocha or latte. The muffins (blueberry or banana chocolate), croissants (both the plain and almond), and the scone (cheddar herb) are great as well!
One of the smoothest cortados anywhere in the city
